Description

Title: A bucket insert, combination including a bucket insert, and a method Descriijtion of Invention Embodiments of the present invention relate to a combination of an insert for a bucket and a bucket. In particular, embodiments of the present invention relate to volume reducing inserts for use with a bucket, and methods of their use.
Conventionally, a bucket and wringer combination is provided to allow a user to mop a surface such as a floor. The wringer is removably mounted with respect to the bucket such that a cleaning liquid which is wrung from mop material (of a mop) in the wringer will fall into the bucket for collection. The bucket defines a volume for containing that cleaning liquid and also for allowing mop material to be rinsed in the liquid within the bucket.
Various different mop materials are conventionally used with such wringer and bucket combinations. The mop material may be selected in dependence on the type of surface to be cleaned.
It is relatively common for a wringer and bucket combination to be selected for use with a first mop material and then, at some later date, the same wringer and bucket combination are used with a second mop material which is different from the first mop material. In addition, it is also relatively common for different types of wringer to be interchangeably fitted to the same bucket.
Different mop materials and different cleaning techniques require the use of, for example, different wringers and different amounts and types of cleaning liquid. The cleaning liquid is normally water to which one or more cleaning chemicals may have been added.
The use of micro-fibre mop material is becoming more common. Micro-fibre mop material typically requires less water than some other conventional types of mop material. In addition, there have been significant recent developments in the mechanisms which are used to clean the mop material during the mopping process. For example, an important advance was made in the development of a system for brushing mop material to help to clean the mop material. Such a system is disclosed in W0201 1148155, for example.
These developments have had an impact on the amount of cleaning liquid which is required to during the mopping process.
A first wringer and bucket combination may, therefore, require the bucket to hold far more cleaning liquid than is needed by a second wringer and bucket combination -even if the buckets are the same. Similarly, a first mop material may require a bucket holding more cleaning liquid than is needed for a second mop material.
This wastes the cleaning liquid and makes the bucket heavier than necessary.
A heavier bucket is more awkward to manoeuvre and can be difficult to empty (particularly when the user must lift the bucket in order to pour the contents of the bucket into a sink or raised drain).
There is, therefore, a need to ameliorate one or more problems associated
with the prior art.
Accordingly, an aspect of the present invention provides a combination of a bucket insert and a bucket, the bucket including at least one side wall and a base wall, the at least one side wall and the base wall defining an internal volume of the bucket having an operable part for receiving cleaning liquid, the bucket insert comprising: at least one insert side wall; and an insert base wall coupled to the at least one insert side wall, bucket insert defining an insert volume for receiving cleaning liquid, wherein the at least one insert side wall conforms with the at least one side wall of the bucket around a substantial part of the at least one side wall of the bucket, and the insert volume is less than the internal volume of the bucket such that the bucket insert is configured to be received by the internal volume of the bucket to provide a reduced operable part of the internal volume of the bucket.
The bucket insert may further include an insert cup extending from the insert base wall and away from an insert rim of the at least one insert side wall.
The insert cup may be integrally formed with the rest of the bucket insert.
The bucket insert may further include a cuff configured to attachment to the insert cup.
The insert base wall may be an inclined insert base wall forming a shelf.
The at least one insert side wall may include a part or a wall which is outwardly flared.
The bucket insert may further include an insert handle coupled to the bucket insert.
The bucket may be configured to receive the bucket insert such that the bucket insert is at least partially supported by the base wall of the bucket and the at least one insert side wall may conform to an adjacent part of the at least one side wall of the bucket.
The combination may further include a wringer or mop material cleaning apparatus configured to be coupled to the bucket with the bucket insert received by the bucket.
The bucket insert may be configured to support at least part of the wringer or mop material cleaning apparatus.
The wringer or mop material cleaning apparatus may be coupled to the bucket such that the insert volume is accessible through a tree part of an open top of the bucket.
The combination may further include a mop including mop material, wherein the bucket insert is configured to receive the mop material.
The at least one insert side wall may conform with the at least one side wall of the bucket around a substantial part of the at least one side wall of the bucket at a height between a bucket rim and the base wall of the bucket.
Another aspect provides a bucket insert for use in a combination.
Another aspect provides a method including: providing a combination; and supplying cleaning liquid to the insert volume of the bucket insert.
The method may further include wetting mop material with the cleaning liquid in the insert volume of the insert bucket.
Embodiments of the present invention that are described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a side view of a bucket insert of embodiments; Figure 2 shows a plan view of a bucket insert of embodiments; Figure 3 shows an end view of a bucket insert of embodiments; Figure 4 shows a cross-sectional side view of a bucket and insert of embodiments; Figure 5 shows a side view of a bucket with a wringer and bucket insert of embodiments (internal features being shown in phantom); Figure 6 shows a mop of embodiments; Figure 7 shows a perspective view of a bucket and bucket insert of embodiments, with the bucket partially transparent; and Figure 8 shows a perspective view of a bucker insert.
With reference to figures 1 to 5, 7 and 8, some embodiments of the present invention include a bucket insert 1. The bucket insert 1 is configured for use with a bucket 2 and it is shaped and sized to be received within a volume 21 defined by the bucket 2.
The bucket 2 includes a base wall 22 and at least one side wall 23 which together define the internal volume 21 of the bucket 2. The internal volume 21 is accessible through an open top 24 of the bucket 2. The open top 24 is defined by a bucket rim 25 which is located at an end of the at least one side wall 23 which is remote from the base wall 22. The bucket rim 25 may be formed by an outward curl or bend of the at least one side wall 23.
The bucket 2 is configured to be coupled to a wringer 3 such that the wringer 3 is located above at least part of the internal volume 21 of the bucket 2. In some embodiments, the wringer 3 is at least partially received by the internal volume 21 of the bucket 2. In some embodiments, the wringer 3 is at least partially supported by the bucket rim 25 or a part of the bucket rim 25. In some embodiments, the bucket 2 and wringer 3 are configured such that, when coupled together, the wringer 3 is located substantially above a deepest part of the internal volume 21 defined by the bucket 2.
In embodiments, the wringer 3, when coupled to the bucket 2, covers only part of the open top 24 of the bucket 2 such that the internal volume 21 is still accessible through the free part of the open top 24 (the free part being defined by the bucket 2 and wringer 3).
The bucket 2 may include an outwardly and upwardly flared side wall 231 of the at least one side wall 23 or an outwardly and upwardly flared part 231 of the at least one side wall 23. This flared sidewall or part 231 may provide a larger open top 24 and is, in some embodiments, provided to form a larger free part of the open top 24 once a wringer 3 has been coupled to the bucket 2.
Access to the internal volume 21 of the bucket 2 is, therefore, improved by the flared side wall or part 231 when the wringer 3 is coupled to the bucket 2.
Thus, at least part of the internal volume 21 of the bucket 2 may be filled with cleaning liquid 4 and the wringer 3 may be coupled to the bucket 2. A user may then insert mop material 51 of a mop 5 (see figure 6) into the cleaning liquid 4 in the internal volume 21 through the free part of the open top 24. The mop material 51 is rinsed in the cleaning liquid 4. The user may then use the wringer 3 to wring the mop material 51 and excess cleaning liquid which is wrung from the mop material 51 may be delivered from the wringer 3 back to the internal volume 21. The user may then use the mop 5 to clean at least part of a surface (such as a floor) and the process may then be repeated.
If, for example, a new wringer 3 is to be fitted to the bucket 2 (wherein the new wringer 3 reduces the required amount of cleaning liquid 4, for example, because it includes a mop material cleaning apparatus) or a new mop material 51 is used which does not need so much cleaning liquid 4 then the bucket 2 may need to be filled with more cleaning liquid 4 than is otherwise required in order to ensure that the liquid is deep enough to allow adequate rinsing or wetting of the mop material 51.
The new wringer 3 may, for example, include one or more brushes which are configured to act on the mop material 51 in order to clean the mop material.
The new wringer 3 may be designed such that the mop material 51 is rinsed and/or wet (or re-wet) as the mop material 51 is moved through the brushes or after the mop material 51 has moved through the brushes (but before it is retracted from the new wringer 3). This may require a minimum depth of cleaning liquid 4 in the bucket 2 to ensure that the mop material reaches the cleaning liquid 4 for rinsing/wetting (or re-wetting).
Some embodiments of the present invention, therefore, include the bucket insert 1 which is configured to be received within the internal volume 21 of the bucket 2. The bucket insert 1 is configured to define an insert volume 11 which is less than the internal volume 21 of the bucket 2 and is also less than the part of the internal volume 21 of bucket 2 which the bucket insert 1 occupies when received by the bucket 2. The bucket 2 has an operable part of the internal volume 21 which is the part which is configured to receive cleaning liquid 4 in normal use. With the bucket insert 1 received by the bucket 1, the bucket insert 2 provides a reduced operable internal volume -i.e. at least a part of the insert volume 11 (which is less than the corresponding part of the internal volume 21 of the bucket 2).
The bucket insert 1 includes a main body 12 formed from: at least one insert side wall 13 and an insert base wall 14. Some embodiments may further include an insert cup 15.
The at least one insert side wall 13 is configured such that it conforms to a part of the at least one side wall 23 of the bucket 2 such that when the bucket insert 1 is received by the bucket 2, the at least one insert side wall 13 rests against the at least one side wall 23 of the bucket 2. In some embodiments, the at least one side wall 13 includes one or more inclined portions 133 which conform with one or more corresponding portions of the bucket 2. In some embodiments, the conformity is around substantially an entire outer perimeter of the insert 1 such that, when received by the bucket 2, substantially the entire outer perimeter of the bucket insert 1 is positioned against the at least one side wall 23 of the bucket 2. In effect, therefore, the bucket insert 1 forms a new lower part of the bucket 2 when so received.
The at least one insert side wall 13 may include parts or walls which extend generally vertically (i.e. towards the bucket rim 25 when received by the bucket 2). The at least one insert side wall 13 may include a part or wall which generally conforms with the flared wall or part 231 of the least one side wall 23 of the bucket 2 which may be provided in some embodiments. Accordingly, a wall or part of a wall of the at least one insert side wall 13 is an outwardly and upwardly flared side wall or part 132.
The flared insert side wall or part 132 is inclined with respect to the insert base wall 14.
The insert base wall 14 may, itself, be inclined with respect to a horizontal axis when the bucket insert 1 is received by the bucket 2. The insert base wall 14 may, therefore, be inclined with respect to the base wall 22 of the bucket 2 when the bucket insert 1 is received by the bucket 2. The insert base wall 14 may be so inclined to a lesser extent than the flared insert side wall or part 132 of the at least one insert side wall 13.
The insert base wall 14, therefore, may form a downwardly extending slope from a lower edge of the at least one insert side wall 13 (which may be the flared insert wall or part 132) towards the insert cup 15.
As will be appreciated, therefore, the insert base wall 14 may form an internal shelf (which may be an inclined shelf) of the bucket insert 1. The shelf extends from the at least one insert side wall 13 to the insert cup 15.
The insert cup 15 extends in a direction which is generally away from an insert rim 16 (which may define an edge of the at least one insert side wall 13 remote from the insert base wall 14).
The insert cup 15 defines an insert cup volume which is part of the insert volume 11. The insert cup 15 is configured to hold cleaning liquid 4. When the bucket insert 1 is received by a bucket 2, the insert cup 15 has a generally open upper end and a closed lower end. The generally open upper end is located adjacent at least part of the insert base wall 14. The generally open upper end of the insert cup 15 is configured to receive mop material 51. In particular, the open upper end of the insert cup 15 may be configured to receive at least part of a piece of flat mop material 51 which may be micro-fibre mop material and the part which is received may be a folded part of the micro-fibre mop material.
As such, the insert cup 15 and/or the open upper end of the insert cup 15 may be generally rectangular in cross-sectional shape. The insert cup 15 may be oriented such that the longest dimension of its open upper end is generally aligned with a width of the bucket 2 (when fitted). The insert cup 15 is generally offset from a centre of the bucket insert 1 towards one side or end thereof. The insert base wall 14 may, therefore, extend from a single side of the open upper end of the insert cup 15.
The insert cup 15 may extend from the open upper end to a depth such that, in use, substantially all of an operative part of the mop material 51 can be received by the insert cup volume.
In some embodiments, the insert cup 15 is a separate piece to at least another part of the bucket insert 1. As such, the insert cup 15 may be attached to another part of the bucket insert 1. This attachment may be via an insert cup cuff 17 of the bucket insert 1. The insert cup cuff 17 may be located generally adjacent the insert base wall 14 and may extend away therefrom (generally in the direction in which the insert cup 15 is to extend). The insert cup cuff 17 is shaped and sized to receive at least part of the insert cup 15 or to be received by at least part of the insert cup 15. The insert cup 15 and insert cup cuff 17 may be secured together by an attachment arrangement which may include an adhesive, a weld, one or more screws, one or more nuts and bolts, one or more clips.
The bucket insert 1 is generally configured with respect to the bucket 2 such that when the bucket insert 1 is received by the bucket 2, a lowermost part of the bucket insert 1 (which may be the insert cup 15) rests on the base wall 22 of the bucket 2 and the at least one insert side wall 14 conforms to the at least one side wall 23 of the bucket 2 at that location.
The bucket insert 1, therefore, is configured to form a new lower part of the bucket 2 and separates the insert volume 11 from an unused part of the internal volume 21 of the bucket 2.
The at least one insert side wall 13 is shaped and sized to permit the wringer 3 or new wringer 3 to be secured to the bucket 2 in the normal manner.
In some embodiments, the bucket insert 1 is shaped and sized such that a lower part of the wringer 3 or new wringer 3 is receivable within a part of the insert volume 11. Accordingly, with the bucket insert 1 received by the bucket 2, the insert side wall 13 may be above a lower part of the wringer or new wringer 3 also received by the bucket 2. In such embodiments, there is a reduced risk of the overspill of cleaning liquid 4 into a volume between the bucket insert 1 and bucket 2. In some of these embodiments, the bucket insert 1 may be configured to support a part of the wringer 3 or new wringer 3 -the bucket insert 1 may, therefore, include a shelf which extends inwardly from the insert side wall 13 and on which the wringer 3 or new wringer 3 may be at least partially supported.
In other embodiments, the wringer 3 or new wringer 3 may be located above the bucket insert 1 when both are received by the bucket 2.
The bucket insert 1 may include an insert handle 18 which is configured to allow a user to lift the bucket insert 1 from within the bucket 2. The insert handle 18 may be pivotally mounted with respect to the main body 12 of the bucketinserti.
The insert handle 18 may be located such that the bucket insert 1 remains substantially level when lifted by the handle (even if the insert cup 15 contains cleaning liquid 4). As such, the insert handle 18 may be attached to the bucket insert 1 generally above the insert cup 15 or otherwise close thereto).
The bucket insert 1 may include one or more ribs in the at least one insert side wall 13 and/or the insert base wall 14 to increase the rigidity of the bucket insert 2. The one or more ribs may include at least on vertical and/or at least on horizontal rib.
The bucket insert 1 may include one or more clips or mounting points for clips which are configured for use in clipping the bucket insert 1 to the bucket 2.
The bucket insert 1 may include a support structure for supporting at least part of the wringer 3 or new wringer 3. The support structure may be part of the insert rim 16 (e.g. may be an inwardly or outwardly curled or rolled wall at the insert rim 16). The bucket insert 1 may be configured to permit the wringer 3 or new wringer 3 to be coupled to the bucket 2 -e.g. one or more recesses may be provided in the at least one insert side wall 13 to receive one or more respective parts of the wringer 3 or new wringer 3.
In embodiments, the insert handle 18 includes a n-shaped handle which is pivotally mounted to the main body 12 of the bucket insert 1 in two opposing side wall recesses 19 which extend along a wall of the at least one insert wall 13 (the recesses 19 extending generally inwardly and being substantially vertical).
In use, therefore, cleaning liquid 4 is delivered or otherwise supplied to the bucket insert 1. In embodiments, the insert cup 15 is at least partially filled with cleaning liquid 4 and in embodiments only the insert cup 15 is at least partially filled with cleaning liquid 4. In embodiments, the level of the cleaning liquid 4 in the bucket insert 1 is at or below a lower edge of the at least one insert side wall 13 -a cleaning liquid 4 level is shown in the figures by a dashed and dotted line. In embodiments, the level of the cleaning liquid 4 is below an edge of the insert base wall 14 adjacent the insert cup 15 (in some embodiments, the cleaning liquid 4 may be above this level). The bucket insert 1 may be then lowered into a bucket 2 such that it is received by the bucket 2 and, in particular, by the internal volume 21 defined by the bucket 2.
The wringer 3 or new wringer 3 may be then coupled to the bucket 2 and/or the bucket insert 1.
The location of the insert cup 15 in such a configuration may be such that mop material 51 can be lowered through the wringer 3 or new wringer 3 and into the cleaning liquid 4 therein.
With the bucket insert 1 received by the bucket 2 and the wringer 3 or new wringer 3 coupled to the bucket 2, the insert cup 15 may be generally aligned with the wringer 3 or new wringer 3.
In embodiments, the mop material 51 can also be lowered into the cleaning liquid 4 in the insert cup 15 through the free part of the open top 24 of the bucket 2 (and the bucket insert 1, bucket 2, and wringer 3 are configured to permit such access).
In embodiments, the cleaning liquid 4 may also partly be contained within the main body 12 (i.e. the volume of cleaning liquid 4 is greater than the volume defined by the insert cup 15). In such embodiments, the mop material 51 can also be lowered into the cleaning liquid 4 in the main body 12 through the free part of the open top 24 of the bucket 2 (and the bucket insert 1, bucket 2, and wringer 3 are configured to permit such access).
In embodiments, the insert cup 15 in such a configuration is positioned such that the material (e.g. dirt) and liquid which is brushed from the mop material 51, e.g. by a new wringer 3 which includes one or more brushes, (or is otherwise released from the mop material 51 into the insert cup 15) is delivered to the cleaning liquid 4 in the insert cup 15. In other words, the insert cup 15 may be configured to be positioned generally beneath the wringer or new wringer 3. The material (e.g. dirt) will tend to fall (under gravity) through the cleaning liquid 4 in the insert cup 15 towards the closed lower end thereof.
As will be understood, material (e.g. dirt) which collects in the insert cup 15 is less likely, in some embodiments, to be stirred up by agitation of the cleaning liquid 4 (because of the limited freedom of movement of the cleaning liquid 4 within the insert cup 15-particularly, in some embodiments having a tapered insert cup 15, towards a narrower closed lower end thereof -and the depth of the insert cup 15. This negates or eliminates the need for a grid or other structure to separate the part of the cleaning liquid 4 in which material (e.g. dirt) is collected from the rest of the cleaning liquid 4 -as is may be found in prior arrangements. The depth of the insert cup 15 may be greater than the length of the mop material 15 which is receivable within the insert cup 15 -such that a distal end of the mop material 15 is less likely to contact the collected material (e.g. dirt).
The inclined insert base wall 14 is configured, in some embodiments, to allow material (e.g. dirt from mop material 51 which is placed on the inclined base wall 14 or which is received in cleaning liquid 4 within the main body 12) to move into the insert cup 15 down the insert base wall 14 -in which the material (e.g. dirt) may collect in towards the closed lower end thereof. The movement may be aided by a flow of cleaning liquid 4, under gravity, from the main body 12 into the insert cup 15 (e.g. from the mop material 51).
In embodiments, the insert base wall 14 is provided with one or more ribs or protrusions extending therefrom.
In embodiments, the insert cup 15 is integrally formed with the main body 12 of the insert 1.
After use, a user may lift the bucket insert 1 from the bucket 2 (using the insert handle 18, if provided). The volume of liquid in the bucket insert 1 is less than would otherwise be in the bucket 2 and so this lifting task may be greatly eased. This may also make it easier for a user to tip the used liquid into a raised drain or sink.
The bucket insert 1 can be retrofitted to the bucket 2 to allow a lower volume of cleaning liquid 4 to be used -e.g. because of the use of a new wringer 3 and/or a new mop material 51.
As used herein, references to a wringer 3 or new wringer 3 may include references to a mop material cleaning apparatus which may or may not include a wringer in a conventional sense. Such a cleaning mechanism may include, for example, one or more brushes which are configured to act on mop material 51 positioned within the cleaning apparatus to clean the mop material.
In some embodiments, the bucket insert 1 is formed from plastic. In some embodiments, the insert handle 18 is formed of metal (such as steel).
According to embodiments, the bucket insert 1 is a removable bucket insert 1 in that it can be coupled to a bucket 2 and then removed from the bucket 1 without substantive damage to the bucket 2 or the bucket insert 1.
When used in this specification and claims, the terms "comprises" and "comprising" and variations thereof mean that the specified features, steps or integers are included. The terms are not to be interpreted to exclude the presence of other features, steps or components.
The features disclosed in the foregoing description, or the following claims, or the accompanying drawings, expressed in their specific forms or in terms of a means for performing the disclosed function, or a method or process for attaining the disclosed result, as appropriate, may, separately, or in any combination of such features, be utilised for realising the invention in diverse forms thereof.
