Abstract

A urine collection and measurement device for use with a bladder diary has a flexible bag 12 with a scale 20 at a lower edge, a row of perforations which allows a substantial upper comer 26 of the bag to be torn off, and on the corner 26 a row of notches with the same indicators as the scale 20.The bag may be a Doypackâ„¢ bag. In operation, the user tears off the corner 26, urinates into the bag 12, and stands it on a horizontal surface to record the volume. The user then tears the notch corresponding to the measured volume and retains the corner 26 so as to record the volume in the bladder diary at a later time.

Description

Device for measuring the volume of urIne (2) This invention relates to a device which can be used when it is necessary s to keep a bladder diary, which forms part of the treatment for human urinary disfunction. A record of the volume of liquid consumed and the volume of liquid excreted is kept, usually for a pesiod of a few days.
According to the invention, a urine collection and measurement device comprises;-a liquid-proof, bag-shaped container made of plastics material having a folded end portion which with the sides of the bag forms a "W" section; at a first end of the container remote from the end portion a line of perforations arranged so that a substantial corner of the bag can be removed; and Is at a second end of the container adjacent the folded end portion a first measuring scale by which the volume of any liquid in the container can be measured.
Preferably the device further comprises on said substantial corner a second scale and an adjacent row of notches.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:-Figure 1 illustrates the device before preparation for use; and Figure 1 illustrates the device when prepared for use.
in Figure 1, a urine collection and measurement device 10 comprises a rectangular bag 12 of transparent or translucent flexible plastics material. The bag has opposite long edges 14, 16, and atop edge 17. The tower edge 18 of the bag has within it a folded end portion 19 indicated by the chain dotted line.
The end portion 19 forms, with the faces of the bag, a "W" section; when the bag 12 is putted apart, the end portion 19 allows the device 10 to stand on a flat surface.
S.....
From the midpoint of the long edge 14 to a position about two Thirds of the way along the top edge 17 is a row of perforations 24 through both the visible front face of the bag and also the rear face of the bag 12. ithe perforations define a substantial corner 26 of the bag 12 Along the lower part of the long edge 18 is a scale 20 in millilitres. Along S the upper part of the long edge 14 which is within the substantial corner 26 is a series of notches 22, each notch having an adjacent number corresponding to one of the numbers on scale 20.
When a user wishes to make a measurement of urine, the user tears the bag along the perforations 24 and opens the bag as shown in Figure 2. The upper end of the side 16 and the remaining part of the top edge 17 can be held between the finger and thumb of the user 30; in effect they form a handle. The torn-off part 26 is retained.
lnuse, the device 10 is held between finger and thumb as shown.
A female user can urinate into it while in a squatting position which is physiologically desirable. The device 10 is then placed on a horizontal surface so that it stands on the end portion 19 and the quantity of urine within the device is read from the scale 20. The quantity is recorded by use of the torn-off part 26, by tearing the notch 22 closest to the observed volume, and the tom-off part 26 is retained. The device 10 can then be emptied of urine by inversion over a 2o lavatory bowl and the empty device disposed of in, for example, a sanitary towel bin, or other suitable receptacle such as a nappy bin. Alternatively the device may be constructed of flushable materials so that the device plus the urine can be disposed of in a lavatory bowl. At a later convenient time, the record given by the tom-off part 26 is transferred to the user's bladder diary.
Advantageously, such a device is light in weight and small in size so that : a user can carry the device, or several devices, eq in a handbag or briefcase, for making measurements throughout the day.
* The transparent plastics material of which device 10 is made is rE sufficiently flexible to permit the device to be rolled or folded, but it also has so sufficient streh/rigidity to permit the device 10, when the bag is opened, to **.**.
stay open while urine is deposited in it, and also to retain its shape when placed on a horizontal surface while a volume of urine is measured by the user's observation.
In one example, the bag 12 is of the type disclosed in the patent G81069268, invented by Leon Doyen and often known as a "Doypack " bag. * . * * * *. * * 0 ** * * * * * *0 *
