Abstract

The method comprises making a riser surfacing panel 14 of heat fusible plastics material sheet 15, adhesively bonding the panel to the riser so that its upper edge aligns with the step surface, applying step surfacing 11 comprising plastics material sheet to the step surface, the step surfacing meeting the riser surfacing panel at the step edge, then fusing the plastics material of the step surfacing to the plastics material of the riser panel. The plastics material of the riser surfacing panel and the step surfacing may be the same. The riser surfacing panel may be directly adhesively attached to the riser or may be assembled onto a backing plate 16 which is then adhesively attached to the riser. The backing plate may be aluminium.

Description

Step Surfacing This invention relates to step surfacing.
GB2483750 discloses the application of surfacing to a step by gas torch fusing plastic sheet material to the step surface. The applied surfacing can be a single strip of sheet material, which can cover the entire step or just the front part of it, back from the edge, which may be coloured yellow, for instance, for improved visibility, or may comprise an appliqué of different material for row numbering, a promotional logo or other feature, and which may have an anti-slip provision as by scattering grit to embed in the surface of the plastic while still soft after the gas torch application.
The step risers could also be used for promotional logos and other material, but it is not possible to apply such in the same manner as for the step surface, as the fusing plastics material would run under gravity.
Of course, as the riser does not suffer the same stress as the step surface, it is possible to simply attach a surfacing to it by adhesive, it is known to apply printed plastics material in this way.
However, if, as would clearly be desirable, the riser surfacing were to reach to the top of the riser, there would be an unsealed approximation between step surfacing and riser surfacing that would allow penetration of liquid and particulate material and that would be unattractive to look at.
The present invention affords a means of solving that problem The invention comprises a method for applying step surface and riser surfacing to a step, comprising making a riser surfacing panel of heat fusible plastics material sheet and adhesively bonding the panel to the step riser so that its upper edge aligns with the step surface, then applying step surfacing to the step surface by heat fusing plastics material sheet thereto meeting the riser surfacing panel at the step edge and fusing to the plastics material thereof The plastics material used for the riser panel and for the step surfacing may be the same material.
The riser surfacing panel may be a single sheet or strip of plastics material, or may be assembled from two or more pieces, and may comprise an appliqué-in-matrix design as described in GB2483750. Its design may conform to any health and safety regulations such as areas of colour contrast with step surfacing. The panel may be assembled in situ, by adhesively attaching the pieces individually jig-saw fashion, and this may be suitable for risers that are flat and true, or it may be prior-assembled on a backing plate to which the pieces may be adhesively attached or attached by heat-fusing. The backing plate may be of aluminium.
A method for applying step surface and step riser surfacing to a step according to the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of part of a flight of steps; Figure 2 is a cross section of the edge of a step of the flight of Figure 1 part way through the method; and Figure 3 is a cross section of the step edge of Figure 2 at a second stage of the method.
The drawings illustrate a method for applying step surface and riser surfacing 11, 12 to a step 13, comprising making a riser surfacing panel 14 of heat fusible plastics material sheet 15 on a backing plate 16 and adhesively bonding the panel 14 to the step riser 13a so that its upper edge 14a aligns with the step surface 13b, then applying step surfacing 11 to the step surface 13b by heat fusing plastics material sheet 15 thereto meeting the riser surfacing panel 14 at the step edge and fusing to the plastics material 15 thereof.
The heat fusing is carried out using a gas torch 18, which is used to apply the sheet 15 to the step surface, and, at the edge, softens the material sufficiently to fuse with the material 15 of the riser surfacing panel 14.
The plastics material used for the riser panel 14 and for the step surfacing 11 are the same material, which is a plastics material that softens with heat to fuse to the aluminium/step surface and then hardens to form a hard, hard-wearing surfacing. On the step surface, grit, of glass, flint or other particulate material, is applied as the plastic is cooling so as to sink part way into the soft plastic surface to give an anti-slip surface.
The backing plate 16 can be of aluminium. It can be adhesively bonded to the step 13 riser using an adhesive suitable for the material of the step, which is usually concrete, but possibly also of wood or metal. A two part acrylic adhesive system is ideal.
The surfacing 11, 12 can be plain, made of a single piece of plastic, or comprise an appliqué set into a plastic sheet matrix, as described in GB2483750. The riser surfacing panel 14 is assembled from plastic material matrix I 5a and appliqué 15b, and bonded on to its backing plate before being applied adhesively to the step riser.
If the risers are flat and true, the backing plate 16 may be dispensed with, the riser surfacing being adhesively attached directly to the riser.
