Abstract
A medical alert system comprises a mobile phone having a facility for recording information concerning the medical condition of the user of the phone, a display screen and operating means that can be actuated to cause a message to be displayed on the screen and to transmit the recorded information. If the user suffers from a heart condition, for example, suffering from angina, a warning will be displayed on the screen when a red SOS button is pressed and a voice recording will be played to the effect that specific tablets are urgently required, and if the user is unable to get them for himself or herself or is otherwise in need of urgent assistance, the transmitted message will include an indication as to where the tablets are to be found and the required dosage.
Description
MEDICAL ALERT SYSTEM
Field of the Invention
This invention relates to medical alert systems and it is an object of the present invention to provide an improved form of medical alert system.
Summary of the Invention
According to the present invention there is provided a medical alert system comprising a mobile phone having a facility for recording information concerning the medical condition of the user of the phone, a display screen and operating means that can be actuated to cause a message to be displayed on the screen and to transmit the recorded information.
The displayed message may be to the effect that the user of the mobile phone suffers from diabetes, epilepsy, angina or other such condition and the recorded information may include instructions concerning the medication and/or treatment that should be provided in an emergency.
Brief Description of the Drawings
Figure 1 is a schematic view of a mobile phone that is designed to function as a medical alert system, and Figure 2 shows a badge to be worn by the user of the mobile phone.
Description of the Preferred Embodiment
The mobile phone shown in Figure 1 includes an in-built facility whereby the user of the phone can record all their medical details, including:-Name, Age, Address, Phone Number of Next of Kin, Doctor's Phone Number; List of Prescribed Medication, Allergies to Medication, Nut Allergies, Reaction to Bee Stings, etc. If the user suffers from a heart condition, for example, suffering from angina, a warning will be displayed on the screen 10 when a red "SOS" button is pressed and a voice recording will be played to the effect that specific tablets are urgently required and, if the user is unable to get them for himself or herself or is otherwise in need of urgent assistance, the transmitted message will include an indication as to where the tablets are to be found and the required dosage.
A connection 12 for an earphone is also provided to facilitate accurate hearing of the recording in a noisy area, for example, adjacent a busy road junction.
If the user of the mobile phone is a diabetic and slips into a coma, the generated message will include a statement to the effect that insulin is urgently required and that it may be found in the user's pocket, handbag or the like. The message may also include a reminder that, if urgent assistance is required, "999" should be called.
It can be important to provide a clear indication that the user of the mobile phone is a diabetic as some diabetics have been wrongly accused of being drunk and the use of the alert in combination with the wearing of the badge 13 shown in Figure 2 can thus save lives.
An epileptic person having a fit or loss of consciousness also runs the risk of being ignored as people walking past can assume incorrectly that they are drunk and thus be afraid of them. The use of the alert in combination with the wearing of the badge 13 can thus save the life of an epileptic person.
If police or ambulance staff are called to attend upon a user of the mobile phone, the information made available when the red "SOS" button 11 is pressed can be invaluable, saving time and enabling the police or ambulance staff to have virtually immediate access to the medical information that they require.
The housing of the mobile phone may have a chain 14 fastened to it, with the chain 14 terminating in a clip or other fastener enabling the user of the mobile phone to attach it to his or her belt or other part of their clothing to prevent theft of the mobile phone.
The mobile phone may be programmed with a special code such that, once a recording has been made of the user's medical details, the recording cannot be changed or deleted without the use of the special code. This will again provide an anti-theft facility, which is preferably enhanced by the use of an inbuilt G.P.S. facility so that the police or similar authorities will be able to ascertain the location of the mobile phone should it be stolen or mislaid.
