Description

APPARATUS FOR PREVENTING UNAUTHORISED ACCESS TO AN IGNITION SWITCH __
This invention relates to apparatus for preventing unauthorised access to an ignition switch on a vehicle. More especially, this invention relates to apparatus for preventing unauthorised access to an ignition switch on a Mercedes Sprinter van or a Volkswagen Crafter van.
Mercedes Sprinter vans may be Euro 4 variants or Euro 5 variants. Mercedes Sprinter vans and Volkswagen Crafter vans are known to be vulnerable to being stolen by thieves. One way in which the thieves are able to steal a Mercedes Sprinter van or a Volkswagen Crafter van is by accessing the ignition switch, which then enables the thieves to bypass the vehicle immobiliser system. The ignition switch may be removed or left in place, in dependence upon how the thief decides to bypass the vehicle immobiliser system. Mercedes, Sprinter, Volkswagen and Crafter are Registered Trade Marks.
It is an aim of the present invention to reduce the above mentioned problem.
Accordingly, the present invention provides apparatus for preventing unauthorised access to an ignition switch on a van, which apparatus comprises a clamp for fitting over the ignition switch, and a side support arm for securing at a first end portion to the clamp and at a second end portion to a part of a dash of the van.
The apparatus of the present invention is advantageous in that it prevents unauthorised access to the electronic ignition switch, and thereby prevents thieves from bypassing the vehicle immobiliser system and then stealing a Mercedes Sprinter van or a Volkswagen Crafter van.
Preferably, the apparatus is one which comprises first and second fixing bolts, and in which the clamp comprises a body portion, a recess which is in the body portion and which receives the ignition switch in order to allow the fitting of the clamp over the ignition switch, and first and second apertures for receiving the first and second fixing bolts.
The first and second apertures may be in lugs which extend at right angles to sides of the body portion.
The apparatus may be one in which the first end portion of the side support arm comprises first and second apertures which align with the first and second apertures in the clamp and which receive the first and second fixing bolts. The apparatus may then be one in which the side support arm has a first flange, and in which the first and second apertures in the side support arm are in the first flange.
The apparatus may be one in which the second end portion comprises third and fourth apertures, and in which the apparatus comprises third and fourth fixing bolts for fitting in the third and fourth apertures and then fitting to the dash part of the van.
The apparatus may be one in which the side support arm has a second flange, and in which the third and fourth apertures are in the second flange. The second flange may extend at an angle with respect to the first flange.
The support arm may have a central portion having a bottom edge with a first recess, and a top edge with a second recess.
The apparatus will usually made of a metal. Other materials may however be employed. The metal may be sheet steel. The metal may be bent and/or welded to shape.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view from one end and outside of apparatus for preventing unauthorised access to an electronic ignition switch in a Mercedes Sprinter van;
Figure 2 is a view from the other end and showing the inside of the apparatus as shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an exploded view of the apparatus as shown in Figures 1 and 2; and
Figures 4-21 show stage by stage how the apparatus shown in Figures 1 - 3 is fitted in position.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown apparatus 2 for preventing unauthorised access to an electronic ignition switch 4 on a Mercedes Sprinter van 6.
As best appreciated from Figures 1-3, the apparatus 2 comprises a clamp 8 for fitting over the ignition switch 4, and a side support arm 10 for securing at a first end portion 12 to the clamp 8, and at a second end portion 14 to a part of a dash 16 of the Mercedes Sprinter van 6.
The apparatus 2 comprises first and second fixing bolts 18, 20. The clamp 8 comprises a body portion 22 and a recess 24. The recess 24 is in the body portion 22. The recess 24 receives the ignition switch 4 in order to allow the fitting of the clamp 8 over the ignition switch 4. The clamp 8 further comprises first and second apertures 26, 28 for receiving the first and second fixing bolts 18, 20.
The first and second apertures 26, 28 are in lugs 30, 32 which extend at right angles to sides 34, 36 of the body portion 22.
The first end portion 12 of the side support arm 10 comprises first and second apertures 38, 40 which align with the first and second apertures 26, 28 in the clamp 8. The first and second apertures 38, 40 receive the first and second fixing bolts 18, 20. The side support arm 10 has a first flange 42. The first and second apertures 38, 40 in the side support arm 10 are in the first flange 42.
The second end portion 14 of the side support arm 10 comprises third and fourth apertures 44, 46. The apparatus 2 comprises third and fourth fixing bolts 48, 50. The third and fourth fixing bolts 48, 50 are for fitting in the third and fourth apertures 44, 46, and then fitting to the illustrated part of the dash 16 of the Mercedes Sprinter van 6. The side support arm 10 has a second flange 52. The third and fourth apertures 44, 46 are in the second flange 52. The second flange 52 extends at an angle with respect to the first flange 42.
The side support arm 10 has a central portion 54. The central portion 54 has a bottom edge 56 with a first recess 58, and a top edge 60 with a second recess 62.
The apparatus 2 is made of sheet metal by bending and welding as shown.
The apparatus 2 is fitted in various stages as will now be described with reference to Figures 4 - 21.
The first stage is to remove the lower dash trim 63 as shown in Figures 4 and 5 by undoing the illustrated three screws 64.
As shown in Figures 6 and 7, the radio centre face trim 65 is then removed, using a plastic trim tool.
As shown in Figures 8 and 9, the centre right air vent trim 67 is then removed by removing two screws 66. The trim 67 is then removed using the plastic trim tool.
Figures 10 and 11 show how the “A” post trim 69 is gently pulled off from the inside of the Mercedes Sprinter van 6.
Figures 12-13 show the removal of one screw 68 from the top right, and two screws 70 from the bottom of the dash light switch trim 71 in order to remove the dash light switch trim.
Figures 14 and 15 show how five screws 72 are removed. This enables an installer to gently pull the clock face trim 73 towards the installer.
Figures 16 and 17 show how the ignition ring 74 and the ignition switch 4 are turned in opposite directions in order to remove them from the part of the dash 16.
Figures 18 and 19 show the fitting of the clamp 8 over the ignition switch 4, and the refitting of the ignition switch 4 and the ignition ring 74 into the illustrated part of the dash 16.
Figures 20 and 21 show the fitting of the side support arm 10. This is accomplished by fitting the two rear bolts 18, 20, and then the two front bolts 48, 50. The clock face trim is refitted together with all other panels.
The apparatus 2 prevents the unauthorised access to the ignition switch 4. This stops a thief accessing the electronic ignition switch 4, for example removing the electronic ignition switch 4, and then bypassing the electronic vehicle immobiliser system.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiment of the invention described above with reference to the accompanying drawings has been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected within the scope of the invention as defined by the following claims. Thus, for example, the shape of the clamp 8 and the shape of the side support arm 10 may be varied. The bolts may have heads for receiving a spanner and/or a screwdriver as may be required. The Mercedes Sprinter van 6 may alternatively be a Volkswagen Crafter van. Individual components shown in the drawings are not limited to use in their drawings and they may be used in other drawings and in all aspects of the invention.
The apparatus of the present invention is defined by the following clams and is specifically for use with a Mercedes Sprinter van or a Volkswagen Crafter van. It is not specified herein that the apparatus of the present invention is suitable for use with other particular vans.
