Description

Improved Electrical Socket Appliance The present invention relates to an improved electrical socket appliance, in particular an adapter for facilitating the adaptation of a typical wail mounted surface electricity outlet (otherwise known as a wall mounted socket device) comprising at least one socket, to allow for the accommodation of further electrical sockets.
Typically, electrical power is provided to buildings by means of a wall mounted socket device comprising at least one electrical socket which is itself electrically connected to the electricity supply. It is often the case that these wall mounted socket devices each comprise two electrical sockets, so that two electrical devices can be plugged in and provided with electrical power.
In the event that two electrical sockets are not sufficient for the requirements of the user, it is known to utilise an electrical socket adapter, comprising a generally elongate socket board having a suite of (for example four) electrical sockets. A typical electrical socket adapter 201 is shown in Figures 1 and 2. The electrical socket adapter 201 comprises an elongate socket board 203 having an elongate electrical cable 207 having one end exiting the socket board 203 from the side of the socket board 203 and an opposite end comprising an electrical plug 204. In this way, in the event that the electrical plug 204 of the elongate electrical cable 207. is inserted into an electrical socket of the wall mounted socket device, the electrical sockets 205 of the elongate socket board 203 are also supplied with electrical power, thereby effectively converting a single electrical socketof the wall mounted socket device into a suite of electrical sockets 205.
Despite being a commonly used means for conveniently providing electrical power to a number of electrical devices, electrical socket adapters of the type described above suffer from the disadvantage that they can be unsightly, in particular in view of the requirement for cable connecting the generally elongate socket board to the wall mounted socket device. Moreover, electrical socket adapters of the type described above are generally designed for trailing on a floor and are not generally suitable for being neatly mounted to a wall. To elaborate, the cable forming part of typical electrical socket adapters is normally quite lengthy and moreover, typically exits the elongate socket board only from the side, which in some cases can be unsightly, with the cable being quite difficult to manage in order to provide the desired streamlined effect, particularly in the event that the electrical socket adapter is also to be mounted on the wall in the vicinity of the wall mounted socket device, for example.
The aim of the present invention is to overcome, or at least alleviate, at least the above
mentioned disadvantages of the prior art.
In accordance with the present invention there is provided an electrical socket appliance comprising: - (i) a socket board having a front face and a rear face, comprising a plurality of electrical sockets, each disposed on the front face and adapted to receive an electrical plug, (ii) an elongate electrical cable disposed at one end in the interior of the socket board, whereby the second end of the elongate electrical cable is electrically connectable to the electricity supply, whereby each electrical socket of the socket board is provided with electrical power by means of the elongate electrical cable, characterised in that the socket board comprises an elongate channel disposed on its rear face, said elongate channel having a first open end at one end of the socket board and a second open end at the opposite end of the socket board, said elongate electrical cable exiting from the interior of the socket board into the elongate channel.
In having the elongate electrical cable exit from the interior of the socket board into the elongate channel, said elongate channel extending across the socket board and being open at each end, this provides the advantage that the electrical socket appliance can provide a more streamlined and versatile means of adapting a wall mounted socket device to accommodate more electrical sockets. To elaborate, in the event that the electrical socket appliance is itself also to be mounted to a wall in the vicinity of the wall mounted socket device, the elongate electrical cable can be arranged so that it can exit the socket board from either the first or the second open end of the elongate channel, to eliminate the problem of the user having to turn the elongate electrical cable back on itself once it has exited from the socket board in order that the second end of the elongate electrical cable can reach the wall mounted device to be plugged into the electricity supply.
Preferably, the elongate channel is disposed in the lower portion of the socket board in use.
This provides the advantage that, in the event that the electrical socket appliance is mounted to the wall, in the vicinity of the wall mounted socket device and directly above a skirting board for example, the elongate electrical cable can exit the socket board close to the skirting board to provide a more streamlined effect on account of the electrical socket appliance being able to sit neatly and lightly against the top of the skirting board, so that it appears to be in the style of a typical wall mounted socket device.
Preferably, said electrical socket appliance comprises a means for removably attaching the socket board to a fixed surface of a building, for example a wall. For example, the rear face of the socket board could comprise two slots at opposite ends of the socket board, whereby the socket board could be mounted on a wall by means of locating the slots over suitable protruding elements fixed to the wall.
This provides the advantage that the electrical socket appliance can be quickly and easily mounted to a wall, so that it appears to be in the style of a typical wall mounted socket device.
Preferably, the socket board comprises a further opening providing a pathway between the interior of the elongate channel and the exterior of the socket board, said opening being disposed substantially midway between the first and second open ends of the elongate channel, This provides the advantage that further versatility is afforded to the user, whereby they are presented with the further option of allowing for exit of the elongate electrical cable from the socket board by means of the further opening midway between the first and second open ends of the elongate channel, if the configuration of the skirting board and wall mounted electrical socket requires it.
Preferably, the electrical socket appliance further comprises a first end cap for selectively closing off the first open end of the elongate channel and a second end cap for selectively closing off the second open end of the elongate channel.
Preferably, the electrical socket appliance further comprises a third end cap for selectively closing off the further opening.
Preferably, that portion of the elongate channel in the vicinity of the exit of the elongate electrical cable from the interior of the socket board into the elongate channel is wider than the remainder of the elongate channel.
This provides the advantage that the elongate electrical cable can be bent so that it exits from the socket board from either the first open end of the elongate channel, the second open end of the elongate channel, or the further opening, depending upon the requirements of the user, without subjecting the elongate electrical cable to excessive bending strains.
Preferably, the socket board comprises a further elongate channel disposed on the rear face, said further elongate channel being disposed substantially perpendicular to the elongate channel, said further elongate channel having a first open end providing a pathway from the interior of the elongate channel into the further elongate channel, and a second open end providing a pathway for the elongate electrical cable from the interior of the socket board to the exterior of the socket board.
This provides the advantage of allowing for even more versatility in terms of adapting to the configuration of the skirting board and wall mounted socket device to allow for the electrical socket appliance to locate neatly on the wall of the building.
Preferred embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only and not in any limitative sense, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: -Figure 1 shows an example of the front face of a prior art electrical socket appliance; Figure 2 shows an example of the rear face of a prior art electrical socket appliance; Figure 3 shows the front face of a first embodiment of the present invention with the elongate electrical cable exiting from the socket board from the first open end of the elongate channel; Figure 4 shows the front face of a first embodiment of the present invention with the elongate electrical cable exiting from the socket board from the second open end of the elongate channel; Figure 5 shows the front face of a first embodiment of the present invention with the elongate electrical cable exiting from the socket board from the further opening; Figure 6 shows the rear face of a first embodiment of the present invention with the elongate electrical cable exiting from the socket board from the second open end of the elongate channel; Figure 7 shows the rear face of a first embodiment of the present invention with the elongate electrical cable exiting from the socket board from the first open end of the elongate channel; Figure 8 shows the rear face of a first embodiment of the present invention with the elongate electrical cable exiting from the socket board from the further opening of the elongate channel; and Figure 9 shows the rear face of a second embodiment of the present invention with the elongate cable exiting from the socket board from the open end of the further elongate channel.
With reference to Figures 3 to 8, an electrical socket appliance in the form of an electrical socket adapter, in accordance with a first embodiment of the present invention is represented generally by reference numeral 1.
The electrical socket adapter 1 comprises a socket board 3 having a front face 3a and a rear face 3b. As can be seen from Figures 3 to 8, the socket board 3 is generally elongate and comprises four electrical sockets 5, each one adapted to receive an electrical plug belonging to an electrical appliance. The electrical sockets 5 are disposed on the front face 3a of the socket board 3.
The electrical socket adapter I further comprises an elongate electrical cable 7 having one end disposed inside the socket board 3 and its opposite end 7a comprising an electrical plug (not shown) which may be inserted into the wall mounted electricity supply. In this way, when the electrical plug of the elongate electrical cable 7 is plugged into the wall mounted socket device, each electrical socket 5 of the socket board 3 is provided with electrical power.
As can be seen from Figures 6 to 8 in particular, the socket board 3 comprises an elongate channel 9 disposed on its rear face 3b, extending along the complete length of the socket board 3. The channel 9 has a first open end 9a at one end 11 a of the socket board 3 and a second open end 9b at the opposite end 1 lb of the socket board 3.
As can also be seen from Figures 6 to 8 in particular, the elongate electrical cable 7 exits from the inside of the socket board 3 straight into the elongate channel 9. In having the elongate electrical cable 7 exit from the inside of the socket board 3 directly into the elongate channel 9, this provides the advantage that the elongate electrical cable 7 can locate in the elongate channel 9 either in such a way that it leaves the socket board 3 from the first open end 9a or the second open end 9b of the elongate channel 9. In this way, the electrical socket adapter 1 can provide a more streamlined and versatile means of adapting a wall mounted device to accommodate more electrical sockets, without the user being faced with tangled cables which can get in their way and appear unsightly. To elaborate, in the event that the electrical socket adapter us itself also to be mounted to a wall in the vicinity of the wall mounted socket device, the elongate electrical cable 7 can be arranged so that it can exit the socket board 3 from either the first 9a or the second 9b open end of the elongate channel 9, to eliminate the disadvantage of the user having to turn the elongate electrical cable 7 back on itself once it has exited from the socket board 3 in order that the end 7a of the elongate electrical cable 7 can reach the wall mounted socket device to be plugged into the electricity supply in a neat fashion.
In order to provide even further versatility for the user, the socket board 3 comprises a further opening in the form of a slot 15 disposed approximately mid way along the elongate channel 9, and connecting the interior of the elongate channel 9 with the exterior of the socket board 3. The slot 15 provides the advantage that the user is presented with the further option of allowing for exit of the elongate electrical cable 7 from the bottom as opposed to the side of the socket board 3 in use, by means of the slot 15, if the configuration of the skirting board and wall mounted socket device requires it.
Again as can be seen from Figures 3 to 8 in particular, the elongate channel 9 is disposed in the lower portion of the socket board 3 in use. This provides the advantage that, in the event that the socket board 3 is to be mounted directly above a skirting board for example, the elongate electrical cable 7 can exit the socket board 3 close to the skirting board in an unobtrusive fashion to provide a more streamlined effect. In particular, the socket board 3 and the elongate electrical cable 7 exiting the socket board 3 can sit neatly and tightly against the top of the skirting board, so that it appears to be in the style of a typical wall mounted socket device.
As can be seen from Figures 3 to 8 in particular, the socket board 3 comprises two keyhole slots 13 disposed at each end of the socket board 3, which facilitate the mounting of the socket board 3 to screws on a wall for example, further ensuring that the electrical socket adapter appears to be in the style of a typical wall mounted socket device.
The electrical socket adapter I further comprises a first end cap 1 7a for selectively closing off the first open end 9a of the elongate channel 9, a second end cap l7b for selectively closing off the second open end 9b of the elongate channel 9, and a third end cap 17c for selectively closing off the slot 15. In this way, the various openings through which the elongate electrical cable 7 can exit the socket board 3 can be closed off when they are not being used so that they provide an even more streamlined profile to the user.
As can be seen from Figures 3 to 8 in particular, that portion of the elongate channel 9 mid way between the first 9a and second 9b open ends of the elongate channel, in the vicinity of the exit of the elongate electrical cable 7 from the interior of the socket board 3 into the elongate channel 9, is wider than the remainder of the elongate channel 9. In this way, the elongate electrical cable 7 can be bent so that it exits from the socket board 3 from either the first open end 9a of the elongate channel 9, the second open end 9b of the elongate channel 9, or the slot 15, depending upon the requirements of the user, without subjecting the elongate electrical cable 7 to excessive bending strain on account of forcing it to undergo a small radius of curvature.
Turning now to Figure 9, a second embodiment of an electrical socket adapter of the present invention is represented generally by reference numeral 101. The electrical socket adapter 101 is similar to that of Figures 3 to 8 but for the provision of a further elongate channel 119 disposed on a rear face 103b of the socket board 103. The further elongate channel 119 is disposed substantially perpendicular to the elongate channel 109 and provides a further pathway for facilitating the exit of the elongate electrièal cable 107 from the socket board 103, but this time from the top of the socket board 103 in use, as opposed to from the sides 109a, 109b or the bottom 115 of the socket board 103 in use, as is the case in Figures 3 to 8. In this way, the user is provided with even more versatility in terms of adapting to the configuration of the skirting board and wall mounted socket device, to allow for the electrical socket adapter 101 to locate neatly on the wall of the building in an unobtrusive and streamlined fashion and appear similar to a typical wall mounted socket device.
It will be appreciated by persons skilled in the art that the above embodiments have been described by way of example only, and not in any limitative sense, and that various alterations and modifications are possible without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
