Abstract

252,379. Crabb, C. L. May 19, 1926. Pug-mills.- A machine for separating stones, roots, and other foreign substances from clay comprises means for shaving from the mass of clay cuttings which are thinner than the foreign sub. stances and simultaneously clearing the cutting edge. As shown in Fig. 1, the machine comprises a number of cutters 16 of diminishing size and spaced at the required distance between end plates 14, 15. The spacing means consists of set screws 31 passing through tapped lugs on the cutters and bearing against lugs on the adjacent cutters. The cutting edge is formed by a cylindrical face 22 and a conical face 23 and the rear side of each cutter is formed with stepped bearings 25 which co-act with stepped lugs 26<1> on the front side of the next cutter to maintain alignment of the cutters. The end plates 14, 15 are provided with flanges 27, 28 formed as the rear and front side of a cutter respectively. The clay is forced through the machine by the means discharging it from a pug-mill 10 or hopper and the cleaned clay is discharged by a hopper 41, the debris passing out at 39. Tools 33 carried by a rotating shaft 32 keep the cutting edges clear of the stones &c.
