Abstract

The renewable utilities trailer is a self contained power and utilities trailer designed to be portable and towed to site by a vehicle. Contained within the unit is an inverter to provide 230V AC power source and 12V DC power source fed by deep discharge batteries which are recharged using trailer mounted solar panels and wind turbine. A mobile router provides mobile wifi signal and propane gas cylinders provide a temporary gas supply. Mounted within the trailer also is a fresh water refillable tank and a water pump. The trailer can provide electricity, gas, internet connections and water. The trailer is designed to be retracted within road laws so as to be removable to any site by separate vehicle. The trailer is intended for use in disaster, flood, hurricane, famine relief situations.

Description

Page 1 Renewable utilities trailer In order to provide utilities to remote locations it is often a requirement to sign up to minimum term contracts, long installation lead times and high costs due to impractical or remote location. This is not always practicable for works such as a 6 month building contract requiring office and welfare facitlities.
To overcome this, I have designed a transportable unit that will provide electricity, internet, gas and water to these remote situations using renewable energies to sustain the power supply. By using this unit, the carbon footprint would be reduced due to not requiring petrol or diesel currently used in the alternative of generators.
This is an instant solution to supplying services with no installation or contracts required.
The unit consists of a metal braked or un braked trailer with wheels and a tow hitch designed to be towed by a separate vehicle. All subsequently mentioned components will be fitted within the confines of the trailer for transportation and then able to expand to its generating position using hinges and air rams once parked and steadied. Enclosed drawings of figure 2 on sheet 2/2 show the parked and extended unit ready for use with figure 3 on sheet 2/2 showing the packed and secured unit ready for transportation. Figure 1 on sheet 1/1 shows a side view with the solar array extended and wind turbine in position and also the location of the components described below and their approximate location. All of the internal trailer components will be covered with fabricated covers to prevent weather ingress during operation.
Electrical characteristics The trailer houses a battery bank of deep discharge batteries mounted inside the trailer on rubber vibration mounts and a unistrut clamping rail to secure them during transportation that supply a 12V or 24V input pure sine wave inverter also mounted on rubber vibration mounts and unistrut rail giving an output of 230V ac 50Hz via a socket outlet mounted on the trailer side. As well as a 230V ac output there is also outlets again mounted on the trailer side for 12 and 24V dc fed directly from the battery bank fused and isolated to electrical requirements. In order to recharge the battery bank, a solar array will provide solar energy through a charge controller along with a wind turbine mounted on the trailer. The solar array is mounted via a rail system and hinged on one side of the trailer so that in Page 2 transportation it will lay flat and latched secure but on parking will rise to a pre set angle through the use of gas struts to maximise solar yield. Any solar panels that fall outside the perimeter of the trailer will be hinged so as to be able to be folded into the perimeter of the trailer for transportation. The wind turbine will be mounted to a telescopic mast on the rear of the trailer which again in transportation will lay flat over the solar array and be locked in position to secure.
Internet access Within the confines of the trailer will be installed a mobile wifi router fed from the battery bank at the necessary DC required voltage. The router will supply a data allowance via a LAN connection or wireless connection through either a contracted or pay as you go sim card. Water
Housed within the trailer will be a fresh water tank that is removable for refilling and is piped to an approved industry outlet mounted on the trailer side for remote connection and extraction of the water via a l2Vdc water pump. Gas
Housed and secured within the trailer will be 2 x gas bottles connected together via a change over valve so that when one bottle empties it is possible to change to the full bottle without disruption to the supply. This change over valve will then have safety isolation valves feeding an industry standard outlet mounted on the trailer sides.
The trailer will provide an all encompassing solution to provide utilities for example to temporary site offices, music and events festivals for services, rallies and remote location houses. It can also provide services in black outs and 3rd world locations where other forms of energy supply are either cost prohibitive or unavailable.
