Description
Breastfeeding armchair
This invention relates to an ergonomic nursing armchair unit situated in a rocking immersion pod unit allowing for comfortable and private breastfeeding in public. The pod can be opened and closed and when closed it offers privacy for nursing in public places. The entire surface of the pod is used as advertising space allowing for sponsorship opportunities. 700 000 new babies are born in the UK each year according to the NHS Information Centre. According to the NHS Information Centre’s Infant Feeding Survey published in November 2012 the proportion of babies breastfed at birth in the UK rose by 5%, from 76% to 81%.
Breastfeeding is a highly controversial subject with health professionals advising that women keep breastfeeding their infants up to a minimum 6 months but possibly 2 years of age, however breastfeeding in public is sensitive as it includes baring women’s breasts and nipples in public and many mothers feel uncomfortable doing that.
The Nurture Pods allow users to breastfeed in public, the pods are situated in public places such as restaurants, cafes, train stations, sport halls, airports, shopping malls, warehouses, offices, tube stations, libraries, hospitals, GP’s, hotel receptions, parks, swimming pools, community centres, supermarkets, retail units, parking lots, gas stations, including other places. When not used, they function as a simple immersion pod, when used, they can be closed with a mesh cover to offer privacy while breastfeeding babies and toddlers.
Ergonomically the nursing armchair allows for comfortable breastfeeding by offering the following: 1. Elevated backrest unit for neck and spine support and ergonomic posture; 2. Wide and low armrest units; 3. Wide and comfortably cushioned seat unit; 4. Sturdy stabilising unit with two scroll out foot rest units for tall and short women so that both are equally able to create a “flat lap”; 5. Closing cover unit that lets the user immerse in the pod and offers full privacy; 6. Chair rocks calming the baby and offering a more pleasant experience.
The invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows the armchair inside the pod (p), with the elevated backrest unit (a); wide and low armrest units (b); wide and comfortably cushioned seat unit (c); sturdy stabilising unit (d); with two scroll out foot rest units (e&f]; closing cover unit that allows for the immersion (g); rocking function (h).
Figure 2 shows a branded nursing pod from a fictious sponsor.
