Description

Case for an Electronic Device The invention relates to a case for an electronic device, in particular for a smart phone.
Usually, people have to carry along their vehicle keys for locking and/or unlocking their vehicles. Furthermore, most people are also carrying along their smart phones with them wherever they go. In addition, people are carrying around a lot more different items on a daily basis.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a solution by means of which the amount of items that a person has to carry around on a daily basis can be reduced.
This object is solved by a case for an electronic device having the features of patent claim 1. Advantageous embodiments with expedient developments of the invention are indicated in the other patent claims.
According to the invention, a case for an electronic device, more particularly for a smart phone, comprises at least one recess at an inner surface of the case, in which components of the vehicle key are arranged and comprises at least one control element on an outer surface of the case which is connected to at least one circuit element of the vehicle key for wirelessly locking and/or unlocking a vehicle.
In other words, the case according to the invention serves both as a cover or shell for an electronic device, more particularly for a smart phone, and as a remote control for locking and unlocking a vehicle.
The invention is based on the knowledge that people usually use cases for their electronic devices, particularly for their smart phones, to protect those devices from environmental influences. The invention is taking advantage of this fact by integrating a vehicle key into the case according to the invention. Hence, the benefit of the invention is that the amount of items that the person has to carry around separately on a daily basis is reduced, since the case provides an integrated solution for protecting an electronic device and for wirelessly locking and/or unlocking a vehicle.
In an advantageous embodiment of the invention the case comprises an opening, more particularly at an end face of the case, for an infrared (IR) sensor of the vehicle key. The IA sensor can be used to program a new key for initial pairing with a vehicle. This is normally done at the factory or at a dealer when a customer replaces a key. A vehicle may have an IR sensor built into the driver's door handle as well. By directing the key's IR sensor at the driver's door handle, the driver can facilitate rolling up or down the vehicle's windows. Additionally and separate from the IR sensor, wirelessly locking and/or unlocking with the vehicle key is facilitated by radio frequency communication.
In a further advantageous embodiment of the invention, the vehicle key comprises a battery, which is removably arranged in a separate recess at the inner surface of the case. As a result, a user is able to replace the battery if needed. Furthermore, the separate recess for the battery comprises preferably custom designed battery contacts such that an energy supply of the other components of the vehicle key can be ensured.
According to another advantageous embodiment of the invention, the vehicle key comprises a mechanical key for mechanically locking and unlocking the vehicle which is removably arranged in a separate recess at the inner surface of the case. In other words, the case will house a physical key for manually unlocking and locking the vehicle.
Especially, when the battery of the vehicle key is empty or the battery of the vehicle itself is empty and hence a wirelessly locking and/or unlocking of the vehicle is not possible anymore, a person who is carrying along the case is still able to open manually the vehicle with the mechanical key, which is positioned in the case.
Preferably, the components of the vehicle key are electrically isolated. Hence, undesirable and especially harmful interferences between an electronic device put in the case and the components of the vehicle key can be prevented.
According to a further advantageous embodiment of the invention, the vehicle key comprises a circuit board containing the at least one circuit element, whereby the circuit board is non-removably arranged in a separate recess at the inner surface of the case.
Thus, the circuit board is permanently installed in the case. For example, the circuit board is sealed within the case and can only be swapped by the manufacturer of the case. As a result, the circuit board won't drop out of the case, even when the electronic device is not arranged within the case.
In a further advantageous embodiment of the invention, the control element is at least arranged flush with the outer surface of the case. In other words, the control element is at least arranged aligned with the outer surface of the case. Alternatively, the control element can also be arranged within a recess of the outer surface, such that the outer surface overtops the control element. As a result, accidental and unintentional operations of the control element can be prevented effectively.
Finally, according to another advantageous embodiment of the invention, the case comprises openings for at least a speaker, a microphone and/or control elements of the electronic device. Thereby, the complete range of functions of an electronic device which is put into the case can be ensured.
Further advantages, features, and details of the invention derive from the following description of a preferred embodiment as well as from the drawings. The features and feature combinations previously mentioned in the description as well as the features and feature combinations mentioned in the following description of the figures and/or shown in the figures alone can be employed not only in the respective indicated combination but also in any other combination or taken alone without leaving the scope of the invention.
The drawings show in: Fig. 1 a plane view of a smarthpone case, whereby an inner surface of the case is shown, which comprises three recesses for components of a vehicle key; Fig. 2 a perspective view of the case, whereas a battery and a circuit board of a vehicle key are arranged within their respective recesses at the inner surface of the case; Fig. 3 a perspective view of one embodiment of the case, whereby an outer surface of the case is shown, which comprises three control elements for controlling the functions of the vehicle key; Fig. 4 A plane view of another embodiment of the case, whereby besides the battery and the circuit board a mechanical key for mechanically locking and unlocking the vehicle is arranged within its corresponding recess at the inner surface of the case.
In the figures the same element or elements having the same functions are designated with the same reference signs.
A case 10 for a smart phone is shown in a perspective view in Fig. 1. The case 10 comprises three different recesses 12, 14, 16 at an inner surface 18 of the case 10. The shape of the recess 12 corresponds to the shape of a mechanical key 20 which is not shown in the present figure. The shape of the recess 14 corresponds to the shape of a circuit board 22, which is also not shown in the present figure. The shape of the recess 16 corresponds to the shape of a battery 24, which is also not shown in Fig. 1.
Furthermore, the case 10 comprises different openings 26 for a camera, a speaker and a microphone of a correspondingly shaped smart phone, which can be put into the case 10.
Depending on the specific smart phone model, which should be covered with the case 10 to protect the smart phone, the number and position of the different openings 26 are chosen correspondingly.
In Fig. 2 the case 10 is shown in a perspective view, whereby the circuit board 22 and the battery 24 are placed in their corresponding recesses 12, 14. Preferably, the battery 24 is removably arranged in the recess 16 such that a user is able to replace the battery 24 as soon as it is empty. The circuit board 22 is preferably non-removably arranged in the recess 14 at the inner surface 18 of the case 10. Thus, the circuit board 22 is permanently installed in the case 10, such that a user cannot remove the circuit board 22.
For example, the circuit board 22 is sealed within the case 10 such that it can only be swapped by the manufacturer of the case 10.
In Fig. 3 the case 10 is shown in another plane view, whereby all the components 20, 22, 24 which form a vehicle key for wirelessly locking and/or unlocking a vehicle are arranged within their respective recesses 12, 14, 16 at the inner surface 18 of the case 10.
In Fig. 4 one embodiment of the case lOis shown in a perspective view, whereby an outer surface 26 can be recognized. The case 10 comprises three different control elements 28 on the outer surface 26 of the case 10 which are connected to different circuit elements of the circuit board 22 for wirelessly locking and/or unlocking a vehicle. In the present case, the control elements 28 are buttons, which can be pushed by a user to lock or unlock a vehicle or for unlocking or locking just a trunk of a vehicle, for example.
The control elements 28 are sunk into the outer surface 26 to prevent accidental pressing of the control elements.
Alternatively, the control elements 28 can also be arranged aligned with the outer surface 26 of the case 10. Thereby, also an accidental pressing of the control elements 28 can be prevented. The control elements 28 are marked as they are on a usual key according to the design of a usual key. In another embodiment the control elements 28 can also be arranged flush with outer surface 26 of the case 10 as shown in Figures 1, 2, 3.
The case 10 comprises an opening 29 at an end face 30 for a not shown infrared sensor of the vehicle key. Thereby a wireless communication for locking and unlocking a car between the infrared sensor and a car can be ensured.
The case 10 can be built as two pieces as shown in Fig. 1, 2, 3 or modular as shown in Fig. 4. In a two pieces case 10, the control elements 28 are flush with the outer surface 26 of the case 10. In a modular case, the case can be built as a module separate from the electronic device. In this module, the control elements 28 can be built in different way, depending on the arrangement of interior components and battery as well as the protruding button section that includes recessed buttons.
Hence, people who are carrying around their smart phones anyway within the case 10 for covering their smart phones are provided with a device which serves both as a cover or shell for the smart phone and as a remote control for locking and unlocking a vehicle. The benefit of this case 10 is that the amount of items that a person has to carry on a daily basis is reduced since a smart phone or other electronic devices and a vehicle key can be arranged all together within the case 10.
