Abstract

Pipes. - Long narrow pipes are made from sheet metal by feeding the sheet step by step to a looselymounted vertically-guided core and pressing it round the core by a succession of pressing strokes of swage members one of which at least is trough shaped; the holes for the rivets securing the longitudinal edges of the bent-up sheet may be formed prior to bending. The metal sheet 25 is fed intermittently between the core 8 and lower swage 9, and successive portions thereof are shaped by an upper swage 7 carried by a press beam 6 actuated by an eccentric 5, the feed of the sheet being effected by bands 12 attached by clamps 13 to the rear edge of the sheet and wound on a drum 14 by means of a ratchet wheel 16 and pawl 17 on a lever 18 connected by a rod 19 to a lug 20 on the eccentric 5. Spring- pressed rollers 10 adapted to retreat into the swage 9 serve to lift the work and the vertically. guided core 8 away from the lower swage between the strokes of the press to facilitate the feed of the work. A rail 24 guides the bent end of the sheet between the core and the upper swage 7. The bed 2 supporting the lower swage 9 acts against heavy springs 22 which compensate for the increased space between the swages when the bent sheet enters between the core 8 and upper swage 7. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, wherein the swage 9 is supported on a rigid bed 2, the increased space between the swages when the pipe is half formed is provided by moving a stepped block 30 slidable on the press beam 6. over to the right, and the guide rollers 36 and winding drum 14 for the bands 12 move up and down with the press beam 6.
