Description

Compositions for Emanation of Volatile Material Formulations
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to compositions for emanation of volatile material formulations and, particularly but not exclusively, to compositions containing a fragrance and/or an insecticide and/or a pesticide where the emanation is affected by melting without burning said compositions.
Background
There are numerous known examples of compositions containing a fragrance and/or an insecticide where the emanation is affected by melting without burning said compositions, one example is AIRWICK® Wax Melts as sold by Reckitt Benckiser wherein a block of fragranced wax is provided which is suitably shaped to allow a pre-determined dosage block of said wax to be snapped away and this dosage block can be placed on a melting plate device for emanation. The melting place device comprises an electrically-powered heater in communication with a melting bowl, the sides of which are sized to be large enough to retain the dosage block of wax, once melted, therewithin. In use, the heater heats the bowl to a pre-defined temperature which is higher than the melting temperature of the fragranced wax but lower than the flash point thereof which causes the dosage block to entirely melt into a pool of molten wax and from this state the fragrance evaporates and emanates into the surrounding environment leaving the wax in the bowl.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved composition which is capable of releasing volatile materials at different rates and other associated benefits.
Summary of Invention
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided therefore a composition comprising: a wax composition comprising at least one volatile material; a liquid and/or gel composition comprising at least one volatile material; wherein the wax composition completely or substantially completely surrounds the liquid and/or gel composition; and wherein the at least one volatile material comprises at least one of: a fragrance; an insecticide; a pesticide.
The compositions of the present invention are advantageous as the liquid and/or gel is completely or substantially completely obscured from view and/or from contact however, in use with an electrically-powered heating plate or the like, as the composition heats the liquid and/or gel therein will escape the surrounding wax composition before the wax composition fully melts and therefore the volatile material(s) in the liquid/gel can be emanated before the emanation of the volatile materials in the wax. As such, a two stage delivery profile of emanated volatile materials can be achieved. Without wishing to be bound by theory, it is thought that as the wax composition heats the surface(s) of the waxcomposition proximal to the heated device will heat quicker than those surfaces distal to the heated device such that the proximal surfaces will rupture to expose the liquid and/or gel contained therein allowing same direct contact with the heated device and thus permitting quicker evaporation thereof whilst the rest of the wax composition is being melted.
The compositions of the present invention further offer improved safety over hitherto known compositions as it is possible to prevent the user from coming into direct skin contact with the liquid and/or gel composition due to the surrounding wax composition. As such a wider palate of volatile materials is available for formulation with the liquid and/or gel composition which enhances the potential usefulness of the present invention.
Preferably the wax composition is made from any suitable known melting wax that may be formulated with a volatile material of fragrance and/or insecticide and/or pesticide. Most preferably the wax composition comprises at least one of: paraffin; palm oil; mineral oil; soybean oil; coconut oil; stearin; beeswax Preferably the gel composition is made from any suitable known melting wax that may be formulated with a volatile material of fragrance and/or insecticide and/or pesticide. Most preferably the gel composition comprises at least one hydrocarbon oil and at least one gelling agent. Even more preferably the gel composition comprises at least one mineral oil and at least one block copolymer.
Preferably the liquid composition is made from any suitable known liquid miscible with a volatile material of fragrance and/or insecticide and/or pesticide. Most preferably the liquid composition comprises an organic solvent.
Where a gel composition is provided, the gel composition is preferably provided with a melting point that is lower than the melting point of the surrounding wax composition. Alternatively, where a gel composition is provided, the gel composition is preferably provided with a melting point that is higher than the melting point of the surrounding wax composition which may facilitate less restrictive manufacturing parameters.
Preferably the wax composition is arranged to have more of more sections thereof having a reduced thickness compared to other sections of the wax composition such that those reduced thickness sections, in use, may melt before the thicker sections thus exposing the liquid and/or gel composition to the heated device.
Preferably the composition is provided in a shaped block wherein the block is shaped to permit a user to easily snap away a dosage block of pre-determined size without exposing the liquid and/or gel composition in the remaining block or the dosage block.
Alternatively the composition may be provided in a single dose format wherein the user simply removes a dosage block of pre-determined size from its packaging and adds it, in use, to a heating device.
The compositions of the present invention are not to be combined with a wick, such as which would be found in a candle or the like. The compositions of the present invention are configured to be melted by heat but without being exposed to a naked flame or point of ignition, such as a spark or the like. The reasons for the non-combination with a wick are multi-fold and include the prevention of an opportunity to ignite the composition whilst in use with an electrically-powered heater or the like which could result in the melted composition becoming a flaming torch. The safety reason also includes prevention of the wick being ignited when the composition is placed somewhere other than intended, such as on a flat surface or in a shallow bowl, as this is could a serious safety hazard as the composition melted exposing the melted materials potentially over a wide area.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided therefore a non-burning composition comprising: a wax composition comprising at least one volatile material; a liquid and/or gel composition comprising at least one volatile material; wherein the wax composition completely or substantially completely surrounds the liquid and/or gel composition; and wherein the at least one volatile material comprises at least one of: a fragrance; an insecticide; a pesticide; and wherein a wick is not provided.
