Description

DYNAMIC JOINT SEALING KIT
The present invention relates to a dynamic joint sealing kit adapted to be installed independently or as a component of a waterproofing system during or after installation of a shower tray or bath to create an acoustic watertight barrier between a shower tray or bath perimeter side wall and adjacent shower walls.
A first prior art means features a longitudinal strip provided in roll format and to which inside face (facing the shower tray after installation) lower portion is longitudinally attached (or integrated), a moisture sealing high tack adhesive. This arrangement is complimented with a separate four sided acoustic dampening foam tape with an exposable adhesive film on one side. To install, the adhesive face on the longitudinal strip is progressively bonded around the shower tray side wall to form a watertight seal and the acoustic insulating tape thereafter is sandwiched between the longitudinal strip and wall to reduce noise transmission through the joint.
A problem associated with the acoustic foam tape above is that after installation it keeps the up-stand strip off the wall. The up-stand strip firstly must extend out over the acoustic foam tape upper boundary before it can be bonded to the wall. Consequentially, the upper portion of the up-stand strip (above the ledge) cannot extend fully into wall corner joints.
A second prior art means features a longitudinal strip to which inside face (facing the shower tray after installation) lower portion is longitudinally bonded a four sided acoustic dampening foam strip which inside face (facing the shower tray after installation) is laminated with a pressure sensitive adhesive bed. To install, the acoustic dampening moisture seal foam strip is progressively bonded around the shower tray perimeter side wall to form an acoustic dampening watertight joint seal.
A common problem associated with the first and second prior art means disclosed above is that they must be installed before the shower tray or bath is fitted. This not only restricts the installation opportunity but creates confusion in respect of which trade is responsible for the installation -the plumber or tiler? Another common problem associated with the first and second prior art means disclosed above is that shower tray perimeter side wall corners are usually rounded whereas the corners of meeting walls into which they are located are usually 90 degrees. A rounded shower tray corner located into a 90 degree wall corner junction creates a triangular void.
When the longitudinal strip is bonded around these shower tray corners, the upper portion of the up-stand strip (above the ledge) can not extend fully into the wall corner.
It is the object of this invention to limit or eliminate the aforementioned problems
associated with such prior art (up-stand) seals.
According to the present invention there is provided a dynamic joint sealing kit adapted to be installed independently or as a component of a waterproofing system during or after installation of a shower tray or bath to create an acoustic watertight barrier between a shower tray or bath perimeter side wall and adjacent shower wall, the joint sealing kit comprising of: a flexible longitudinal strip: a moisture sealing material: an acoustic dampening sealant backer material; characterized in that the joint sealing kit further includes a separable optional means of bonding the acoustic dampening sealant backer material to a shower tray or bath perimeter side wall.
Ideally, the separable means of bonding the acoustic dampening sealant backer material to desired surfaces is through a pressure sensitive adhesive transfer tape.
Preferably, the adhesive transfer tape is an adhesive sandwiched between two removable layers of double sided coated release liner.
Advantageously, the adhesive transfer tape release liner is a silicone coated polypropylene material.
Ideally, the adhesive transfer tape is provided in roll format.
Preferably, joint sealing kit claimed acts in combination with a means of bonding the flexible longitudinal strip to a wall.
Advantageously, the means of bonding the flexible longitudinal strip to a wall is through a pressure sensitive adhesive bed.
Ideally, the acoustic dampening sealant backer material is round in section.
Preferably, the acoustic dampening sealant backer material is a compressible polypropylene foam material.
Advantageously, the moisture sealing material is an adhesive sealant that cures after application.
Ideally, the moisture sealing material is a neutral curing adhesive silicone.
The invention will hereinafter be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings, which show by way of example only, some embodiments of the seal according to the invention: In the drawings: Figure 1 represents an isometric view of a flexible longitudinal strip 20; Figure 2 represents an isometric view of a pressure sensitive adhesive transfer tape 50; Figure 3 represents an isometric view of an acoustic dampening sealant backer material 40; Figure 4 represents a section view of the invention during installation wherein acoustic dampening sealant backer material 40 is bonded to shower tray 60 through pressure sensitive adhesive transfer tape 51, this assembly is collectively located adjacent to a flexible longitudinal strip 20 fixed to a wall 80 through adhesive bed 70; Figure 5 represents a section view of the invention as disclosed in Figure 4 after installation of the shower tray 60 against the wall 80 and moisture sealing material 30 has been applied to seal the joint; Figure 6 represents a section view during a retro-fit installation wherein installation of the acoustic dampening sealant backer material 40 has been carried out after the shower tray was installed. The pressure sensitive adhesive transfer tape 50 is not used to allow the dampening sealant backer material 40 to be freely pressed into the joint between the wall 80 and shower tray perimeter side wall 61 without restriction.
Referring firstly to Figure 1 disclosing a flexible longitudinal strip 20 in roll format having a strip upper boundary 21 and a strip lower boundary 22 between which strip boundaries there extends a strip inner face 23 and a strip outer face 24 which strip outer face has a strip outer face upper region 25 and a strip outer face lower region 26 and which strip inner face has a strip inner face upper region 27 and a strip inner face lower region 28.
It should be understood that such strips are available in various laminated compositions that may or may not incorporate an exposable high tack pressure sensitive butyl adhesive as a moisture seal that may be bonded to the shower tray or bath perimeter side wall 61.
Figure 2 discloses a pressure sensitive adhesive transfer tape 50 in roll format wherein the adhesive bed 51 is releasable off both sides 53 and 54 of the release liner 52.
Typically, the adhesive transfer tape 50 will be a 7-12mm wide 60-lOOgm/m2 high tack hot melt adhesive on 60 micron 2 side silicone coated mono-oriented 12-15mm wide polypropylene film respectively.
Figure 3 discloses a longitudinal acoustic dampening sealant backer material 40 being typically a close celled polypropylene material, 6mm diameter round in section, highly flexible and compressible to facilitate squeezing into the joint between the wall 80 and shower tray 60.
It should be understood that circular foam strips are easily compressible compared to four sided (acoustic focused) foam strips which are comparably far more conducive to an application of adhesive and release liner and roll winding for transport.
Figure 4 represents a section view of the invention being installed in conjunction with installation of the shower tray 60. The installation method involves fixing the flexible longitudinal strip 20 to the wall at a desired level to accommodate the level of the ledge. In this example the strip 20 is bonded to the wall through adhesive bed 70. Alternatively, it can be hung on the wall with masking tape. The pressure sensitive adhesive transfer tape bed 51 is applied to the shower tray side wall 61 and the acoustic dampening sealant backer material 40 bonded to it. Figure 4 details the installation at the point where the shower tray 60 is about to be located against the wall 80 (as indicated by the arrow) wherein the acoustic dampening sealant backer material 40 will be compressed as shown in Figure 5.
Figure 5 represents a section view of the invention disclosed in Figure 4 but after the shower tray 60 had been located against the wall 80 and a moisture sealing material 30 (typically sanitary silicone) has been applied over the acoustic dampening sealant backer material 40 to engage both the shower tray perimeter side wall 61 and opposing adjacent longitudinal strip inner face lower region (28) in a watertight manner.
Figure 6 represents a section view during a retro-fit installation wherein installation of the acoustic dampening sealant backer material 40 must be carried out after the shower tray has been installed. The pressure sensitive adhesive transfer tape 50 is of no use as it cannot be applied onto the shower tray perimeter side wall 61 and to apply it directly onto the acoustic dampening sealant backer material 40 would prevent it been pressed down between the shower tray or bath perimeter side wall 61 and adjacent strip inner face lower region 28 as required in a retro-fit installation.
Current state of art solutions provided in respect of acoustic dampening sealant backer materials range from four sided acoustic dampening materials being pre-applied onto a longitudinal strip (which are unsuitable for retro-fit installations as disclosed herein); four sided rolls of acoustic dampening materials with a pre-applied adhesive bed on one side (which are also unsuited to retro-fit installations as disclosed herein); and sealant backer materials without an adhesive bed (which cannot be installed onto the perimeter side wall of a shower tray 61 during installation of the shower tray 60).
A round acoustic dampening sealant backer material is most advantageous where a joint sealing kit must accommodate installation during installation of the shower tray 60 or after installation of the shower tray 60 because round foam is more compressible than four sided foam and can be easily compressed for insertion into a joint.
However, the application of an adhesive bed and release liner onto round foam in the order of 6mm diameter 40 is not practical because the release liner prefers to stay flat after application and it becomes unstable when rolled for transport. Providers of such sealing kits provide adhesive backed four sided rolls of foam which are not suited to retro-fit installations.
The current invention provides an optional separable adhesion means for a round acoustic dampening sealant backer material which profile section is most advantageous for a joint sealing kit installable during or after installation of a shower tray or bath.
