Abstract

A hand guard that is made up of multiple bodies (4) that are fixed to the frame of a roll cage (1) and are to be deployed when manoeuvring the cage to provide a protective barrier around the operators hand. It is deployed using a pushing/pulling motion. Once the multiple bodies (4) have been deployed they will lock into position to ensure the guard is secure if it incurs an impact. Once the operator has finished manoeuvring the cage he will simply pull the key (7) back on the locking mechanism to release it from its position and retract the multiple bodies (4) back to its stationary position parallel with the cage. The inside of the guard may be padded.

Description

Background:
This invention relates to a hand guard for roll cages.
When operators are manoeuvring roll cages in store or in the warehouses, their hands are exposed to objects and fixtures that could potentially harm them and lead to injury.
Statement of invention:
To overcome this problem, the presented invention proposes a hand guard that attaches to the outer frame of the roll cage and provides a protective barrier which is deployed when the roll cage is being manoeuvred, to avoid collisions with fixtures/objects. Whilst the cage is stationary, the guard is retracted and its rest position is parallel to the frame of the cage so that is does not protrude and thus cause risk to customers/members of staff that are in the same area of the cage. The multiple bodies of this hand guard allow it to be deployed when needed and retracted when stationary at the end of an isle or in the warehouse.
Advantages: The hand guard can provide essential protection to the operator's hand during operation of the roll cage, without permanently protruding and posing a risk to customers or other employees. As well as this, the hand guard doesn't interfere or come into contact with any products being carried on the cage, thus preventing damage. Also, the hand guard can be used on any style of roll cage without causing disruption to the function of the cage and the opening/closing of its doors due to its ability to retract and become parallel with the cage's frame.
Description:
The deployable hand guard attaches to the frame of the roll cage (1). It is deployed by a pulling/pushing motion. This motion is applied using the pull ring (2) that is attached to the main body of the guard (3). When the pulling/pushing motion is applied to the pull ring (2), the multiple bodies of the hand guard (4) will begin to deploy. This is done by a series of keys and slots (5) that enables the multiple bodies of the guard (4) to remain aligned and secure. Once deployed, the multiple bodies (4) form a protective barrier (see figure 3) around the operator's hand to guard it from objects and fixtures that they may come into contact with which can cause injury. To ensure that the operator's entire hand is protected, the main body (3) that comes into contact with the hand first, has a curved section (6) that enables entire coverage as well as ensuring that the operator can maneuverer their hand in and out of the guard without difficulty. The curved section of the main body (6) is lined with thin foam to protect the operator from irritation and to provide more comfort.
The bodies of the hand guard (4) are locked into place, once fully extended, using a key on the main body (7) that is operated by a tension spring which is located internally. Once the main body (3) is deployed fully, it will interact with the slot (9) on the pin (8) allowing the spring to release tension and positioning the key (7) into the slot (9) -thus locking the multiple bodies of the hand guard (4) in a secure position. Retracting the multiple bodies (4)of the hand guard is done by pushing the spring tensioned key (7) free from the slot on the pin (8) and rotating it back around until all multiple bodies (4) have been fully retracted and are within one another (as seen in figure 2) in the closed position.
Figure 1 shows the basic frame of the roll cage.
Figure 2 shows the hand guard in its rest position.
Figure 3 shows the hand guard fully deployed.
