Description
A MONITORING DEVICE
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to a monitoring device, in particular a device for monitoring attributes on plural occasions and with reference to plural users, more particularly but not exclusively a means for measuring height of growing children.
Background
There is often a requirement or desire to measure children to ascertain their height and monitor how quickly they are growing wherein either height is measured and noted down or marks made on a wall. However this may make it harder to compare results and parents may be less likely to do this on a regular basis. Furthermore results may be lost or damage done to walls.
Commonly parents may have more than one child that they wish to measure and may also wish to measure themselves. Additionally it may be useful to record other information about the user, such as name and age. However this requires multiple records to be kept which can be timely and may be liable to become lost.
Summary of the Invention
According to the present invention there is provided a monitoring device comprising a baseboard arranged with a plurality of spaced apart indications; wherein said indications have a plurality of user-definable notice portions extendable from the baseboard in a user-controllable mutual arrangement.
In preferred embodiments the notice portions allow a user to include messages, notices, pictures, writing or similar.
In some further preferred embodiments a plurality of notice portions comprises a plurality of types of notice portions. Some notice portions may comprise writeable notes. Some notice portions may comprise catches or holders such as photo frames.
Some notice portions may comprise pin boards or surfaces.
Preferably the notes allow the user to write messages onto them and permit arrangement of said writing close to or in relation to other notice portions and/or the indications.
Preferably the holders allow the user to arrange photographs, or other items onto them, and permit the user to arrange said items in mutual arrangement with the indications and/or notes.
Preferably the surfaces are resiliently deformable or malleable and allow items to be attached or pinned to them with arrangement possible with respect to the indications, notes, and/or holders.
In this way the user is enabled to monitor growth of something or more particularly someone, by marking subsequent sizes by means of notes or items against the indications. Preferably the someone' being measured is a child and the indications are spaced apart vertically.
In preferred embodiments the baseboard is elongate. The device may, such as for example the baseboard may, further include an indicator or ledger for indicating which indications are in use at any one time. The indicator or ledger may move along the baseboard, and is ideally enabled to resist gravity. In some embodiments incremental movement may be enabled or enforced by resiliently deformable parts on the indicator or ledger click-fitting into the indications or the baseboard with respect to the indications.
The present invention may provide an elongate measuring stick arranged vertically in use and comprising a baseboard with a moveable ledger and at least one notice portions for displaying an image, item or user defined notice or message.
In this way a user such as a child can be measured, their height recorded by movement of the ledger and notice displayed with respect to the user that has been measured, for example with the time and date of the measurement or other message.
Typically the ledger is mounted to move along a vertical channel on a front face of the baseboard. The ledger may be moved up and down the channel to correspond to the user's height. Advantageously therefore the ledger is not liable to dropping under gravity as the ledger and/or the baseboard may further comprise a means of mounting that provides a friction or locking mechanism check. For example in some embodiments the locking mechanism is a twist engagement mechanism or sliding mechanism wherein the mechanism engages male parts of the ledger into the baseboard.
Ideally the ledger projects from the baseboard so as to aid with measuring the user for example so as to rest upon the user's head when the user is stood adjacent to the device, enabling accurate measuring.
Preferably the device is elongate and capable of being hung on a wall. In this way the device is provided in a vertical position suitable for measuring the user who is standing. Furthermore the device is off the ground so as not to make up much space, and can serve as an aesthetic feature.
Typically the device is substantially rectangular although in some embodiments the device may be shaped, for example to have arcuate sides, curved edges, or other shaping such as to represent a person or character.
In preferred embodiments the device includes at least one notice portion or holder for a planar item such as a photograph. Ideally the device includes a plurality of such notice portions to allow more than one image to be displayed in order that an image of users measured may be displayed on the device, or the same user at different times, for example at different ages. In this way the physical changes in the user over time may also be recorded.
Ideally the device is arranged to receive plural notice portions, for example wherein the notice portions are independent and independently available.
Preferably the notice portions primarily comprise photograph holders capable of accepting interchangeable images.
In some embodiments the baseboard may house a plurality of displaceable photograph holders for displaying images. Therefore one photograph holder may be provided for each user or the same user at a different time.
Preferably the photograph holders are arranged in use on the baseboard so as not to interfere with the ledger. Typically the notice portions may be side mounted to the baseboard so as to keep the front face of the baseboard unobstructed for the ledger.
In preferred embodiments the baseboard includes pockets or slots adapted to receive the notice portions or spurs therefrom and maintain them in place through friction or tolerance fit or detent mechanism. In this way the holders can be displaced from the baseboard in order to view the image or write adjacent whilst remaining partially attached to the baseboard. The notice portions can also be concealed when not in use, when not required to be viewed or if the device is being moved, for example when moving house.
It may be envisaged that the baseboard has plural-layer construction comprising a front face layer and at least a backing layer. Such layers are ideally spaced apart a distance smaller than the size of a connector or spur from the holder or other notice portion so as to create female slots adapted to accept the male spurs. In this way holders can be slotted between layers and maintained in place by tolerance fit.
In preferred embodiments multiple layers are provided to provide more than one slot at any one vertical and or horizontal position on the device, in particular wherein two sides of the baseboard include notice portions or slots. Therefore if more than one user of the same height separate notice portions can be held at the same position.
In some embodiments at least one of the slots may be elongated in order to allow sliding of the spur/notice portion, typically and advantageously in a vertical plane.
Typically the device may include a plurality of slots arranged along the length of the baseboard. In this way a holder closest to the height of the user can hold the image of that user.
In preferred embodiments the notice portions include more than one function of image holder, writeable area or pin board or decorative surface.
In some embodiments the frames may be capable of being displaced from a left and/or right side of the baseboard. In this way if two users have the same height two images may be displayed, one on each side of the baseboard.
In some embodiments the baseboard allows insertion of notice portions in top and/or bottom edges also.
In some further embodiments the notice portions may be linked to one another so that all or more than one notice portion(s) may be displaced at once.
In preferred embodiments the notice portions remain connected to the baseboard when displaced at least in part for example by means of at least one lug or tether, so as to prevent the notice portion from being removed or lost by children. For example the tether may include a distal T or stopper Which stopper acts as a locking mechanism in the slot.
In some other embodiments the notice portions include a pin for attachment to a surface so to be pinned, for example to the baseboard, and/or comprise a board or pin surface. Typically the front and/or side edge/s of the baseboard may be arranged to receive pins so as to allow said notice portions to be pinned in a plurality of locations.
It may be envisaged that in some embodiments said pins may be arranged on the notice portions so that the item is still displayed when pinned. In some embodiments the pins may pass through the board to allow the notice portion to act as both a board and pinned decorative surface.
In other embodiments the notice portions may be mounted on a hinge located within the device so as to enable the notice portions to swivel from a concealed position to a display position. For example multiple notice portions maybe joined by the hinge allow a fan of images or items to be displayed as required.
In preferred embodiments notice portions include a textured panel for writing to allow the user's name and height can be recorded.
In some other embodiments the baseboard may include writing panels next to the indications so that names and heights can be recorded.
Ideally the baseboard may be at least two meters long so as to be suitable for measuring adults and children, for example to measure a family or a class of school children and their teachers.
Preferably the device may be made of a lightweight, durable, strong material such as synthetic plastic to be readily manufactured and lightweight to hang on a wall.
In some embodiments the baseboard may be made at least in part from materials with other properties or have exterior coating, for example wood or metal, a chrome finish, powdercoating or a mirrored face.
In some embodiments the device may be coloured and or patterned to create a decorative feature. Additionally or alternatively the device may include text or images, for example a logo or children's character may be painted, printed, etched, engraved or embossed.
In other embodiments the notice portions may comprise digital or electronic equipment for example a screen capable of displaying multiple images, for example equipped with a connection for recordable media and a playback feature. In this way the same screen may be used to display different images and there is no requirement for a printed image or text to be provided.
In some other embodiments a front face of the baseboard may include or comprise at least one screen on which images can be displayed in addition to or alternative of displaceable notice portions; and therein comprising plural notice portions in and of itself. It may be envisaged that the device includes or accepts a power source to power the screen. For example at least one battery or connection to a mains electrical supply. The screen may be capable of displaying an image and also text, for example name of the user and their height.
It may be envisaged that in such embodiments the device further includes a control panel to operate the screen and to input information, such as the user's name.
In some further embodiments the device may be provided with a camera to photograph the user and then display that image on the notice portion(s). The camera may be operable with at least one sensor so as to automatically determine height of the user.
In yet further embodiments the ledger may be linked to a system that enables the position of the ledger to be recorded on the screen automatically.
