Abstract

A hub-less concentric wheel assembly comprises three roller bearings 4 which include neodymium magnets and copper coils 5 and rotate in one direction; and two taper bearings 6, 8 with a printed circuit board assembly (PCBA) and light emitting diodes (LEDs) 3 which revolve in the opposite direction. This contra-rotating movement when the wheel turns generates electricity to power the LEDs, and produce a colourful lighting effect dependent the speed the wheel spins. The faster the wheel rotates, the faster the lights flicker. A locking collar 1 may secure all the components in place against a mounting plate 9. The PCBA and LEDs might be embedded in a translucent moulded outer wheel 2. This aesthetic lighting effect is intended for use in Rollerblades (RTM), scooters and skateboards.

Description

Intellectual Property Office Application No. GII1420003.4 RTM Date:27 July 2015 The following terms are Registered Trade Marks and should be read as such wherever they occur in this document: Rollerblade Intellectual Property Office is an operating name of the Patent Office www.gov.uk /ipo Title Concentric wheel assembly Particular Problem Solved by Invention Roller-skating and skateboarding through the busy city Centre at dusk by enthusiasts all over the world has increasingly become popular as huge numbers could be observed IV leralading and skateboarding through the streets. Children also return from schools ridding on their scooters in increasing darkness at wintertime. Safety on the roads and pavements and the importance of being seen by motorists and other road users has become an issue of great concern. Then there is the little matter of many children and young people not getting enough exercise.
Statement of Invention
ion relate to a hub-less and axle free concentric wheel assembly for use in skateboards, rollerblades, and scooters, featuring 3 sets of bearings consisting of a standard roller bearing with multiple neodymium magnets and copper coils that rotate one way and 2 sets of taper bearings with PCBA and LEDs that rotate the other way therefore producing electricity and an RGB effect the faster the inner wheel spins against the outer translucent wheel without the use of an axle.
Background
As I reflected on the. enchanting aspects of one of my previous inventions, the Hoop and Steering handle I olling Toy, patent number GB2469066, I began to wonder how the manifested attractive qualities could be shared and enjoyed on a much hander scale in the general leisure industry. A little later, 1 found myself listening to Beethoven's 3rd symphony, the Eroica, and I was soon inspired by the fascinating history behind the grand composition.
Beethoven had written a set of variations on theme that he had used several times. He first used the theme in the finale of his ballet, The Creatures of Prometheus, and later as a set of piano variations...The Eroica Variations. This theme however featured prominently in the 4th movement, the allegro molto, in his large scale work of emotional depth and structural rigor, the 3rd Symphony, The Eroica, which lasts about 50 minutes in performance, a first in symphonic history...
Homage Beethoven A First in Symphonic history! Not altogether dissimilar from the objective of an inventor, to be the first to try something new. And so it was that Beethoven becomes the inspiration that fuels the desire to develop a simple idea into something a tittle grand with hopefully, the necessary inventive steps along the way that gives us the wow factor. While Beethoven reworked one of his favourite tunes he had used previously only in the 4th movement, the other three movements, the 1st, 2nd, & 3rd where original compositions, which one may refer to as genuine innovations, an exciting method that is a source of inspiration for this set of inventions. And in homage to Beethoven, we have the following," Rollerblade featuring the concentric wheel system: Eroica symphony, 1st movement. Hyde Park} Skateboard featuring the concentric wheel system: Eroica symphony, 2nd movement {Kensington Gardens} Scooter (2 wheels) featuring the concentric wheel -n Eroica symphony, 3rd movement {Regents Park { Scooter (3 wheels) featuring the concentric wheel system: Eroica symphony, 4th movement {Holland Park There are apparently similar examples to the reworking of an old idea in the History-of Art, instances where. a 20 minute play for a theatre stage was revamped, updated and. made into a 2 and half hour epic film for the big screen to the delight of the World and general enrichment of the arts. Indeed, in Science & Technology, the old idea of a telephone has been reworked such that the World now has mobile phones and smart phones, then of course the old Victorian idea of a hoop and steering handle rolling toy was reworked by s ccessfully incorporating new inventive steps and bringing the ancient toy into the 21st century. So it was that I then imagined what possibilities would result if the basic idea in my previous endeavour, the Hoop and Steering Handle Rolling Toy 1GB 2469066 (31.03.2009) Symeon Adebayo Onipc-de}, were to be developed into an epic undertaken. Most importantly, it was hoped that in initiating the first tentative steps, admirable innovations would emerge in this magical journey of discovering what is possible with a little imagination.
As problems were ncountered in developing the idea, solving those problems required the full use of our creative instincts, there were serious challenges in providing innovative solutions, and being inventive in finding solutions was what we had hoped would be the case when the journey to develop the idea was initiated. A commissioned worldwide patent search report had indicated that there is nothing original in simple lighted wheels with LED's. These have been done several times according to the patent report. Concentric wheels incorporating free rotating inner rings that generate electricity which powers kGB LED's that somewhat creates a floating effect as if it were a Spacecraft, remains the goal that must be stubbornly stuck to in spite of the numerous difficulties encountered in bringing the idea into fruition, When for instance, questions were raised as to the practicality of incorporating the crux of the original idea of 3 concentric contra-rotating rings of about 500mm to a wheel product of around l /10 of the size, the search for innovative solutions compelled us to think slightly outside the box. The conventional skateboard, rollerblade or scooter would not be the starting point. in other words, it was not a question of how to fit a jet engine unto a conventional skateboard, but rather, how to go about building a skateboard, rollerblade, scooter around a jet engine, and more importantly, of greater relevance to the present invention, how to go about constructing a. scooter, rollerblade and skateboard around a concentric wheel system..
Again, there was some hope that substantial and meaningful innovations would. result in our bid to solve the problem. There were huge reservations on the practicality of adding a 3rd concentric wheel and the significant engineering issues that Wray limit the functionality of the product as a result of incorporating the array of e ectronics required for the proposed concentric free rotating wheel system for skateboard, irollerblade & scooter. Once again, in combating the challenges, we were compelled to think creatively and ended up 'with fascinating possible innovative pluses including the added advantage of the opportunity to train the leg muscles that would be of enormous interest and commercial application in the leisure and keep fit industry. Even so, we ended up employing roller bearings and 2 sets of taper bearings that allow the multiple Neodymium magnets to freely rotate with the least amount of friction inside the coils and the PCBA.
The little matter of cost resulting from incorporating the array of component was not to deter or dampen the enthusiasm in the inventive endeavour either, noting that while one may walk into Tesco and purchase a mobile phone for just £19.99, or even as little as E10.00, there are many who are willing to pay up to £700.00 for a phone, though we may refer to them as smart phones, upgrades on mobile, phones, but still fulfilling the basic function of enabling the user to unicate while mobile. People have been known to sleep on the cold pavement overnight in front of the Apple store for the privilege of acquiring the upgraded and highly innovative new generation of mobile phones. We were thus energized and inspired to continue to make the necessary inventive steps in developing concentric free rotating wheel m for skateboard, roilerblade and scooter, with a 3-wheet scooter ion for the under 5's.
Description
Contained in the inventions is a set of RGB _,ED light up wheels that function by the employment of components that spin independently around a hub-less and axle free housing. 3 sets of bearings are featured so that the concentric wheel system can fUnction properly. The standard roller bearing set enables the housing containing the neodymium magnets to rotate one way, while the 2 sets of taper roller bearings allow the wheel with the coils, PCBA and LEDs to rotate the other way. The neodymium. magnets are attached inside a collar, which provides a partial housing for all 3 hearing cages.
By the use of a combination of roller and taper hearings, the array of Neocymium magnets spin past copper coils thus generating electricity to power the LED's embedded in the translucent wheel. The faster the wheel rotates, the faster the LED lights will flicker thus generating an RUB effect that permeates through the outer translucent moulded wheel.
The free rotating concentric wheel system has been designed performance in mind. in utilizing roller bearings and 2 sets of taper bearings, the multiple Neodymium magnets are allowed to freely rotate with least amount of friction inside the coils and the PCBA, in the event of providing the power to light up the array of LED's. In spite of the array of components featured, the concentric free rotating wheels have been assembled in such a way that combines maximum performance with minimum size.
The components featured in the concer (a) Outer translucent wheel mould that allows light to permeate outwards, (h) An inner G that spins the magnets past the coils which results in the generation of electricity to power the LED's (c) Locking collar that secures all the components in place against the mounting plate (d, The mounting plate of the concentric wheel as- then fixed directly onto the chassis, and without the need of an axle, this gives the enchanting impression of a floating wheel. Magic! Similar technology used in the rollerblade is employed in the skateboard and scooter, (with a 3 wheel scooter version Ior the under 5s), The style and dimension employed in the skateboard range for:instance, allow the wheel to conform to the structure and functions of skateboard and long boards as possible, such that the truck of the skateboard is modified in a manner that allows the mounting plate to bolt directly in place resulting in the RGB wheel spinning freely and independently.
