Abstract
A cooling device 1 comprising a manifold block having one inlet point and two outlet points, the inlet point having a flexible coiled pipe 5 fitted, the two outlet points having individual taps 8 and 9 fitted. The taps 8 and 9 outlet points are fitted with segmented flexible pipes 6 and 7. Coolant is supplied via pipes being connected to coolant supply point 4. The cooling device is located by means of a dovetail form which locates on the dovetail section 2 on the turret mill. The cooling device is locked in place by locking screw 3.
Description
Cooling Device This invention is a device for supplying coolant to the cutting tool and workplace on a turret milling machine. When a workpiece is being machined the cutting tool and workpiece become hot due to friction generated by the speed of the cutting tool an the resistance of the material being cut, necessitating in the need to apply coolant to both parts.
The standard solution to this requirement is by the use of a long flexible pipe connected to an outlet point and tap on the turret milling machine. However due to the length of pipe needed it can prove difficult to keep the pipe in a stable enough position to maintain a constant and accurate flood of coolant to both workpiece and cutting tool.
To solve this problem the invention will be located on the dovetail section of the ram on the turret milling machine directly behind the machine tool spindle wich drives the cutting tool.
This position will be substantially closed to the cutting tool and workpiece and wil therefore allow the coolant pipes to be much shorter. This will then give more rigidity to the pipe that delivers the coolant to the cutter and workpiece.
The invention will have two outlet points offering the operator choice of wich side the coolant may be directed from, i.e. from either the right side or the left side of the cutting tool, or in some circumstances when a copious supply if coolant is needed both outlets can be directed onto the cutting tool and workpiece at the same time.
The supply of coolant to the invention will be by means of a flexible coiled pipe connected to the coolant outlet point existing on the turret mill. When the invention is fitted to the dovetail ram it will be in a safer position to use and will be in a more accessible position to operate. The operator will not need to lean over the machine table to reach the original coolant on/off tap position located at the side and toward the rear of the turret mill.
When the invention is connected to the existing outlet point via the flexible coiled pipe the supply of coolant may be left permanently on the existing on/off tap. The invention will then only require to be operated from by either one or both of the on/off taps fitted to the invention.
Because the dovetail ram is able to be moved and set by the operator to achieve the best position for the cutting tool and workpiece the distance from the invention to the original coolant outlet point will vary. Therefore the flexible coiled pipe will enable this variable distance to be maintained at all times.
The invention will now be explained by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in wich, figure 1 shows the coolant device fitted to a turret milling machine, the coolant device fitted to the dovetail ram, directly behind the machine tool spindle and connected to the common coolant outlet point by means of the flexible coiled pipe.
Figure 2 shows another optional method of applying coolant to the cutting tool and In figure 1 the cooling device 1 is fitted to the dovetail section 2 on the ram of the turret mill and locked in place by locking screw 3.
The cooling device 1 is connected to the common coolant outlet point 4 of the machine tool by means of the flexible coiled pipe 5. Coolant is applied to the cutting tool and workpiece by means of the segmented flexible pipes 6 and 7. The flow rate of the coolant is controlled by on/off taps 8 and 9. In figure 2 shows the standard method of applying coolant to the cutting tool 10 and workpiece 11 by the flexible pipe 12 connected to the original coolant outlet point 4. Due to the length of thepipe 12 it can prove difficult to maintain a positive and accurate supply of coolant to the cutting tool 10 and workpiece 11. In figure 3 shows another method of applying coolant to the cutting tool 10 and workpiece 11 by means of a segmented flexible pipe 13 connected to the original coolant outlet point 4. The segmented construction of the pipe B allows it to be altered in length to suit the machine tool set up.
