Abstract

There is provided a protective sheet 10 provided with a non- slip surface 16. The protective sheet 10 may comprise cotton and the non-slip surface 16 may comprise plastic, preferably thermoplastic, a rubber, preferably neoprene (poly chloroprene). The non-slip surface 16 may be non continuous and may comprise protrusions 18 extending from the under surface 14 of the protective sheet 10. The protrusions 18 may be circular with a diameter for 3-10mm, preferably 5mm, and may extend 1mm down from the protective sheet 10.

Description

PROTECTIVE SHEET
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to a protective sheet such as a dust sheet used to protect surfaces whilst painting and decorating which has been provided with a non-slip surface.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Protective sheets, such as dust sheets are used by painters and decorators and DIY enthusiasts alike to protect surfaces. Quite often old sheets or curtains are used by the DIY enthusiasts, however, purpose built protective sheets are available for the trade.
Protective sheets are typically either plastic films or sturdy cotton sheets. In some instances the sturdy cotton sheets are provided with a waterproof backing to prevent ingress of fluids through the sheet onto the surface the sheet is protecting.
Whilst such sheets are quite suitable for use on carpets, it is becoming increasingly popular for floors to be wooden or tiled or laminated. Such flooring is unable to grip the sheet and slides on the surface of the floor which is very hazardous. If a person were to move onto the sheet, there is a risk that the sheet will move across the surface of the floor, causing the person to loose balance and even fall. Slips and trips are the biggest cause of injury in the workplace, making up a 3rd of all major injuries at work which cost the industry over £500 million every year.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a protective sheet provided with a non-slip surface. It is highly important to have a grip underfoot in working environments, as there are more risks involved than a slip or trip. During painting and decorating a person could be up a ladder and a slip or trip could be extremely dangerous.
Preferably the non-slip surface comprises a plastics material.
Preferably the non-slip surface comprises a thermoplastic plastics material.
Preferably the non-slip surface comprises rubber.
Preferably the non-slip surface comprises neoprene.
Preferably the non-slip surface is not continuous.
Preferably the non-slip surface comprises a web or net structure.
Preferably the non-slip surface comprises a plurality of protrusions extending in a perpendicular from the under surface of the protective sheet.
Preferably the protrusions comprises circles. In the alternative the protrusion comprise squares, diamonds, triangles, pentagons, hexagons, ovals, lines or any other repeating shape.
Preferably the circles are about 3mm to about 10mm in diameter.
Preferably the circles are about 5mm in diameter.
Preferably the protrusions extend about 1mm from the under surface of the protective sheet.
Preferably the protective sheet comprises cotton.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
Other aspects and features of the present invention will become apparent to those ordinarily skilled in the art upon review of the following description of specific embodiments of the invention in conjunction with the accompanying figures.
Figure 1 illustrates an upper surface of a protective sheet according to a first embodiment of the present invention; Figure 2 illustrates an under surface of a protective sheet according to a first embodiment of the present invention; Figure 3 illustrates a magnified view of a section of an under surface of a protective sheet according to a first embodiment of the present invention; Figure 4 illustrates a cross-sectional view through a protective sheet according to a first embodiment of the present invention; and Figures 5 to 11 illustrate a magnified views of sections of an under surface of a protective sheet according to alternate embodiments of the present invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
Figure 1 illustrates an upper surface 12 of a protective sheet 10 according to a first embodiment of the present invention.
Figure 2 illustrates an under surface 14 of the protective sheet 10. The under surface is provided with a non-slip surface 16. The non-slip surface is made up of a plurality of protrusions 18 extending in a perpendicular from the under surface 14 of the protective sheet 10. The protrusions are formed from a plastics material such as a thermoplastic plastics material, which include but are not limited to rubber and neoprene. The protective mat is formed from a textile material which includes but is not limited to cotton.
Figure 3 illustrates a magnified view of a section of the under surface 14 of the protective sheet 10.
Figure 4 illustrates a cross-sectional view through the protective sheet 10.
In the embodiment illustrated in Figures 1 to 4 the protrusions are circles about 5mm in diameter which protrude about 1mm.
In the alternative, as illustrated in Figures 5 to 10 the protrusions are not limited to being circles and may be for example squares, diamonds, triangles, pentagons, hexagons, ovals, lines or any other repeating shape.
Further in the alternative, as illustrated in Figure lithe protrusions can take the form of a web or net structure.
