Abstract
252,787. Brutzkus, M. March 5, 1925, Drawings to Specification. Mineral and tar oils.-The processes described in Specifications 149,915, [Class 1 (i), Chemical processes &c.]; 155,776; and 217,747, [Class 1 (i), Chemical processes &-c.], for carrying out reactions in the interior of a compressor are applied to the production of light oils suitable as motor fuel by the cracking and hydrogenation of mineral or tar oils, turpentine oils, pitch, fatty or other oils, resins, coal, sugar, molasses, starch, or cellulosic materials such as hay, straw or wood. Solid materials are injected into the compressor either in solution or in suspension in a liquid. For the hydrogenation, hydrogen or water gas or mixtures of hydrogen with lighting gas, blast furnace gases or gases obtained from coke, anthracite or lignite, may be used. The gases are compressed in an apparatus constructed like a Diesel engine, and liquids are injected into the gas during the compression or expansion stroke, of the piston according as the number of molecules are diminished or increased bv the reaction. Exothermic reactions are carried out while the gas is diminishing in temperature effected by expanding the gas, introducing cool hydrogenating gas or liquid. or cooling the walls of the compressor. Endothermic reactions are carried out while the gases are increasing in temperature effected by compressing the gases, introducing hot gases heating the walls of the compressor, or by electric or other heaters enclosed in the compression chamber. A catalyst may be arranged in an extension of the compression chamber. The operations of cracking and of hydrogenating may be carried out separately during different strokes of the piston or in different cylinders.
