Abstract

A table decoration or novelty item for creating a flow of dry ice vapour. The item has a base housing or receptacle 10 to be filled with water Y through opening 11, and a cover member or lid 30, which when assembled have the overall shape of a champagne bottle. A removable chamber or tube 20 to hold dry ice Z sits largely inside the base housing, with a tapered projection 21 at one end to sit over the opening of the base housing, and a removable screw cap 22 at the opposing end of the tube. Apertures 23 in the walls of the tube allow liquid in the receptacle to mix with dry ice in the tube. This will generate dry ice vapour or mist which then can flow from the tube, through the gap 33 between cover member and receptacle, creating a display of mist or white smoke.

Description

TITLE: Novelty Item The present invention relates to a novelty item, and especially a novelty item which secretes flow of dry ice vapour.
According to the present invention there is provided a novelty item comprising: a) a base housing to store a supply of warm water, said housing having an exit port, b) a chamber adapted to store dry ice and adapted to be positioned in the housing and allow water in the housing to mix with dry ice to generate dry ice vapour, and c) a cover member adapted to cover the housing exit port but allow dry ice vapour to exit into ambient air between the cover member and the housing.
In one embodiment the base housing is in the shape of the lower section of a champagne bottle and the cover member is in the shape of the upper section of a champagne bottle.
The chamber may be in the form of a tube which slides in and out of the housing exit port. The tube may have a widened one end to sit over and project away from the exit port with the tube in the housing. The tube may have a removable cap at another end to allow dry ice to be placed in the tube. The tube may be perforated to allow water to enter the tube and mix with dry ice in the tube.
Preferably the cover member sits on the tube widened one end to space the cover member from the housing.
The cover member may have an open face with an inwardly directed flange to engage with a widened one end of the chamber and allow flow of dry ice vapour into the cover member. The flange may include open or more apertures to allow the flow of dry ice vapour through the flange into ambient air.
The tube may be formed of two moulded components assembled together.
The cover member may be formed of two moulded components assembled together.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a perspective view of the a base housing, chamber and cover member assembled, Figure 2 shows an exploded part cutaway view of the base housing, chamber and cover member, and Figure 3 shows a cross section view of the base housing, chamber and cover member assembled.
Referring to the drawings there is shown a novelty item in the form of a plastics champagne bottle 1.
Bottle 1 has a plastics moulded base housing 10 in the shape of the lower section of a champagne bottle to store a supply of warm water Y, e.g. from a kettle or hot water tap. Housing 10 has an annular exit port 11 at an upper end.
A plastics moulded tubular chamber 20 is provided adapted to store dry ice and adapted to be positioned in the housing and allow water in the housing to mix with dry ice to generate dry ice vapour. Chamber 20 may be formed of two moulded components 20A,20B assembled together. The chamber slides in and out of the housing exit port 11. Chamber 20 has a widened tapered annular projection 21 at one end to sit over and project away from the exit port 11 with the chamber 20 in the housing 10.The other end of chamber 20 has a removable screw cap 22.
Chamber 20 is adapted to be filled with dry ice Z by removing cap 22. After cap 22 is replaced, the tube can be placed in the housing 10 filled with hot water. Walls of chamber 20 are perforated with apertures 23 which allows water in housing 10 to enter the chamber and mix with the dry ice. The dry ice vaporises and vapour can exit an annular open end 24 of projection 21.
A plastics moulded cover member 30 is in the shape of the upper section of a champagne bottle. Cover member 30 is adapted to cover the housing exit port 11 but allow dry ice vapour to exit into ambient air between the cover member and the housing. Cover member 30 has an open face 31 with an inwardly directed angled annular flange 32 which engages with and sits on the tapered flange 21 of the chamber 20. Flange 32 includes apertures 33 to allow the flow of dry ice vapour entering cover member 30 to exit through the flange into ambient air. Engagement of flange 32 with flange 21 spaces the perimeter of open face 31 from the housing 10.
The cover member 30 may be formed of two moulded components 30A,30B assembled together.
In use the novelty item may be used at parties, weddings and the like. The flow of dry ice vapour as shown by arrows X from the champagne bottle gives a dramatic visual display.
The invention may take a form different to that specifically described above. For example the housing and cover could represent a shape other than a bottle of champagne. For example the base housing could be a stand and the cover member a figure such as a cartoon character and the novelty item used for children's parties.
Further modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the present invention.
