Abstract
The roll 3 from which laminating material is drawn to the underside of a workpiece passing through a laminating machine 10 passes around a deflecting roller 7 before reaching a heated roller 6, so that the laminating material passes around at least 45 (preferably about 180) degrees of the circumference of the latter. This ensures that the laminating material is adequately heated before its application to the underside of the workpiece.
Description
I
IMPROVEMENTS IN LAMINATING
This invention relates to improvements in laminating and more particularly to an improved laminating machine adapted simultaneously to laminate both sides of a workpiece, such as a sheet of paper or card.
To laminate a workpiece on both sides simultaneously, where the use of an envelope of laminating material is impractical such as when laminating long runs of the workpiece, a first sheet of the laminating material is drawn down from above and a second is drawn up from below. However if the roll from which the laminating material is drawn from below is positioned to the rear of the laminating machine this undesirably extends the footprint of the machine. Space is at a premium in many workplaces and the rearward extension of the machine makes for a cumbersome, unsightly and unwieldy arrangement.
is It is therefore desirable to position the roll from which laminating material is drawn to the underside of the workpiece toward the front of the machine but the problem then arises that when passing around a heated roller prior to application to the underside of the workpiece the film of laminating material will pass around only a small proportion of the circumference of the heated roller because the latter is positioned almost immediately above the roll. The laminating material may therefore be insufficiently heated before application to the workpiece.
A principal object of the present invention is to provide a solution to this problem.
In accordance with the present invention there is provided a laminating machine adapted to apply laminating material to both sides of a workpiece, wherein laminating material to be applied to the underside of the workpiece is drawn from a roll positioned at or toward the front of the machine, means being provided to deflect the laminating material during its passage from the said roll to a heated roller below the workpiece such that the laminating material passes around more than 45 degrees of the circumference of said heated roller before application to the workpiece.
Preferably the laminating material is caused to pass around approximately 180 degrees or more of the circumference of said heated roller.
The said means is preferably a deflecting element positioned rearwardly of the said heated roller. The deflecting element may be a passive roller.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of non-limitative example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 schematically illustrates a laminating machine in which laminating material to be applied to the underside of a workpiece is drawn from a roll positioned at the front of the machine, and Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 in which the deflecting means of the present invention has been incorporated.
A laminating machine 10 adapted to apply laminating material simultaneously to both sides of a workpiece (not shown) has upper and lower components 2 and 1. In the upper component 2 is a roll 4 of laminating material which is drawn down to pass around a heated roller 5 before application to the workpiece. A second roll 3 of laminating material is positioned at the front of the lower component 1. From this laminating material is drawn to pass around a heated roller 6 before application to the underside of the workpiece.
It will be seen that with the arrangement of Figure 1 the laminating material will pass around only about 45 degrees or less of the circumference of the heated roller 6. This may mean that the laminating material is inadequately heated before application to the underside of the workpiece.
In accordance with the present invention, therefore, a deflecting roller 7 is positioned out of the direct path between the supply roll 3 and the heated roller 6 rearwardly of the heated roller 6. By passing around the roller 7 the laminating material approaches the heated roller 6 such that it passes around approximately 180 degrees of the circumference of the latter before its application to the underside of the workpiece. This ensures that the laminating material is adequately heated.
