Abstract
A self-weighing chair mechanism that comprises a fixed support element 1 with front and rear ends, having side walls 4 rising out of its plane towards a seating element 2 which comprises descending side walls 3 , also having front and rear ends. The fixed support element 1 has a connection point 10 at its rear end and a connection point at its front end with a pivot 12 for a link 9 that connects to a second pivot 11 in the front end of the seating panel 2. A backrest element 5 consists of a first horizontal part 7 with a front end that is fashioned with a pivot 13 that has an attached link 8 that pivots on a pin 14 which is fixed to side wall 3 of seating element 2. The rear end of said fixed support element 1 may include a pivot 10 on which the first horizontal section 7 of backrest element 5 can pivot and connect to a slot 15 in the side wall 3 of the seating element 2 . The seat 2 may be raised, tilted and pulled backwards when the user reclines in the chair.
Description
Self-weigh mechanism for Office chair Many attempts have been made to create a truly self-weigh mechanism for office chairs. A self-weigh chair enables a user's weight to control the back rest inclination according to that user's seating position.
The mechanism allows the user to incline the back rest simply by shifting his or her weight, i.e. by leaning backwards or forwards, no matter what the weight of the user may be, and experience no or very little bias against the chosen position of reclining.
For such an arrangement to work, the seat and the backrest need to be interconnected through several "pivot and slot" points that allow for lifting and sliding motion as the backrest and consequently the seat is adjusted.
The best one of those is CN20337873U (CoFeMo SW). This discloses a base plate with a rear pivot which connects to the seat panel via a slot connection which allows the seat to lift and slide backwards when the user leans back.
The change in inclination of the back rest changes the position the seat panel relative to the backrest.
A second pivot connects the seat panel with the front end of the back rest lever, also via a slot, thus allowing the back rest lever to raise the seat.
Finally, to ensure that the seat lifts at the front, a link connects the seat panel with the base plate. At rest, this link is slightly inclined out of the horizontal with the upper connection also being the most forward point.
It was, however, noticed that after prolonged use the rear and middle pivots were showing serious wear pointing to excess friction, especially so, where the user was of more than average weight.
Moreover, the heavier the user, the stronger a spring is required to provide counterbalance to return the chair back to upright.
This invention lies in creating a truly self-weighing chair which does not wear out so quickly and does not require a strong spring to overcome friction problems.
The invention discloses a self-weighing chair mechanism comprising a fixed support element with front and rear ends, having side walls rising out of its plane towards a seating element, which seating element also having front and rear ends, said fixed support element moreover comprises connection points at said front end and connection points at said rear end, said front end having a pivot for a link connecting through a second pivot to the front of said seating panel, said mechanism moreover includes a backrest element consisting of a first horizontal part with a front end, which front end is fashioned with a pivot, which pivot has a link attached to it, which link pivots on a pin fixed to said side wall of seat panel.
Detailed description of the invention
The inventive chair consists essentially of three basic main parts. A fixed support element (1) which connects to the chair leg (not shown), a padded seat (2) above the fixed support element (1) and a backrest (5) which consists of a vertical padded section (6) to serve as the actual back rest and a horizontal section (7) which reaches in between the fixed support element (1) and the seating panel (2) and is connected to both.
The fixed support element (1) has side walls (4) rising out of the plane of element (1) towards the seating element (2) and the seating element (2) has side walls (3) descending towards the fixed support element (1), arranged in such a manner that the two sets of sidewalls (3 & 4) fit over each other without interference in any possible mutual position.
The fixed support element (1) comprises connection points (12) at the front and connection points (10) at the rear. The front has a pivot for a link (9) connecting to the front of the seating panel (2) via a second pivot point (11).
The rear of the fixed support element (1) shows a pivot (10) on which the horizontal section (7) of the backrest can pivot and connects to the seating panel (2) by means of a slot (15) in the side wall (3) of that panel (2).
The front end of said backrest element (7) has a link (8) attached to it via pivot (13), which link pivots on a pin (14) fixed to said side wall (3) of seat panel (2) The figures show the chair mechanism in the fully upright, intermediate inclined and fully inclined.
Figure 1 shows the mechanism at rest with the padded section (6) of the back rest (5) vertical and the padded seat (2) in its lowest position. The front link (9) is at its most horizontal position and the rear pivot (10) rests against the top of the slot (15). The center link (8) is slightly inclined backwards, also representing its rest position.
Now the user sits down on the chair and leans slightly backwards.
Figure 2 shows such a possible situation. By leaning backwards, the padded backrest (6) is inclined a few degrees, the rear pivot (10) is forced along its slot (15) pulling the seating panel (2) backwards and lifting it, with the front link (9) being longer that the middle link (8), the seating panel (2) tilts backwards as it is raised.
The maximum backrest inclination, shown in Figure 3, is reached when the rear pivot (7) contacts the bottom of the slot (15), forcing the middle link (8) substantially vertical and the front link (9) up to substantially 45 degrees to the horizontal.
Finally, to ensure that the back rest (6) returns to its vertical position after the user has left the chair, a slight torsion spring is applied around pivot pin (12), one end resting against fixed support element (1) and the other end against second forward pivot pin (11) thus biasing link (9) towards obtaining a horizontal position and consequently bringing the backrest (6) back into its uppermost position.
