Abstract

A means of sealing the mitred edge of the strike side of an opening door on a display case with a mitred edge panel of the display case carcass upon which the strike side of the door rests against when closed; where the edge of the door and carcass have a recess into which at least one elongated seal 3 is mounted. The mitred edges and the recessed positioning of the sealing means allow the seal to be concealed and the clearance between the door and the panel is minimal to prevent objects from being pushed into the cabinet. The seal element may be positioned to assist in the alignment of the door with the carcass panel, and may contain attractive elements such as magnet(s) and ferrous strips to assist in the closing and alignment of the door and carcass panel. The recess and sealing means may vary in shape and configuration. The seal may be formed by two sealing elements 3, 4.

Description
Summary of Prior Art
Figure 1, figure 2 and figure 3 show common forms of modern display case, with glass sides (1), glass top (2), opening glass panel (3) and edges suitable for the invention (4). Opening panels may be hinged as shown in figure 4 or have pull and slide mechanisms as shown in figures to provide access.
It is desirable that modern display cases should have the following characteristics: * Minimal framing often with glass to glass edges.
* They should be sealed against dust and airflow.
* All joining edges should remain straight and correctly aligned.
* Mitred joints on edges are considered more aesthetically pleasing * Joining edges should prevent objects such as rulers being pushed through for security and safety reasons.
This is very straightforward on panels that are permanently fixed together, however, display cases require an opening method to put objects in and out, and it is more difficult to achieve the above desirable characteristics with an opening edge.
Existing Standard Arrangements Figure 6 shows a sectional plan view through a traditional compression seal -a side panel (1) with a flat edge that forms an angled joint with the opening panel (2) with a flat edge, the seal (3) is attached to either panel (1), (2). This arrangement performs well on sealing but can push panel (2) out so that it bulges in the middle and is no longer straight and correctly aligned causing issues.
Figure 7 shows a sectional plan view through a modification of the arrangement in figure 6 which introduces a ferrous strip (5) attached to panel (2) and diametrically magnetised cylindrical magnets (4) inserted into the seal (3) which is attached to panel (1), this has the effect of pulling panel (2) and the seal (3) together -this is an effective seal but the flat joint is not as attractive as the mitred joint.
Figure 8 shows a sectional plan view through an alternative arrangement to figure 7 where panel (1) and panel (2) have a mitred edge -this is an effective seal but panel (1) and panel (2) can bulge and the wider gap does not prevent a thin obtrusive object such as a ruler being pushed through.
Figure 9 shows a sectional plan view through an alternative seal arrangement where panel (1) has a mitred and stepped profile and panel (2) has a different mitred and stepped profile where half of the seal (6a) is attached to panel (1) and the other half of the seal (6b) is attached to panel (2) -this is an effective seal but only attracts panel (2) inwards to the edge of panel (1), it does not ositively locate the two panels and bulging of panel (2) can occur. The seal parts (Ga) and (6b) are highly visible from inside and outside the case and detract from the aesthetic.
Summary of the invention
The invention takes the benefit of a one or two part seal arrangement that fits within the mitred stepped profile on the edges of the panels to be joined so that the sealing elements are discretely concealed within the thickness of the panels and the thickness at the inside and outside of the joint is minimal) additionally the seal elements may locate together for alignment purposes and there may be an attractive force that pulls the two panels together on their mitred faces to prevent bulging of both panels.

Detailed description of the invention
For clarity, seal elements (3),(4) are not shown touching. Within the joining method described) seals would be sized to be touching or under compression to make seal.
Figure 10 shows a sectional plan view of an edge joint arrangement, a stepped profile is added to the edge or edges of a panel (1), a stepped profile is added to the edge or edges of a second panel (2), the profiles may be the same or slightly different and when positioned together they form a void (8).
Figure 11 shows a sectional plan view of the invention) a seal element (3) is applied to the mitre stepped profile of panel (1), a seal element (4) is applied to the mitre stepped profile of panel (2) 50 that when the two panel (1)(2) are in position the joint is sealed.
Figure 12 shows that because the two seal elements are positioned within the mitred stepped profile, they are visually unobtrusive at the external corner (6) and internal corner (7) and because the outer edge gap (6) is very small, this prevents a ruler being pushed through the joint.
The seal elements (3) and (4) may be shaped so that they locate and align against each other and because the panels (1),(2) are angular to each other, this helps to keep both panels straight.
The seal elements (3) and (4) may be attracted through a magnetic or other attractive or adhesive force (9), the attractive force between the seal elements means that the joining edge is well sealed.
Because the direction of the attractive force (9) between the seal elements (3) & (4) are at 45 degrees to the surface planes of panel (1) and panel (2), then both panel (1) and panel (2) have a force pulling them together to prevent them bulging.
