Abstract

A propulsion system for a spacecraft 1 is provided. The propulsion system comprises a compressor 20, 40 and a nozzle 70. The compressor compresses the ambient atmosphere in space and the nozzle is configured to eject the compressed atmosphere to deliver a propulsion force. The compressed atmosphere may be stored in a tank 30, 50. There may be a first tank and a second tank each with an associated sub compressor for pressurising the atmosphere at different pressures. The compressor may be solar powered 21, 41. A heater 60 may be provided to heat the compressed atmosphere prior to ejection by the nozzle. The heater maybe solar powered 61.
