Abstract

A Covert PIN Pad/Joystick (CPP/CPJ,) having a shaft/stick, three-key pad and Mount/Baseplate, is to allow undetectable entry of a PIN code for use in ATM machines, PDQ point of sale solutions and security access codes. The system differs from the traditional keypad as it relies on the number of key presses rather than striking individual keys — thus making covert detection of inputted keys extremely hard. The user would use ring, middle and index fingers to depress three keys A, B, C a known number of times. The thumb would be used to actuate a shift bar/function or shift function key or Thumb/shift button. The shift function key is to alter the numeric result of the key depressions. Keys and thumb bar are provided as two sets to accommodate both left and right-handed users.

Description

Covert PIN Pad/Joystick (CPP/CPJ)
Description
The principle of the Covert PIN Pad/Joystick (CPP/CPJ) is to allow undetectable entry of a PIN code for use in ATM machines, PDQ point of sale solutions and security access codes.
The system differs from the traditional keypad as it relies on the number of key presses rather than striking individual keys -thus making covert detection of inputted keys extremely hard.
The user would use the ring, middle and index fingers to depress three keys a known number of times. The thumb would be used to actuate a shift' bar/function to alter the function of the three keys. Keys and thumb bar would be provided as two sets to accommodate both left and right-handed users (see Figure 1).
Key Press Example (Figure 2) Action Key Shift Position Key Presses Rcsult Sequence (ref Fig.1) (ref Fig.1) _________________ _________________ 2nd A t (no shift) 3 presses 3 2st B if' 2 presses _________________ 3rd C if' 4 presses 4 4th A 1-(shifted) 3 presses 11 Resultant Pin number (Figure 3) Acton 1 Action 2 Action 3 Acton 2 3 4 ii.
It can be seen that as the PIN number position is key-dependent it can be entered in any order -and a different order every time by way of misleading any covert viewer. :1-

Claims (3)

  1. Claims 1. A method of entering a PIN code using key depression counts.
  2. 2. A multi-key joystick or pad system according to claim 1, in which key depression counts for each key are used to construct a unique number.
  3. 3. A key system according to claim 2, that has a shift function key to alter the numeric result of the key depressions.
