Abstract

A method of post installation includes fitting a non-circular cross-section base element (10) in a receiver, the base element (10) having an internally threaded formation (11) on its upper surface. The lower end of an externally threaded member (13) is engaged with the internal thread of the formation (11). An internally threaded formation (14) on the underside of a non-circular cross-section upper element (12) is engaged with the upper end of the externally threaded member (13). The internally threaded formations (11 and 14) may be nuts. In use the receiver may be permanently installed in the ground and the base element (10), which may be hollow, can be placed within it. The threaded member (13), which can be a threaded shaft element, is then screwed into the internally threaded formation (11) on the top surface of the base element (10) and then the upper element (12), which has a post receiving portion, can be screwed on to the other end of the threaded member via its internally threaded formation (14). The invention allows posts to be easily removed from their ground anchors.

Description

POST INSTALLATION
Field of the Invention
This invention relates to post installation and is concerned with the provision of an improved method of installing fence posts and gate posts.
The invention is of particular application to the installation of posts in farming environments but is not limited thereto.
There are instances in which it is desirable to be able to remove a post temporarily whilst ensuring that it is possible to reinstall the post when so required with minimal cost and labour.
Summary of the Invention
According to the present invention there is provided a method of post installation that includes fitting a non-circular cross-section base element in a receiver, the base element including an internally threaded formation on its upper surface, engaging the lower end of an externally threaded member with the internal thread of said formation, and engaging an internally threaded formation on the underside of a non-circular cross-section upper element with the upper end of the externally threaded member.
The internally threaded formation on the upper surface of the base element is preferably a nut, as is the internally threaded formation on the underside of the upper element.
Brief Description of the Drawings
Figure 1 is a perspective view of base element, Figure 2 is a plan view of the base element, Figure 3 shows an externally threaded member that can be engaged with an internally threaded member on the top of the base element, Figure 4 shows an extractor, Figure 5 is a perspective view of an upper element that can be fixed on top of the base element, and Figure 6 is a side view of the upper element.
Description of the Preferred Embodiment
Figures 1 and 2 show a base element 10 that is of square cross-section and is formed of a non-corrosive metallic material, e.g. steel. The base element 10 is fitted in a correspondingly shaped receiver (not shown) permanently installed in the ground. The base element 10 is open at its lower end but closed at its top and, at the centre of the top of the base element 10, a nut 11 is fixed in position.
In order to connect an upper element 12 (shown in Figures 5 and 6) to the base element 10, the lower end of a threaded member 13 (Figure 3) is engaged with the internal thread of the nut 11 and then the upper element 12 placed in position above the base element 10 and rotated so that the upper end of the threaded member 13 engages with the internal thread of a nut 14 attached to the underside of the upper element 12. The upper element 12 is of square cross-section and can receive the lower end of a fence or gate post (not shown).
The length of the threaded member 13 is such that, after the upper element 12 has been rotated relative to the base element 10, there is no space between the top of the base element 10 and the underside of the upper element 12, i.e. the threaded member 13 is wholly contained within the bores of the two nuts 11 and 14.
When it is desired to move the fence or gate post, the upper element 12 is detached from the base element 10 and the threaded member 13 is separated from the nut 11. There is thus a minimal projection above ground level while, at the same time, leaving the base element 10 in position so that minimal time and effort is required to replace the original fence or gate post or to install a new post.
If it is desired to remove the base element 10 from the correspondingly shaped receiver permanently located in the ground, the externally threaded extractor 15 (Figure 4) can be engaged with the nut 11 on the top of the base element 10 and a hook engaged with the aperture of the extractor 15 so that a substantial upward force can be applied.

Claims (5)

  1. Claims:- 1.
