Abstract

253,916. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Whitney, W. R.). June 19, 1925, [Convention date]. Pulp, regulating flow and consistency of.- Apparatus is described in connection with the pulp supply devices for paper-making for automatically maintaining the density of the pulp supply constant, by means of photo-electric apparatus. In place of a single photo-electric cell. for the determination of light intensities, two cells are utilized having a common source of energy to supply to potential across the cells, in conjunction with a single source of light. One cell 10 receives light through a known filter 16 and the other cell 11 receives light through a filter 6 containing the substance to be tested. The cells are so connected that the currents produced in them are opposed and indicated on a galvanometer 13. The pump from the tank 1 and water from the pipe 2 are pumped' by the pump 5 past the transparent window 6 to the papermaking machine, and electric control means are provided actuated through a relay from the galvanometer 13 to control the valve 7 governing the supply of water to the tank 1 so that the density of the pulp supply is substantially constant. Variation of the pulp density causes the current produced to move the galvanometer needle and close a circuit through the relay 18 or 19 energizing one of the coils 20, 21 and thus actuating one of the switches 22, 23 to start the motor 25 to open or close the valve 7. The winding connected across the armature of the motor 25 controls the operation of switch 27 which governs a dynamic breaking resistor 28 to stop the motor 25 promptly. In a modification resistances are inserted on the operation of the relay apparatus in the armature circuit of the motor 25 to vary the speed.
