Abstract
A safety device, for fitment to a tap spout or a tap fitting, comprises a cylinder of foamed material that is closed at one end and open at the other end, with a longitudinal slit in the cylinder extending from the open end thereof. The foamed material may be a resilient closed cell material. Preferably the closed end of the cylinder is afforded by a cap attached to the foamed material. The device may be produced as a one-piece plastic moulding, with the closed end of the cylinder afforded by part of the one-piece unit. A method of improving safety using the claimed device is also included.
Description
SAFETY DEVICES
Field of the Invention
This invention relates to safety devices and is concerned, more specifically, to devices for fitment over tap spouts and/or tap fittings.
In Patent Specification No. 2 489 849, to which reference should be made, there is described a device for fitment over bath taps, the device comprising a plurality of blocks of waterproof resilient material, means interconnecting the blocks permitting hinged movement thereof relative to one another, and means for releasably securing the blocks in position on top of bath taps.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a safety device that can be used, for example, for fitment to a bath tap spout to protect users from any accidental knocks or injury resulting from touching a hot bath spout.
Many parents wash their sitting-up babies in the kitchen sink and it is an object of the invention to provide a device that can be fitted to the spout of a kitchen sink.
A further possible use of the safety device is for fitment to a lever for operating a tap.
Summary of the Invention
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a safety device for fitment to a tap spout or a tap fitting, the device comprising a cylinder of foamed material that is closed at one end and open at the other end, with a longitudinal slit in the cylinder extending from the open end thereof.
The foamed material may be a resilient closed cell material and the closed end of the cylinder may be afforded by a cap attached to the foamed material. Alternatively, the device may be produced as a one-piece plastic moulding, with the closed end of the cylinder afforded by part of the one-piece unit.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of improving safety that includes the use of a device as defined above.
Brief Description of the Drawing
The single figure of the accompanying drawing is a perspective view of a safety device.
Description of the Preferred Embodiment
The device shown in the drawing comprises a hollow cylinder of foamed material, for example, a resilient, closed cell foamed material with one end of the cylinder open and the other end closed by, for example, a plastic cap attached to the end of the cylinder. Alternatively, the device may be produced as a one-piece plastic moulding, with the closed end of the cylinder afforded by part of the one-piece unit.
There is a slit extending through the wall of the cylinder, starting at the open end of the cylinder and extending for a significant part of the length of the cylinder, either for the full length of the cylinder or stopping short of the capped end of the cylinder.
The whole device can be covered in a waterproof elasticated material, for example, neoprene, polyvinylchloride or silicone rubber.
In use, the open end of the cylinder is fitted over a bath or sink spout and the slit in the cylinder wall of the device enables the device to be used on varying spout widths. When the device is being put on a spout, it is free to expand to cope with the shape of the tap spout and, once fitted, it will remain securely in place without hindering the flow of water through the spout.
The device may be produced in a variety of lengths, for example, 10, 15 or 20 centimetres in length.
The device can be fitted not only over a tap spout but also over a lever for operating a tap.
