Abstract

A brass bush has a lip 2 of sufficient depth that it can incorporate threaded holes 1. The holes provide a connection via a screw for protective conductors. Thus an earth connection between conduits can be made via a separate conductor rather than through the mechanical joint itself.

Description

Specification Document for Electrical Earthing Bush This invention relates to electrical metal conduits. Metal conduit relies upon a tight mechanical connection for its earth fault path. The connection to earth can be unsatisfactory due to painted distribution boards and electrical accessories or loose brass bushes. At present the bushes are made too thinly making tightening difficult. On occasion a gap into the electrical accessory can be seen allowing debris in and potentially causing faults.
To overcome these problems my invention proposes a raised lip on the bush that has a threaded hole on each side. A conductor can be screwed directly to the bush and taken to earth. This would provide a more reliable electrical earth connection rather than a mechanical earth. As the electrical earthing bush has a larger lip tightening is easier. The larger lip that enables connection of an earth conductor via a screw ensures no debris can enter into the electrical enclosure by completely covering the entry hole.
With rising copper prices metal conduits should be considered as the circuit protective conductor to lower the cost of certain electrical installations. The electrical earthing bush would then be able to provide reliable connection for the metal conduits at every electrical accessory and distribution board. The electrical earthing bush can be used to rectify conduit earthing problems such as metal conduit that is used for cable containment into plastic accessories. The electrical earthing bush could be used to replace the standard brass bush as it is easier to tighten, is a larger surface area that covers the entry hole completely and offers a direct earth connection from the metal conduit.
An example of the invention will now be described by referring to the accompanying drawing Figure 1 shows the raised lip of the earthing bush 2 and the threaded holes on each side of the bush 1. The thread of the bush 3 can be screwed into the coupler of the conduit. A lugged earth conductor can be connected to the bush via a screw tightened into thread 1.

Claims (3)

  1. Claims: 1. A brass electrical bush with raised edges to provide threaded holes in the bush.
  2. 2. A threaded hole in the raised edges so a screw can be tightened into the bush.
  3. 3. An earth conductor can be connected via a screw into the thread in claim 2 to provide a direct connection to the metal conduit.Page 2
