Abstract

252,848. Johnson, J. Y., (Badische Anilin & Soda Fabrik). April 22, 1925, Alkyl formates are produced by the action of carbon monoxide on an alcohol at an elevated pressure in the presence of a metal alcoholate and at a temperature of 30-140‹ C., preferably 60- 100‹ C. The carbon monoxide is forced, either continuously or at intervals. into a heated autoclave containing the dehydrated alcohol in which a small amount of sodium or potassium has been dissolved. The gas is preferably introduced below the liquid level in order to assist the stirring. When the reaction is complete, the product is either withdrawn by a reduction valve at the bottom of the autoclave and separately distilled or is distilled off through a valve at the top; the main portion of the alkali alcoholate remains behind in the solid state. The apparatus is preferably protected against the carbon monoxide, either by using a special steel, e.g. steel V2A, or by lining it with a metal such as silver or brass; whilst the carbon monoxide is purified from iron carbonyl, sulphur compounds, and moisture. Pressures of from 60 to 1000 atmospheres are mentioned in the examples. which describe the preparation of methyl, ethyl, and butyl formates from the corresponding alcohols.
