Abstract

A hand held dental illuminating device 1 includes a light source 6 fixed at the tip of a probe like structure 3 and orientated to radiate predominantly perpendicular or near perpendicular to the probe handle 2. The handle part 2 includes a switch 7 and contains a battery 8 to power the light source. The light source 6 is preferably an LED linked to voltage controller 9 which is controlled by the switch 7. The wires 10 connect the light source 6 to the power provided by the battery 8. There is also an optional sealable end 11 which allows access to the battery 8.

Description

Dental illuminating device This invention relates to an oral inspection device and more particularly to a dental illuminating device.
Dental hygiene by way of regular brushing of the teeth and flossing of the spaces between them is generally considered gQod practice in order to reduce the risk of tooth decay and other oral health problems. As well as brushing and flossing it is important to visually check teeth for signs of insufficient cleaning, tooth decay and tooth damage.
However, a visual inspection of the teeth is limited to the areas of the teeth that are in line of sight, whilst the areas of the teeth that are the most susceptible to decay, the point where adjacent teeth touch together, are often hidden and not visually obvious. For this reason, tooth decay or damage can go unnoticed and can lead to further problems if left untreated.
To overcome these problems, the present invention proposes a hand held implement incorporating a switchable tight source and means to supply electricity to said light source where the shape of the implement is such as to allow the user to hold the implement and position the directional light beam in the mouth in order to back light the tooth or teeth to be inspected. The translucent nature of teeth allows the tooth or teeth to be illuminated wherein areas of decay and damage and evidence of insufficient cleaning become visually apparent.
The invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figures 1 and 1 A show a dental illuminating device in perspective Figure 2 shows a dental illuminating device in section In figure 1 and IA, a dental illuminating device 1 comprises a handle portion 2 and a probe portion 3 and a head portion 4 and a windowS, wherö the window 5 is made from a non toxic and transparent or semi transparent material and is orientated to view perpendicular to or near perpendicular to the axis of the handle 2. The handle 2 and the probe 3 and the head 4 and the window 5 are preferably fabricated from a non toxic thermoplastic type material using common moulding techniques, with any connections between the parts being made so as to be waterproof and hygienic.
Located on the handle portion 2 may be an electrical switch 7 FIG 2 shows a schematic section view in which a light emitting diode (LED) 6 is secured inside the head 4 and is orientated to emit light through the window 5. The light emithrig diode 6 is powered by electrical energy from a battery 8 via a voltage controller 9 and switch 7 that are housed within the handle 2. The electrical energy being conducted by wires 10 within the structure. Provided at the handle for the purpose of servicing the battery 8 is a removable and resealable panel 11.
