Abstract

252,168. Naamlooze Vennootschap Philips' Gloeilampenfabrieken. May 15,1925, [Convention date]. Soldering. - In an automatic soldering machine, solder wire is periodically moved towards and away from the work. being heated while moving towards the work. Soldering of the leading in wires to the caps of electric incandescent lamps to be screwed into or fixed by bayonet slots in their holders may thus be effected. A number of screw cap lamps may be mounted in bushings 41 in a rotatable table 40 and the leading in wires soldered respectively at 37, Fig. 1 and 49, Fig. 4, at successive stations. For soldering at the point 37, solder wire 4 supplied from a drum 7 is clamped with its end projecting from a bush 31, by rolls 12, 13 mounted on a lever 8, which is oscillated about its pivot 10 by a rod 11. The roll 12 is carried by a plate 15 pivoted at 19 on the lever 8 and is pressed against the roll 13 by a spring 26 on a set screw 30. The rolls are normally locked in position by pawls 20, 21, of which the pawl 21 is carried by a plate 16 pivoted on the axis 18 of the roll 13 and normally pulled by a spring 27 against a stop 29. When the lever 8 is raised the solder wire is carried back therewith until the end 24 of the plate 16 engages stop 25, whereupon the plate 16 is oscillated to rotate the roll 13 and so, through gearing 23, 22, the roll 12, to feed the wire through the bush 31. The lever 8 then moves down to convey the solder to the work. A burner 5 movable on a pivot 32 is provided with a rod 33 which passes with play through stops 35, 36 on the lever 8. When the lever 8 moves down the stop 35 engages the rod and the flame is thus directed continuously on the same part of the solder, which is melted by the time it reaches the work. When the lever 8 is raised, the flame remains for a short period projected on the work so as to prevent too sudden cooling of the solder and the burner is then raised by the stop 36 along with the lever 8. The mechanism for feeding the solder to the soldering point 49, Fig. 4, is of similar construction, but the lever 46 carrying the rolls 43, 44 is pivoted at 45. Stops on the lever engage a rod projecting from a burner which is movable on a vertical pivot. The work in either case may be previously heated.
