Abstract

The portable airflow control apparatus 1 is for drying a room and comprises a housing 2 adapted to be pneumatically connected to a portable heater (11, figure 2), preferably via receipt of locking projections of the heater in recesses 10. The housing also includes a room air inlet port, room air outlet port, ambient air inlet port, room air exhaust port, controller and switching means. The controller monitors air temperature and humidity when air is being re-circulated within a room being dried until a pre-selected parameter is reached, after which the controller signals the switching means to exhaust re-circulated air from the room. Ambient air from outside the room is drawn either while re-circulated air is exhausted or afterwards. Ideally a duct 6 of the housing defines the room air and ambient air inlets on opposing sides thereof and includes two tangential fans 7 to direct the received air through respective outlet ducts 8 having associated shutters 9. A second duct 4 in the housing can include an axial fan 5 that draws room air in and expels the same either back into the room or outside to ambient via ducting 12. AN RF transmitter-receiver 13 may be provided.

Description

Room Dryinci Aooa.raths and Method This invention relates o the drying. of rooms and other encidsed spaces which may have been flooded or otherwise suffered from water damage. In this patent specification the term "room" is intended to nclude ooms in buildings but also other enclosed places where it is necessary or desirable to remove moisture from the air and within, floors, walls and ceilings or other structures which are at least parfially water permeable and car therefore become damp due to the presence otwater, In patent number GB2488873B there is described a system for drying damp rooms which is based on the pnnciple of sealing the morn from outside a nd then heating the air within the room by circulating it through faridriven heating apparatus until a given parameter is reached, such as a gie.n level of humidity or a steady state temperature level may have been reached or a given time period has elapsed and thereafter exhausting ihe air from the room to the outside and replacihg it with ambient air, the cycle continuing until the room. is sufficiently dry. To achieve this the apparatus is conveniently portable such as by being mounted on a wheeled trolley (as shown in Figures 4 to 7 of that patent) which must bear the weight of the heating apparatus, the re-circulating fans and associated ducting, the combined consequential weight thereby making it unsuitable for being lifted by a single person.. Even in the case of two or mare persons lifting the trolley and. attendant apparatus it is difficult, to negotiate stairs leading to cellars or other places which are difficult to access. The present invention is derived from the realisation that there is a need for an apparatus and a method that addresses this problem in a more user friendly way but whch shil allows for the ability: to dry rooms in a manner as: generally described with reference: to GB2488.873B but in a more user friendly way.
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided portable electric airflow control apparatus. for drying a rocm, the apparatus comprising or including a houshig adapted to be pneumatically connectable to a portable heater! the housing having a room air inlet port and a room air outlet port; an ambient ir inlet port and associated fan means for drawing in air from Outside the room into the housing via, a duct; a room air exhaust port and, associated: fan connectable to an exhaust duct to exhaust re-circulated air to the outside of the 10' room; control meafls' for monitoring air temperature and humidity when air being reP-circulated within the room to sequentially exhaust recirculated air from the room after a pre-selected parameter has been reached, and switch means associated with the outside air inlet port to draw fri air from outside the room in response to signals from the' control means after the recirculated air has been exhausted from the room or as it is being exhausted ftcnii the room.
Preferably, the apparatus is provided with means to deliver p.reset air temperature within the room, with or without the separately connectable portable heater, for the latter where there is sufficient heat withhi the room to provide a source of heated air for the apparatus, such as from a central heating system.
By the apparatus being able to dehver a p-sot air temperature to all or particular parts of a room. such as by the use of duc.ting, this ensures that excessively hih temperatures are avoided, there' by avoiding possible secondary damage to the room.
Conveniently, the fan means includes cne or more tangentiaMlow blower fans and associated air control baffles by \hich. the source of: air being drawn into the, or each blower fan can be selected, such, as air being re-circulated within the, room or ambient ir from outside of the room. In a preferred embodiment of this.coricept.a. pair of such blower fans are each used to draw air S from separate inlet ports, the tarts having hinged outlet shutters closable by grvUy and openable under air pressure such that, by selecting one or other of the pair of blower fans to operate at any given time air is prevented from escaping via the de.-energsed fan because of the presence of' the closed shutters.
In an alternative embodiment a sin9'Ie fan i.s used in conjunction with motor driven. shutters, each such shutter being selecthely closed or opened as reqthred conveniently the apparatus also includes an axial-flow fan connectable to ducting for firecti.ng air to parts of a room being dried or for exhausting 15. previously re-circulated air to outside the room, such as to other parts of the building or to outside air.
Conveniently, the housing for the electric airflow control apparatus includes a handle by which it may be carried to a target area within a building, with the associated portable heater, if required, al.o having a handle for the same purpose. Preferably, both the housing and the heater have interlocking formations by which, in use, they effectively form a single unit to which variOus arrangements of ducting can be temporarily attached, depending upon the particular requirements for the drying process.
Since the drying process for the or each room may vary, depending upon such things as the level of dampness in the flocrs and walls, the availabll.ity cf a separate heat source, such as from central heating, and the volume, of the space being dried, the apparatus preferably includes means fo.r remotely gathering data,. such as. by means of a radio frequency (RF) remote Hnk, whereby the dryIng process can be actively monit red and the apparatus adjusted or deactiveted remotely to obviate the need for an operator of the apparatus to be constantly in attendance during the drying process, which may take several days, According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided a combinatio.n portable electric irflow contro apparatus n accordance with the first aspect of the invention and a modular portable heater adapted to be removably connectable to the airflow control apparatus to selectively heat air as it circulates Within a room being dried. With this arrangement the modular heater can he, if required removably mounted eg on top of the air control apparatus immediately adjacent the or each air re-circulating fan where there is no or insufficient heating within the room itsi, In a refinement to this concept the heater may also be connectable to a detachable flexible duct for directing heated air to particular parts of the room being dried.
The invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying dra4ngs in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of portable electric airflow control apparatus according to the invention, and Figure 2 is a perspective view of a combination of the apparatus of Figure I connected to. a portable electric heater and associatEd ductirg.
Referring firstly to Figure 1 a.n electrically operable portable airflow control apparatus for drying a room in accordance with the first aspect of the invention is shown generally at I and comprises a housing 2 and asscciated carrying handle 3. Within. ti. housing 2 adjacent the handle 3 is a duct 4 and associated 5.axial$low air iriet and air outlet fan 5 by whic h aft may be sucked into and blown out of the duct 4 in the direction shown arrowS. At the, other end of the housing 2 are a pair of' oppositely disposed inlet ducts 6 (only one of which is shown) and associated. tangentiakiow blower fans 7 by which aft may be drawn into the ducts 6. axially inwarily in the direction arrowS to thereafter be. blown IC' tangentiafly outwardly v'ia tangnhial outlet ducts 8 through respective closeable shutters. 9, one of which is shown closed and the other open, therefore permitting air to flow towards the handle end of' the housing 2 in the direction shown arrowed, Formed within the upper surface of the housing 2 are recesses 1.0 for receMng correspondingly shaped locking projections (not, shown) of a modular heater unit 11 as shown in Figure 2. An assortment of flexible ducts 12 can be connected as required to the ducts 4 and 6; and for monitoring opertion of the apparatus I remotely a radio frequency ($F) transmitter/receiver 13 is provided.
In operation each respective blower fan 7 is operated sequentially such that as one such fan 7 remans doactwated ts respective shutters 9 remain closed and as the other such. fan 7 is activated air is. drawn into it from an axial direction relative to its respective flexible dueling 12 to thereafter be expelled tangentially towards the handle end of the housing 2. Hence, using the method of operation described generally with. regard. to GB2488873B, a room within which the apparatus 1 has been placed is sealed and, if there is akeady sufficient heat within the. room, such as from central heating, air is recjrculated within the room untU a given parameter has been reached whereafte.r air within the room can be exhausted from it by means of the axial ten and associated.
ductng 1.2 while ambient fresh air is drawn into the room via one of the blower tans 7. Following d&aclivaUon. of that fan after sufficient fresh air has been diawn into the room the other blower fan can be used to re-circulate the flesh air within the room untd it ieaches the desired parameter, the process being repeated until sensors indicate that the morn is. sufficiently dry, at which point the apparatus may automatically cut out and send a signal via the RF transmitter to a iemote operator of the machine to indicate completion of the drying process During the drying process itself the RF transmitter may also provide data to the operator indicating progress of the drying process In the embodiment shown in Eiguri. 2 the modular heater unit 11. is shown 15. removably mounted on the housing 2 of the air control apparatus I thereby together providing a combination portable apparatus in accordance with the second aspect of the invention in circumstances where there is no other heating available. In this configuration, the Inlet end ha of the heater unit 11 abuts the.
outlet duct 8 so that there is a pneumatic connection thorebetween and the outlet end ii b therelore allows heated air into the room being dried, the air entertn.g the heater 11. from one or other of the vents B in response to activation of a respective blower fan 7 The heater unit 11 is aiso provided with a handle 14 for ease of transportation, thereby alleviating the previous, problem cf the apparatus described in 082488873B and its attendant weight. As a further refinement the exit end ii b of the I eater unit. ii can also be fitted with an elaticated correspondingly shaped funneL 15 itself connectaWe to one of the fledbte ducts 12 whereby heat from the heater unit 11 can be di.recte.d to specific parts of the room being dried.
From the foregoing it wiB be seen that the use of one or more tangential-flow blower fans in conjunction with an axiakflow fan wtthin the same housing 2 provides a particularly compact arrangement permitting the heater unit 11, if required, to be separately carried and, without the weight of the he for unit 11 the air control apparatus I is itself relativ&y lightweight and can be easily transported without the need for being mounted on a wheeled: trolley. In addition, the reaUsation that in some circumstances, heating of the air within a room to be dried wUl not require an additional heat source such as the modular electrU heater ii, such as where gas or oH central heating is available, thereby reduces electric power consumption over what could be a relatively long period of several days while the room is dried to a sufficient level.
