Abstract

An edging strip 1, for a door 9, with a double rebate configuration, comprising a first part for mounting on the main outward facing portion of the door 8, and a second part extending over at least a fraction of its upstand portion. The first and second parts of the edging strip include removable side extensions (12, 13, Figure 1) which expose the free ends of the first and second sections when taken away. In this latter configuration the open end of the first portion is flush with the exterior facing portion of the main core of the door, while the exposed free end of the second portion is aligned with the internally facing side of the core. The edging strip may include a resilient seal or gasket 15 which fits into a U-shaped seal-receiving channel 17 and a sealing projection fashioned as a resilient t-barb formation (18, Figure 5).

Description

AN EDGING STRIP FOR A DOOR FRAMEWORK
The present invention relates to an edging strip for a door framework, a door framework with an edging strip and a method of forming a door framework with an edging strip.
To protect and seal a door framework, skin panels are typically applied to the interior and exterior facing surfaces of the framework, and an edging strip is applied to the outward facing peripheral edge surface and the top and bottom edges.
However, known edging strips for, protecting the outward facing peripheral edge surface of a door framework suffer from the drawback that they are adapted for application only to a specific width of door framework and size of door rebate.
It is an object of the invention to provide an edging strip for a door framework,a door with an edging strip and a method of forming a door framework with an edging strip that alleviates the above limitation, and/or provides the public and industry with a useful alternative.
Accordingly, the present invention provides an edging strip for a door framework of the type comprising a main core with an upstand portion for a double rebate configuration with a door frame profile, the main core having an interior and an exterior facing surface, an outward facing peripheral edge surface and top and bottom edges, the edging strip comprising: a first portion for mounting to the outward facing peripheral edge surface; a second portion connected to the first portion operable to extend along at least part of the outer surface of the upstand portion of the door framework; wherein, the first portion and the second portion each comprise a lateral extension portion that is operable to be removed to expose free ends of the first portion and second portion such that when the edging strip is secured to an outward facing peripheral edge surface of a door framework the exposed free end of the first portion is flush with the exterior facing surface of the main core, and the exposed free end of the second portion is flush with the interior facing surface of the main core.
Preferably the first portion is substantially planar, and the second portion has a section that extends substantially perpendicular to the first portion and a section that extends substantially parallel to the first portion, whereby the perpendicular section and parallel section of Me second portion are adapted to overlie the upstand portion of the door framework.
In another embodiment ofthe invention, the edging strip comprises a resilient seal or gasket in a region between the first portion and the second portion for forming a seal between the edging strip and a surface of the door frame profile.
Preferably, the resilient seal or gasket is mounted in a seal receiving channel formed by the first portion and the second portion.
Preferably, the seal receiving channel is dimensioned to fit into a complimentary core channel formed in the main core of the door framework, the seal channel when fitted to the main core arranged to follow the contour of the core channel.
Preferably, the seal receiving channel is a substantially U-shaped formation in the edging strip.
Preferably, the U-shaped channel comprises a first leg, a second leg and a third leg, whereby the first leg extends perpendicular to the plane of the first portion, the second leg extends perpendicuiar to the first leg and forms a base wall of the seal receiving channel, and the third leg extends perpendicular to the second leg and along a part of the upstand portion of the door framework.
Preferably, the edging strip comprises a sealing projection in the first portion.
Preferably, the sealing projection extends from the underside surface of the first portion for engagement in a projection receiver in the door framework.
Preferably, the sealing projection is a resilient t-barb formation; Preferably the sealing channel and the sealing projection are spaced apart such that the exposed free end of the first portion of the edging strip is flush with the exterior facing surface of the main core and the exposed free end of the second portion is flush with the interior facing surface of the main core.
Preferably, the first portion comprises a lock receiving recess for fitting into a complimentary recess of the door framework.
Preferably, the second portion mounts one of: a sealing element or a channel for receiving a further sealing element mounted to a door frame.
In a further aspect of the present invention, there is provided a door comprising.
a door framework having a main core with an upstand portion for a double rebate configuration with a door frame profile, the main core having an interior and an exterior facing surface, an outward facing peripheral edge surface and top and bottom edges, a pane! skin applied to each of the interior facing surface and exterior facing surface, and an edging strip configured according to any one of the above embodiments applied to the outward facing peripheral edge surface.
Preferably, the door further comprises substantially planar edge strips applied to one or both of the top and bottom edges of the framework.
In a still further aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of forming a door comprising the steps of: providing "an edging strip according to any one, of the above embodiments; forming a door framework comprising a main core with an upstand portion for a double rebate configuration with a door frame profile, the main core having an interior and an exterior facing surface, an outward facing peripheral edge surfacer and top and bottom edges, the outward facing peripheral edge surface having a specific width defined as the distance between the interior and an exterior facing surface of the main core; removing at least a part of the lateral extension portion of one or each of the first portion and the second portion of the edging strip to expose free ends of the first portion and second portion such that the width defined by the length between the free ends of the edging strip is the same as the width of the outward facing peripheral edge surface of the door framework; securing the edge strip to the outward facing peripheral edge surface of the door framework such that the exposed free end of the first portion is flush with the exterior facing surface of the main core, and the exposed free end of the second portion is flush with the interior facing surface of the main core.
Preferably, the method comprises the further step of: securing a skin panel to each of the interior and exterior surfaces of the door framework.
Preferably, the method comprises a further step of: securing an edge panel to the top and bottom edges of the door framework Preferably, the method comprises a further step of: securing a seal member to the skin panel on the exterior facing surface of the door.
Preferably, the method comprises a further step of: securing a seal member receiving member to the skin panel on the exterior facing surface of the door.
The present invention provides many advantages over known edging strips and doors, including edging strip is adaptable for any width of door slab, rather than being a standard size to suit one door slab width. The edging strip may also allow any size of rebate on the door slab so that a double rebate door slab may be provided to suit any UPVC, timber or aluminium frame. The unique sealing feature of a groove channel accepts a push gasket or sealing element to create a seal to the interior surface of the door.
The use of a sealing projection, such as a t-barb, provides ease of positioning and a stronger hold enabling the doors much more efficiently and accurately. The edging strip of the present invention is designed to be applied to the door slab then the door skin panels are then applied over the free ends of the edging strip providing better weather sealing qualities and enabling the application of a coloured or grained edge band to match the colour of the door skin panel providing a more aesthetically pleasing product.
The present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings which show. by way of example only, embodiments according to the invention. In the drawings: Fig. 1 is a side view of an edging strip for a door framework according to one embodiment of the invention; Fig. 2 is a top view of the edging strip in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a perspective view from below of the edging strip of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a sectional exploded view showing application of he edging strip shown in Fig. 1 to a door framework; Fig. 5 is a sectional view a door framework formed according to the invention; Fig. 6 is a sectional view of the door amework of Fig. 5 mounted to a door frame profile; Fig. 7 is:a side view of an edging strip for a door framework according to another embodiment of the invention; Fig. 8 is a top view of the edging strip in Fig. 7; Fig. 9 is a perspective view from below of the edging strip of Fig. 7; Fig. 10 is a sectional exploded view showing application of the edging strip shown in Fig. 7 to a door framework, and Fig, 11 s a sectional view of a door formed according to the invention; Referring to the drawings, there is shown an edging strip, indicated generally by the reference numeral 1, for a door framework 2 of the type comprising a main core:3 with an upstand portion 4 for a double rebate configuration with a door frame profile 5, the main core 3 having an interior facing surface 6 and an exterior facing surface 7, an outward facing peripheral edge surface 8 and top and bottom edges 9.
The edging strip 1 comprises a first portion 10 for mounting to the outward facing peripheral edge surface 8 and a second portion 11 connected to the first portion 10 operable to extend along at least part of the outer surface of the upstand portion 4 of the door framework 2.
In the instance shown, the first portion 10 is substantially planar, and the second portion 11 has a section lla that extends substantially perpendicular to the first portion 10 and a section 11 b that extends substantially parallel to the first portion 10 so that the perpendicular section lla and parallel section llb in use are configured overlie the upstand portion 4 of the door framework 2 It will be understood that alternative contours of the upstand portion 4, such as would be expected with rebates of different size and dimension, may be compensated for by appropriate configuration of the second portion 11a, 11 b and that reference to the specific arrangement shown should in no way be seen as limiting, The first portion 10 and the second portion 11 each comprise -a lateral extension portions 12 that are operable to be removed, and which when removed expose respective free ends13, 14 such that when the edging strip 1 is secured to the outward facing peripheral edge surface:6 of a door framework 2, the exposed free end 13 of the first portion 10 is flush with the exterior facing surface 7 of the main core 3, and the exposed free end 14 of the second portion 11 is flush with the interior facing surface 6 of the main core 3.
In the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 to 6, the edging strip 1 comprises a resilient seal or gasket 15 in a region between the first portion 10 and the second portion 11 for forming a seal between the edging strip 1 and the door frame profile 5. The resilient seal or gasket 15 is mounted in a seal receiving channel 16 formed by the first portion 10 and the second portion 11, which channel 16 is dimensioned to fit into a complimentary core recess 17 formed in the main core 3 of the docr framework 2, the seal channel 16 when fitted to the main core 3 arranged to follow the contour of the core recess 17, As shown, the the seal receiving channel 16 is a substantially U-shaped formation in the edging strip 1 and comprises a first leg 16a, a second leg 16b and a third leg 16c. The first leg 16a extends perpendicular to the plane of the first portion 10, the second leg 16b extends perpendicular to the first leg 16a and forms a base wall of the seal receiving channel 16, and the third leg 16c extends perpendicular to the second leg 16b and along a part of the upstand portion 11a of the door framework 2.
The edging strip 1 further comprises a sealing projection 18 that extends from an underside surface 10a of the first portion 10 for engagement in a projection receiving channel in the door framework 2. In the instance shown, the sealing projection 18 is a resilient t-barb formation which, together optional resilient fitting projection 20 extending from the core facing side surface of the sealing channel 16, holds the edging strip 1 in place on the outward facing peripheral edge surface 8 of the door framework 2 during fitting.
It will be understood that the edging strip may be secured to the outward facing peripheral edge surface 8 using adhesive, screws or other fixings and the sealing channel 16. The sealing projection 18 of the edging strip 1 are spaced apart such that the exposed free end 13 of the first portion 10 is flush with the exterior facing surface 7 of the main core 3 and the exposed free end 14 of the second portion 11 is flush with the interior facing surface 6 of the main core 3 when the edging strip 1 is secured to the outward facing peripheral edge surface 8.
With reference to Figs. 7 to 11, a further embodiment of an edging strip 1 according to the invention is shown, in which the first portion 10 comprises a lock receiving channel formation 30 for fitting into a complimentary locking recess 31 of the door framework 2, Resilient fitting projections 32 are provided on the core side facing surface of the channel formation for holding the edging strip 1 in place on the outward facing peripheral edge surface 8 of the door framework 2 during Irtting using adhesive screws or other fixings.
As shown in Fig. 11, second portion 11a of the edging strip 1 comprises a seal holding means, shown as a seal retaining channel 33 with inward disposed holding arms 34, thr holding a sealing element 35 arranged to seal against an interior facing surface of the door frame profile 5. It will be understood however that the sealing element 35 may alternatively be mounted to the door profile 5 for sealing engagement against the second portion 11 a of the edging strip 1. An additional sealing element 36 may be provided between the door frame profile 5 and the exterior facing surface 7 of the door framework 2.
The present invention also relates to a door 40 comprising, as shown in Figs. 6 and 11, a door framework 2 having a main core 2. with an upstand portion 4 for a double rebate configuration with a door frame profile 5, the main core having an interior facing surface 6 and an exterior facing surface 7, an outward facing peripheral edge surface 8 and top and bottom edges 9. The edging strip 1 as described is applied to the outward facing peripheral edge surface 8. Planar edge strips are also applied to one or both of the top and bottom edges 9 of the framework 2. A panel skin 41a is applied to the interior facing surface 6 and panel skin 41b is applied to the exterior facing surface 7 to fully seal the door.
The present invention also relates a method of forming such a door 40 comprising an initial step of: providing an edging strip 1 according to any one of the above embodiments, and forming a door framework 2 with an upstand portion 4 for a double rebate configuration with a door frame profile 5 in which the outward facing peripheral edge surface 8 of the door framework has a specific width defined as the distance between the interior facing surface 6 and the exterior facing surface 7 of the main core 3. The required receiving channels and recesses 17, 19, 31 may be formed in the core 3 as required or as desired to receive the edging strip 1.
Next, at least a part of the lateral extension portion 12 of one or each of the first portion 10 and the second portion 11 of the edging strip 1 is removed, such as by cutting'or snapping, to expose free ends 13, 14 of the first portion 10 and second portion 11. The amount of the lateral extension portions 12 removed is determined so that the distance between the free ends 13, 14 of the edging strip 1 is the same as the length of the outward facing peripheral edge surface 8, which is the distance between the interior facing surface 6 and the exterior facing surface 7 of the main core 3.
Then, the edge strip 1 is secured by adhesive, screes, or other fixings to the outward facing peripheral edge surface 8 of the door framework 2 so that that the exposed free end 13 of the first portion 10 is flush with the exterior facing surface 7, and the exposed free end 14 of the second portion 11b is flush with the interior facing surface 6. Skin panels 41a, 41b are then secured to the interior and exterior surfaces 6, 7 of the door framework 2 to thereby seal the free ends 13, 14 of the edging strip 1. An edge panel is then secured to the top and bottom edges of the door framework. Sealing members according to the above embodiments may be secured to the edging strip 1 and/or panels 41a, 41b as required. Any required locks, glass and hardware, such as a letterbox may be fixed to the core 3 using conventional methods. The door 40 may then be hung to a door frame profile 5.
Aspects of the present invention have been described by way of example only and it should be appreciated that additions and/or modifications may be made thereto without departing from the scope thereof as defined in the appended claims.

Claims (24)

  1. CLAIMS1. An edging strip for a door framework of the type comprising a main core with an upstand portion for a double rebate configuration with a door frame profile, the main core having an interior and an exterior facing surface, an outward facing penpheral edge surface and top and bottom edges, the edging strip comprising: a first portion for mounting to the outward facing peripheral edge surface; a second portion connected to the first portion operable to extend along at least part of the outer surface of the upstand portion of the door framework; wherein, the first portion and the second portion each comprise a lateral extension portion that is operable to be removed to expose free ends of the first portion and second portion such that when the edging strip is secured to an outward facing peripheral edge surface of a door framework the exposed free end of the first portion is flush with the exterior facing surface of the main core, and the exposed free end of the second portion is flush with the interior facing surface of the main core.
  2. 2. An edging strip for a door framework as claimed in Claim 1, in which the first portion is substantially planar, and the second portion has a section that extends substantially perpendicular to the first portion and a section that extends substantially parallel to the first portion, whereby the perpendicular section and parallel section of the second portion are adapted to overlie the upstand portion of the door framework.
  3. 3. An edging strip for a door framework as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, in which the edging strip comprises a resilient seal or gasket in a region between the first portion and the second portion for forming a seal between the edging strip and a surface of the door frame profile.
  4. 4. An edging strip for a door framework as claimed in Claim 3, in which, the resilient seal or gasket is mounted in a seal receiving channel formed by the first portion and the second portion.
  5. 5. An edging strip for a door framework as claimed in Claim 4, in which, the seal receiving channel is dimensioned to fit into a complimentary core channel formed in the main core of the door framework, the seal channel when fitted to the main core arranged to follow the contour of the core channel
  6. 6. An edging strip fora door framework as claimed in Claim 4 or Claim 5, in which, the seal receiving channel is a substantially U-shaped formation in the edging strip.
  7. 7. An edging strip for a door framework as claimed in Claim 6, in which tne U-shaped channel comprises a first leg, a second leg and a third leg, whereby the first leg extends perpendicular to the plane of the first portion, the second leg extends perpendicular to the first leg and forms a base wall of the seal receiving channel, and the third leg extends perpendicular to the second leg and along a part of the upstand portion of the door framework.
  8. 8. An edging strip for a door framework as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, further comprising a sealing projection in the first portion
  9. 9. An edging strip for a door framework as claimed Claim 8, in which the sealing projection extends from the underside surface of the first portion for engagement in a projection receiver in the door framework.
  10. 10. An edging strip for a door framework as claimed Claim 8 or Claim 9 in which the sealing projection is a resilient t-barb formation. 25

An edging strip for a door framework as claimed Claim 8 to Claim 10, in which the sealing channel and the sealing projection are spaced apart such that the exposed free end of the first portion of the edging strip is flush with the exterior facing surface of the main core and the exposed free end of the second portion is flush with the interior facing surface of the main core.
  12. 12. An edging strip for a door framework as in any one of the preceding claims, in which the first portion comprises a lock receiving recess for fitting into a complimentary recess of the door framework.
  13. 13. An edging strip for a door framework as in any one of the preceding claims, in which, the second portion mounts one of: a sealing element or a channel for receiving a further sealing element mounted to a door frame.
  14. 14. A door having a framework comprising a main core with an upstand portion for double rebate configuration with a door frame profile, the main core having an interior and an exterior facing surface an outward facing peripheral edge surface and top and bottom edges, and an edging strip configured according to any one of the preceding claims applied to the outward facing peripheral edge surface.
  15. 15. A door as claimed in Claim 14, further comprising a panel skin applied to each of the interior facing surface and exterior facing surface thereof.
  16. 16. A door as claimed in Claim 14 or Claim 15, further comprising substantially planar edge strips applied to one or both of the top and bottom edges of the framework.
  17. 17. A method of forming a door according to any one of Claims 14 to 16, comprising the steps of: providing an edging strip according to any one Claims 1 to 13; forming a door framework comprising a main core with an upstand portion for a double rebate configuration with a door frame profile, the main core having an interior and an exterior facing surface, an outward facing peripheral edge surface and top and bottom edges, the outward facing peripheral edge surface having a specific width defined as the distance between the interior and an exterior facing surface of the main core; removing at least a part of the lateral extension portion of one or each of the first portion and the second portion of the edging strip to expose free ends of the first portion and second portion so that the width distance between the free ends of the edging strip is the same as the width of the outward facing peripheral edge surface of the main core, and securing the edge strip to the outward facing peripheral edge surface so that the exposed free end of the first portion is flush with the exterior facing surface of the main core, and the exposed free end of the second portion is flush with the interior facing surface of the main core.
  18. 18. A method of forming a door as claimed in Claim 17, the method comprising the further step of: securing a skin panel to each of the interior and exterior surfaces of tne main core..
  19. 19. A method of forming a door as claimed in Claim 17 or Claim 18, the method comprising a further step of: securing an edge panel to the top and bottom edges of the main core.
  20. 20. A method of forming a door as claimed in any one of Claims 17 to 19, the method comprising a further step of: securing a sealing member to the skin panel affixed to the exterior facing surface of the door.
  21. 21. A method of forming a door as claimed in any one of Claims 17 to 19, the method comprising a further step of: securing a sealing member receiver to the skin panel on the exterior facing surface of the door to receive a seal member provided on the door frame profile
  22. 22. An edging strip substantially as herein described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawings.
  23. 23. A door framework substantially as herein oescribed with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawings.
  24. 24. A method of forming a door framework substantially as herein described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawings.
