These embodiments are described in sufficient detail to enable those skilled ill the art to practice them, and it is to be ufiderstood that other embodiments may be utilized and that structural, logical, and electrical changes may be made without departing from the scope of the inventive subject matter. Such embodiments of the inventive subject matter may be referred to, individually and/or collectively, herein by the term "invention" merely for convenience and without intending to voluntarily limit the scope of this application to any single invention or inventive concept if more than one is in fact disclosed.
[9016] The following description is, therefore, not to he taken in a limited sense, and the scope of the inventive subject matter is defined by the appended claims.
[9017] In the following embodiments, like components are labelled with like reference numerals.
[9018] The functions or algorithms described herein are implemented in hardware, software or a combination of software and hardware in one embodiment.
The software comprises computer executable instructions stored on computer readable media such as memory or other type of storage devices. Further, described functions may correspond to modules, which may be software, hardware, firmware, or any combination thereof. Multiple functions are performed in one or more modules as desired, and the embodiments described are merely examples. The software is executed on a digital signal processor, ASIC, microprocessor, or other type of processor operating on a system, such as a personal computer, server, a router, or other device capable of processing data including network interconnection devices.
[9019] Some embodiments implement the functions in two or more specific interconnected hardware modules or devices with related control and data signals communicated between and through the modules, or as portions of an application-specific integrated circuit. Thus, the exemplary process flow is applicable to software, firmware, and hardware implementations.
[9029] Embodiments of the invention relate to the efficient use of display space when providing a user interface to allow users to catalogue or organize data items. This is particularly advantageous when the display size is limited such as on handheld devices e.g. smart phones, tablet computers and portable digital multimedia players. A user can select to catalogLie a data item in an organized and
S
managed data structure by selecting and moving an icon or button across the display in the same display area as the content of and/or information on the data item is displayed. Tn the display area, catalogue indicators are displayed overlaid on the displayed content and/information to allow a user to move the icon or bLitton to the catalogue indicators to catalogue the data item in a catalogue location associated with a selected catalogue indicator. The movement and selection operation can be implemented using a drag and drop operation and the user interface can conveniently be provided as a touch screen, as commonly provided in small user portable devices such as smart phones, tablet computers, and digital multimedia players. The invention is however applicable to large screen devices and computers in general.
[0021] The digital items can comprise any digital data the content of which or information on which can be displayed to a user, such as video, audio, documents, presentations, and spreadsheets. The display can display only a part of the data item or all of it. A part of a data item can comprise a separately displayable component such as a frame of a video, a page of a document, a slide of a presentation, or a sheet of a spreadsheet.
[0022] The catalogue can comprise a structure which can be used to organize the data items for ease of identification and location by the user. in one embodiment the cataloguing operation does not move the storage location of the data item in the memory or change the location of data item as recognized and controlled by an operating system of the processing device, instead, the catalogue simple keeps separate location information for the data items organized according to the structure.
[0023] The user input to the apparatus and method can be provided using any type of user input device that enables the movement of an icon or button across a display, such as a point device e.g. a mouse, tracker ball or track pad, a touch screen, or a gesture input device.
[0024] An embodiment will now he described with reference to figure I, which is a schematic diagram illustrating apparatus for cataloguing data items.
[90251 A device 1 includes a digital video camera for capturing video and an audio input device 70 for capturing audio. The outputs of the digital video camera and the audio input device 70 are input to a processor 20. The processor implements program code such as a user interface module 2! to implement the user interface on the user interface device 40, and a data cataloguing module 22 to implement the data cataloguing process to store a catalogue structure identifying stored video and audio items. A memory 30 is provided for access by the processor to store program code therein to control the processor and to store video and audio data items as they are captured, such as the captured video from the digital video camera 10 and the audio input device 70. The memory can comprise transient memory for use by the processor during its operation e.g. Random Access Memory.
A user interface device 40 is provided which includes a display and a user input device. The display and user interface device can be provided in combination by a touch screen for example. A data store 60 is provided for the longer-term storage of the data items and the catalogue structure. The data store 60 can comprise solid-state memory, or a hard disk drive for example. A program code store 65 is provided for the longer-term storage of the program code. The data store 60 can comprise solid-state memory e.g. EEPROM, or a hard disk drive for example. A iletwork interface is provided to connect the device 1 to the interilet 80 to allow the device to connect to a server 90 to access a database 100. This enables a user to upload and retrieve audio and video items in the database using a service hosted by the server 90. The service hosted by the server 90 can enable a user to set up a catalogue structure with catalogue indicators having icon images and description labels, which can be displayed to the user to facilitate cataloguing of the audio and video items.
The catalogue structure can be copied across the internet 80 to be stored in the data store 60. In this way, a user can store their audio and video items and catalogue them locally or remotely for local or remote access. The remote access capability enables the user to share the uploaded and catalogues audio and video items with other users.
[90261 The device of figure 1 can be used for cataloguing any data items, not just audio and video items. The processor 20 can implement applications for the display of the content of or information on any data item such as a spreadsheet, document, presentation, image, video, or audio. Program code for the applications is stored in the program code store 65.
[9027] Figure 2 is a flow diagram illustrating a process for cataloguing data items such as audio and video.
[9028] A data item such as a data file is displayed in step Si. The content of the data item or information on the data item can be displayed. The information on the data item can for example comprise meta data such as file name, file size, file type, compression type, and date and time. The data item may be too big to be displayed on the display or may comprise multiple parts. Such multiple parts can comprise multiple separately viewable components such as document pages, spreadsheet sheets, presentation slides, and video frames. For a video, the display will show a frame and in step 52 the user can user the user input device 40 to make a selection to catalogue the video item. The selection in this embodiment can comprise a user selection of any location in the area of the displayed video frame.
For example in a touch screen implementation where the display area takes up the whole of the displayable area, it can simply comprise a tap or touch anywhere on the screen.
[9029] in response to the user selection in step S2, a user selection indicator in the form of a user feedback icon is displayed in step 53. This confirms to the user that they have selected to catalogue the item. The selection indicator can comprise any indicator to the user displayed at the point of selection by the user, such as an icon formed from at least a part of the displayed item or part of the item e.g. a frame of a video, or a button labelled with information on the item such as meta data e.g. file name. A user can then use the user input device 40 to move the icon to a navigation area of the display within the displayed area of the content of or information on the item (step S4). Conveniently this can comprise a drag operation and the navigation area comprises a predefined area of the display. in this embodiment, catalogue indicators are displayed when the icon is moved into the navigation area (step S5). In alternative embodiments, the catalogue indicators could he displayed immediately upon selection by the user and display of the icon in steps S2 arid S3, or as soon as the user starts to drag the icon i.e. even before it has reached the navigation area.
[9030] In order to select a catalogue location for the item, a user selection of a catalogue indicator is made by movifig the icon to or over a displayed catalogue indicator and dc-selecting the icon (step S6). In one embodiment this is achieve using a drag and drop operation e.g. using a touch screen, a user touches the screen to select (step S2), moves the icon by moving their finger across the screen (step S4), and selects a catalogue indicator by releasing the screen when adiacent to or over the displayed catalogue indicator (step S6). The data item is then catalogued by the processor 20 implementing the data cataloguing module 22 in accordance with the selection.
[90311 The operation on an embodiment of the invention that complies with the flow diagram of figure 2 will now he described with figures 4a to 4f, which are schematic diagrams of a device I having a display 2 showing the user interactions with the display 2 ill accordance with one embodimeilt. The user interactions can be by any type of user input device 40. In this specific embodimeilt, reference will be made to the use of a touch screen. Also in this embodiment, the touch screen of the device 1 is of limited size and hence the display area is entirely devoted to the display of the content of or information on the item. This embodiment will be illustrated with reference to the item being a video and the display 2 displaying a video frame. The device 1 in this embodiment can for example be a smart phone and the video can comprise a video, which is captured using the in-built video camera of the device 1.
[9032] Figure 4a illustrates a user's finger 3 making a selection in the thrm of a touch on the screen of any part of the displayed frame of a video. Figure 4h illustrates the display of a user selection indicator in the form of an icon 4 formed as a portion of the displayed frame. In an alternative embodiment, the icon can comprise a representative image of the entire frame to enable a user to recognize the video from the icon.
119033] Figure 4c illustrates the user moving the icon 4 across the screen to a navigation area whereupon catalogue indicators 5 are displayed. The movement of the icon 4 is by the user dragging the icon across the screen 2. The catalogue indicators are shown in the diagram with simple labels A, B, C, D, and E. However, the catalogue indicators can comprise icons having an image or a descriptive label or a combination of both. As shown in figure 4d, a user can move the icon 4 up and down to cause the catalogue indicators 5 to move in a carousel manner past the icon 4 to align a desired catalogue indicator 5 next to the icon 4 and/or to display additional catalogue indicators extending off and not displayable on the screen 2. To select a catalogue indicator 5, the user moves the icon over the selected catalogue indicator 5, which results in any sub catalogue indicators 6 for the selected catalogue indicator 5 being displayed in the navigation area overlaid on the displayed frame (in the data item display area), as shown in figure 4e. The sub catalogue indicators 6 are similar to the catalogue indicators S and can comprise an image and/or a label. The user can then move the icon 4 up and down to cause the sub catalogue indicators 6 to move up and down to align a sub catalogue indicator 6 next to the icon 4 and/or to display additional sub catalogue indicators extending off and not displayable on the screen 2. To select a sub catalogue indicator 6, the user moves the icon adjacent to or over the chosen sub catalogue item 6 as shown in figure 4f and the user releases their touch on the screen to execute the cataloging operation for the item. Hence, in this embodiment, a user is able to perform a simple drag and drop operation involving different gestures (directions of movement of the user selection indicator) to implement the various steps of the process.
[9034] For data items that comprise multiple separately viewable components e.g. videos frames, pages of documents, sheets of spreadsheets, and slides of presentations, the image on the display will he of one component. The user selection indicator will hence comprise a representation of part or the whole of the displayed component data item. Tn one embodiment, the user selection indicator can be programmed to respond to a user movement in a direction different to the direction towards the navigation area e.g. till and down to enable the displayed data item component tube change by incrementing od decrementing through the sequence of separately viewable components that constitute the data item e.g. the movement in the up or down direction enables a user to increment or decrement displayed video frames. The illcrementing or decrementing can be in single or multiple compollents in the sequence. Since, in one embodiment, the icon is formed to illustrate at least a part of the displayed component, this enables the icon image to be selected by the user to an appropriate representative image for the data item.
[90351 In an alternative embodiment, a user can select a viewable component prior to the selection operation which creates the user selection indicator. The selection of a viewable component such as a video frame, a page of a document, a sheet of a spreadsheet, and a slide of a presentation can be made by a different user input operation such as by flicking left or right on a touch screen.
Once the chosen component is displayed, the user selection to generate the user selection indicator (icon or button) can he made by for example touching the touch screen for a period of time until the icon user selection indicator is generated.
[0036] Another embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the flow diagram of figure 3 aild the diagrams of the device 11 of figures 5a to Se.
[0037] In this embodiment, the device 11 is provided with a record button 14 displayed on the display 12 to control the capture of video or audio i.e. to initiate and stop the recording of video or audio. A user 13 selects the record button 14 (step S 10) to initiate recording of video or audio (step Si 1) as shown in figure 5a. The selection is by touching and releasing the record button 14 and continues until the record button is touched again (step S12) and during this time, the recorded video frames are displayed on the screen 12. During recording the record hutton 14 may he displayed in a different state than when not recording e.g. blinking, or a different colour or it can assume an image representing the displayed frame. The recording button hence becomes an icon like the embodiment of figures 4a to 4f. When a user touches the record button 14, they can drag it across the screen 12 to a navigation area of the screen overlaying the displayed frame of the video (step Si 3) where cataloguing indicators IS are displayed. (step Si 4). Figure Sb illustrates the user moving the record hutton 14 across the screen to the navigation area whereupon catalogue indicators IS are displayed. The movement of the record hutton 14 is by the user dragging the icon across the screen 12. The catalogue indicators are shown in the diagram with simple labels A, B, C, D, and E. However, the catalogue indicators can comprise icons having an image or a descriptive label or a combination of both. As shown in figure Sc, a user can move the record button 14 up and down to cause the catalogue indicators 15 to move in a carousel manner past the record button 14 to align a desired catalogue indicator 15 next to the record button 14 and/or to display additional catalogue indicators extending off and not displayable on the screen 12. To select a catalogue indicator 15, the user moves the record button 14 over the selected catalogue indicator 15, which results in any sub catalogue indicators 16 for the selected catalogue indicatorl 5 being displayed in the navigation area overlaid on the displayed frame (in the data item display area), as shown in figure Sd. The sub catalogue indicators 16 are similar to the catalogue indicators 15 and can comprise an image and/or a label. The user can then move the record button up and down to cause the sub catalogue indicators 16 to move up and down to align a sub catalogue indicator 16 next to the record button and/or to display additional sub catalogue indicators extending off and not displayable on the screen 12. To select a sub catalogue indicator 16, the user moves the record button 14 adjacent to or over the chosen sub catalogue item 1 as shown in figure Se and the user releases their touch on the screen 12 to execute the cataloging operation for the item (step S 15). Hence, in this embodiment, a user is able to perform a simple drag and drop operation involving different gestures (directions of movement of the user selection indicator) to implement the various steps of the process. The selected video or audio item is then catalogued according to the sub category indicator i 6 selected by the user.
[90381 In one embodiment, the user selection indicator can be programmed to respond to a user movement in a direction different to the direction towards the navigation area e.g. up and down to enable the displayed video frame to he change by incrementing or decrementing through the sequence of video frames in single frame or multiple frame steps. Since, in one embodiment, the recording hutton 14 becomes an icon and is formed to illustrate at least a part of the displayed frame, this enables the icon image to be selected by the user to an appropriate representative image for the video.
[0039] In an alternative embodiment, a user can select a video frame prior to the selection of the record button. The selection of a video frame can be made by a different user input operation such as by flicking left or right on a touch screen to increment or decrement through the sequence of video frames in single frame or multiple frame steps. Once the chosen component is displayed, the user can select the record button.
[00401 In another embodiment of the invention, in a similar manner to that described with reference to figures 5a to 5e, instead of displaying a record button, for any type of data item a cataloguing button is displayed in the displayed area of the data item or part of the data item. in this way, without reserving any separate cataloging screen area, any item can be simply catalogued. For example, the screen may display a page of a document. The cataloging button is displayed in a corner of the document page to provide a simple user interface for cataloging the document by dragging and dropping using the same screen area as the displayed document page. The cataloguing button can assume the identity of the item when initially selected to become an icon or thumbnail displaying an image of the displayed part of the item or information on the item.
