Abstract

A software process for verifying the integrity and accuracy of sensitive online digital Koran text activated using a web-browser toolbar that can be downloaded and installed by online users as a software plug-in browser-component. The software will identify diacritised Arabic text and compare it to an authentic Koranic text and if it is verified then a digital certificate is issued, and displayed in the browser.

Description

Digital Quran e-Content Integrity Analyser The present invention relates to a software framework and process for verifying that online Quran text being displayed within web-pages had originated from an authentic source/body for integrity-checking.
Major developments in information and communication technologies (ICT) have combined with the widespread growth of the Internet to enable the ease of digital content distribution, communication and reproduction of multimedia data. However, such benefits come in-hand with the problems and threats associated with ensuring digital copyright protection, preventing digital counterfeiting, proof-of-authenticity and content-originality verification for online disseminations of sensitive digital text content as the predominant form of online data. Online disseminations of the Holy Quran present one particular application of sensitive textual information which requires such protection. In particular, integrity and source-originality verification of the Holy Quran has become an increasing requirement for many users and digital Quran publishers alike throughout the Middle East and the world in order to counter intentional or unintentional tampering of the Quranic text by intermediaries during communications on public-networks before being displayed on the browsers of end-users.
To overcome the problems associated with integrity-verification of the digital Quran text, the present invention proposes a verification-tool in the form of a software plug-in component to be downloaded and installed by end-users. The plug-in would then appear as a toolbar icon on the userTs web-browser. The toolbar icon would then have an option for activation, which when selected, would process the displayed Quranic contents for verifying content-integrity.
According to the present invention, a software plug-in component would be readily provided by authentic digital Quran publishers for downloading onto end-user computers. Upon download and installation of the software plug-in, a new toolbar icon would be introduced on the users web-browser; appearing as an e-Quran INTEGRAFIER icon-button. The verification-tool can be activated by clicking on the button and selecting activate' within the menu-list. Once active, the underlying algorithm would retrieve the Quran-portions from the current web-page being displayed. This is achieved by detection of complete or partially diacritised Arabic text portions [diacritics are the symbols which decorate the fundamental Arabic text to elaborate on pronunciation and are detected by searching for symbols other than the fundamental Arabic characters) within the currently displayed webpage. Notably, the use of complete diacritised Arabic text (and to some extent, partial diacritised text) is rare, except in the case of formal and religious online text, which provides an effective means for searching potential sites containing Quranic verses. Next, the electronic-Arabic text content is converted into Unicode values using the standard Unicode format for representing characters in binary form. The numerical Unicode values representing the Arabic-Quran text would then be encrypted using the standard Rivest-Shamir-Adleman (RSA) algorithm with an encryption-key (e.g. a private-key) known only to the client. The encrypted message would then be sent to a trusted third-party moderator, known as the digital certification authority (CA) in the internet-community who can decrypt the message using a public key known to both communicating parties which consequently verifies the sender and the authenticity of the client-query. Forthcoming communications to be sent from the CA to the client are achieved by the CA encrypting the message with the known public-key, which once received by the client, is decrypted using the client's private-key. Hence, a secure communications mechanism is established that enables the validity of both communicating parties to be verified. A similar requirement and procedure for secure communications is established between the publisher and CA. The plug-in component/tool, together with an algorithm for deriving the client's specific private-key [based on a unique ID such as the IP-address or other unique code at the user-terminal) would be simultaneously downloaded by users after visiting the publisher's website or CAs designated website. The user-end plug-in tool can then use the private-key to transparently encrypt future Quran-text verification-queries to the CA. The CA maintains details of the original electronic-Quran (e-Quran) complete-text content obtained from the authentic publisher, in addition to the public-key of the digital-publisher registered with the CA -this is required for secure communications between the CA and publisher. The proposed workilow/process is also compatible with the well-known public-key infrastructure (PKI) commonly used for establishing secure online communications between a client and CA and between the CA and original publisher of some digital content.
Following the establishment of a secure communications protocol between the publisher and CA, and between the client and CA, the encrypted client-query is then transmitted to the CA. The CA would then verify the integrity of the Quran-text by decrypting it using the client's public-key used for decryption and performing character-character Unicode comparisons between the pre-registered original text [or pre-stored and identified portions] stored with the CA and the query-text received from the user-browser/displayed web-page. Following completion of necessary comparison (text integrity-verification) procedures, a decision is made by the CA as to whether a digital-certificate can be issued for the displayed Quran-text at the end-user browser (webpage] or not. References to issued digital certificates are then embedded in the source-code of the HTML/Javascript file in order to display the certificate-logo within the currently viewed end-user web-page.
The invention will now be described with reference made to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 illustrates a high-level overview of the verification-process workflow for Quran-text displayed on user web-pages and the issuance of digital certificates.
Figure 2 shows an example web-page with Quran-text being displayed on the user's browser with the addition of the new e-Quran INTEGRAFIER' toolbar icon. The issued digital-certificate can also be viewed at the bottom of the diagram.
