Abstract

Digital broadcasting receiver comprising an application gateway detecting a trigger event for auto-launching an application and obtaining permission to launch the application from a user in response to the trigger event being detected, wherein the application gateway only launches the application in response to user permission being granted. Information about the app to be executed may be displayed on-screen. When a plurality of trigger events are received the application gateway may be configured to request user selection of one application to be opened. The app gateway may monitor a plurality of sources to detect trigger events which may be received through the broadcast stream or through a Common Interface Plus (CI+) device interface communicating with an external device such as a remote control, smartphone or tablet. Multiple trigger events may be detected using an application identifier in a Programme Map Table (PMT) or Application Information Table (AIT), and may be received through the DVB broadcast stream according to different broadcasting standards. The present invention avoids conflict and priority allocation issues in internet-enabled television set-top boxes (STBs) and smart TV DVB receivers by requiring authorisation via user input when a plurality of apps attempt to auto-launch simultaneously.

Description

Launching an Application in a Digital Broadcasting Receiver
Technical Field
The present invention relates to digital broadcasting receivers. More particularly, the present invention relates to a method of launching an application in a digital broadcasting receiver.
Background of the Invention
In recent years, digital broadcasting receivers have become increasingly more io sophisticated as new features have been added to provide a more interactive viewing experience. Digital broadcasting standards have been developed which allow broadcasters to automatically launch applications on a receiver, for example, an application to allow a user to switch between multiple video streams. However, digital broadcasting receivers are usually only capable of running a single application at a /5 time. As a result, a conflict can occur when a receiver attempts to auto-launch two applications simultaneously. Solutions have been developed in which receivers apply policies and allocate priorities to avoid conflict, for example by giving priority to an application related to the currently-tuned broadcast channel.
The invention is made in this context.

Brief Description of the Drawings
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 schematically illustrates a digital broadcasting receiver, according to an embodiment of the present invention; Figure 2 is a flowchart showing a method of launching an application in a digital broadcasting receiver, according to an embodiment of the present invention; Figure 3 is a flowchart showing a method of launching an application in a digital broadcasting receiver, according to an embodiment of the present invention; and Figure 4 is a flowchart showing a method of selecting an application to be launched in response to a plurality of trigger events being detected, according to an embodiment of the present invention.
Detailed Description -4 -
A digital broadcasting receiver according to an embodiment of the present invention is illustrated in Fig. 1, and a method of launching an application in the digital broadcasting receiver 100 is shown in Fig. 2. The digital broadcasting receiver 100 comprises a receiving module 101 configured to receive and demodulate a broadcast stream no, and an application gateway 102 configured to detect a trigger event for auto-launching an application. The application gateway may be implemented in the form of software instructions stored in a computer-readable storage medium, which when executed by one or more processors, causes the digital broadcasting receiver to perform any of the methods disclosed herein.
Unlike a conventional digital broadcasting receiver in which the application is automatically launched in response to a trigger event, the application gateway 102 is configured to obtain permission to launch the application from a user in response to a trigger event being detected, and to only launch the application in response to user permission being granted. That is, as shown in Fig. 2, in response to a trigger event being detected in step S201 the digital broadcasting receiver attempts to obtain user permission to launch the application in step S202, for example by displaying a message overlaid on top of broadcast video content currently being reproduced. In response to the user confirming that the application can be launched, the application gateway passes the application to the associated middleware, which then proceeds to execute the application in a conventional manner.
In the present embodiment the digital broadcasting receiver 100 further comprises a user interface 103 configured to receive user input indicating whether or not permission is granted to launch the application. Various types of user interface may be used in embodiments of the present invention, including but not limited to a conventional remote controller, a smartphone or tablet device, a voice control unit, and a gesture control unit.
An example of a trigger event in a digital broadcasting receiver configured according to the Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) standard may be an application identifier being received in a Programme Map Table (PMT) and/or in an Application Information Table (AlT) in a DVB broadcast stream. In a conventional DVB receiver, an application is automatically launched in response to PMT or AlT being received which includes the application identifier. -5 -
In the present embodiment, once an application has been launched in response to user permission being granted, the application gateway function is suspended until completion of the broadcast application lifecycle. The application gateway function is then resumed once the broadcast application is completed or terminated. Since the application identifier may persist in the PMT and/or AIT whilst the application is running, this can avoid a situation occurring in which the receiver repeatedly requests user permission after the application has already been launched.
In the present embodiment, the digital broadcasting receiver 100 further comprises a /0 device interface 104 configured to communicate with an external device 120. The application gateway is configured to monitor the device interface 104 to detect trigger events. In the present embodiment the device interface 104 is a Common Interface (CI) configured to communicate with a Conditional Access Module (CAM) according to the CI Plus (CI+) standard, but other types of device interface and external device may be provided in other embodiments. Furthermore, in other embodiments the device interface may be omitted.
Instead of or in addition to trigger events received through the broadcast stream no, other trigger events such as application commands may be received from the external device 12o through the device interface 104. In some embodiments trigger events may also be generated inside the digital broadcasting receiver, as opposed to being received from an external source.
In addition, in the present embodiment the digital broadcasting receiver further comprises a display controller 105 for controlling a display unit 130 to display information. The application gateway 102 is configured to obtain permission from the user by displaying a request for user input in response to the trigger event being detected. The request may only be displayed for a certain time period, for example 5-10 seconds. When displaying the request, the application gateway 102 also controls the display controller 105 to display information about the application to be launched. In some embodiments, the information about the application may also be displayed in response to a user request to view information about any applications that are currently available. Examples of types of information that may be displayed in embodiments of the invention include the channel number, source of the request, and the application identifier. -6 -
By requesting user approval before launching an application, a conflict when an application attempts to launch whilst another application is already running can be avoided. For example, a conflict may occur when trigger events are received simultaneously through a plurality of sources, such as the broadcast stream no and the device interface 106. In addition, some broadcast applications are configured to send information back to the broadcaster, for example information about a user's viewing habits. Embodiments of the present invention can allay user concerns about privacy, since a user can choose not to allow an application to automatically run if they are concerned that the application may make their biographical information accessible to a to third party. Embodiments of the present invention can also allay user concerns about security, since a user can choose not to allow an application to automatically run if they are concerned that the application may have been tampered with, or interfered with, with intent to cause harm such as a man in the middle attack.
Referring now to Fig. 3, a method of launching an application in a digital broadcasting receiver is illustrated according to an embodiment of the present invention. In the present embodiment, the application gateway detects a trigger event by monitoring a plurality of sources of trigger events, such as a broadcast stream and a CI+ interface, in step 8301, and periodically checking whether a trigger event has been detected in step 8302. When a trigger event is detected, in step 8303 the application gateway attempts to obtain permission by displaying a request for user input and information about the application to be launched.
In response to user input being received in step 8304, then in step 8305 the application gateway checks whether or not the user input corresponds to a command to run the application, that is, whether or not user permission has been received. The application gateway only proceeds to launch the application in step 8306 if user permission is received. If the user does not grant permission, then the application gateway proceeds to step 8307 and does not launch the application.
Referring now to Fig. 4, a method of selecting an application to be launched in response to a plurality of trigger events is illustrated, according to an embodiment of the present invention. As in the method of Fig. 3, the application gateway monitors a plurality of sources in step 8401 and periodically checks whether a trigger event is detected in step 8402. However, in other embodiments only a single source of trigger events could be monitored in step 8401. -7 -
In response to a trigger event being detected, then in step 8403 it is checked whether a plurality of trigger events have been detected. Here, the plurality of trigger events can include trigger events from the same source, for example multiple trigger events received through the broadcast stream, and/or can include trigger events from different sources, for example a trigger event from the broadcast stream and a trigger event from the CI+ interface. If only a single trigger event is detected, then in step 8404 the application gateway proceeds to request user permission in order to launch the application, as described above with reference to Figs. 2 and 3. However, if a plurality of trigger events are detected, then in step 8405 the application gateway is configured to request selection of one of the applications by a user. In response to user input being received in step 8406 after displaying the request, in step 8407 the application gateway checks whether one of the applications associated with one of the plurality of trigger events has been detected. If the user input selects one of the applications, then the selected application is launched in step 8408. On the other hand, if the user input does not select one of the applications, for example if the user input comprises a request not to launch any of the applications associated with the plurality of trigger events, then in step 8409 the application gateway proceeds without launching an application.
Embodiments of the invention have been described in which a digital broadcasting receiver always requests user permission before launching an application. If more than one trigger event is detected, the application gateway is configured to only allow a user to select a single application, to avoid a conflict occurring between different applications. In addition, a user's privacy concerns can be addressed by allowing the user to choose whether or not applications are executed by the receiver.
Whilst certain embodiments of the invention have been described herein with reference to the drawings, it will be understood that many variations and modifications will be possible without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the accompanying claims. -8 -
