Description

Improvements in or relating to footwear The present invention relates to an article of footwear, particularly, but not exclusively, to a shoe.
When putting shoes on a person, particularly a child, it is difficult to get the foot into the shoe. This is particularly difficult with shoes that are slip-on and have no laces. The problem arises because the access point for the foot has to be small enough to prevent the shoe from slipping off of the foot, but large enough to allow the foot to be entered into the shoe. The difficulty lies in getting the foot completely in the shoe without distorting the shape of the shoe or exerting too much force on the foot. Adults often require a shoe horn to get their foot into the shoe, and children do not like the discomfort of having their foot manipulated to get their foot into the shoe.
The inventor of the present invention has appreciated the shortcomings with the known shoes described above.
According to the present invention there is provided an article of footwear, the article of footwear comprising: a sole portion; an upper portion; a tongue portion, wherein the tongue portion is attached to the sole portion or the upper portion, and wherein at least a portion of the tongue portion is formed into two separable pads; and a fastening device, wherein the fastening device is attachable to the tongue portion and is operable to hold the two separable parts of the tongue portion in a fixed arrangement with respect to one another.

An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:-Figure 1 is a perspective view of an article of footwear according to the present invention; Figures 2 and 3 show the article of footwear of figure 1 in an unfastened configuration; Figure 4 is a side view of figure 3; Figure 5 is a side view of figure 1; Figure 6 is a plan view of the tongue portion of the article of footwear; Figure 7 is a plan view of a lower surface of the second member of the fastening device of the article of footwear; Figure 8 is an exploded view of the article of footwear of figure 1; and Figure 9 is a cross-sectional side view of the article of footwear of figure 1.
Figures 1 to 5 illustrate a shoe 10 (an example of an article of footwear).
In the embodiment illustrated and described here, the shoe 10 is a slip-on, laceless, type shoe. However, it should be appreciated that present invention also includes other types of shoes.
The shoe 10 includes a sole portion 12, an insole portion 13, an upper portion 14, a tongue portion 16 and a fastening device 18.
The sole portion 12 may be made from leather, rubber, or the like, and the upper portion 14 may be made from leather, or any other suitable material.
The tongue portion 16 is a substantially planar member which extends between an inside portion 14a and outside portion 14b of the upper portion 14. An inside portion 16a of the tongue portion 16 is attached to the inside portion 14a of the upper portion 14 and an outside portion 16b of the tongue portion 16 is attached to the outside portion 14b of the upper portion 14. The tongue portion 16 may also be attached to the upper portion 14 towards a toe portion 20 of the shoe 10.
In the embodiment illustrated and described here, the upper portion 14 of the shoe 10 is configured to define a U-shaped tongue attachment portion 14c, which is complimentary in shape to the portion of the tongue 14 attached thereto. However, it should be appreciated that the shape and arrangement of the upper portion 14 and tongue portion 16 of the shoe 10 could be of any suitable arrangement.
As illustrated in figures 2, 3 and 6, a portion of the tongue portion 16 is formed in two separable parts 16c, 16d. The tongue portion 16 is split towards an end of the tongue portion that is distant from the toe portion 20 of the shoe 10. The tongue portion 16 is therefore split at a point which is adjacent the foot access point 17 In the embodiment illustrated and described here, the tongue portion 16 is only partially split to form the two separable parts 16c, 16d. However, it should be appreciated that the tongue portion 16 may be entirely split, such that the two separable parts 1 6c, 1 6d are two completely separate components. In this arrangement, each part 16c, 16d of the tongue portion 16 is attached to the upper portion 14 of the shoe 10.
As best illustrated in figure 2, the shoe 10 includes a longitudinal axis 22 which extends between a heel portion 24 and the toe portion 20 of the shoe 10, and the tongue portion 16 is split along the direction of the longitudinal axis 22. Each part 16c, 16d of the tongue portion 16 is therefore located on either side of the longitudinal axis 22 and the tongue portion 16 is substantially symmetrical in the direction of the longitudinal axis 22.
As illustrated in figures 2 and 3, the two separable parts 1 6c, 1 6d of the tongue portion 16 are nioveable between a first position (figure 2), where the two separable parts 1 6c, 1 6d are positioned substantially adjacent one another, and a second position (figure 3), where the two separable parts 16c, 16d are positioned apart from one another.
As best illustrated in figures 2, 3, 6 and 7, the fastening device 18 comprises a first member 18a and a second member 18b.
The first member 18a has two parts 18c and 18d. The first part 18c is attached to part 16c of the tongue portion 16 and the second part 18d is attached to the part 1 6d of the tongue portion 16. In the embodiment illustrated and described here the first member 1 8a includes a hook or loop fastener device. The hook or loop fastener device is attached to both parts 16c and 16d of the tongue portion 16.
The second member 18b is a substantially planar member which is configured such that it may substantially cover the two separable parts 16c, 16d of the tongue portion 16, as illustrated in figures 1 and 2 and described further below. As illustrated in figure 1, the second member 1 8b also extends between the inside portion 14a and outside portion 14b of the upper portion 14.
As illustrated in figures 2, 3 and 7, the second member 18b includes the other of a hook or loop fastener device to the first member 1 8a. The hook or loop fastener device is attached to a portion of the second member 1 8b, as illustrated in figure 7.
As explained below, the second member 1 8b is operable to hold the two separable parts 1 6c, 1 6d of the tongue portion 16 in a fixed arrangement with respect to one another. The first and second members 18a, 18b of the fastening device 18 are fastenable together via the hook and loop fastening devices located thereon.
As illustrated in figures 1, 8 and 9, the second member 1 8b of the fastening device 18 is attached to the tongue portion 16 (and/or the upper portion 14) of the shoe 10. The second member 1 8b of the fastening device 18 is stitched to the tongue portion 16 (and/or the upper portion 14) of the shoe 10. The second member 18b of the fastening device 18 is attached to the tongue portion 16 such that it may pivot with respect to the tongue portion 16. The second member 18 may pivot around a pivot point 26. The pivot point 26 lies on an axis 28, which is substantially orthogonal to the longitudinal axis 22.
The second member 1 8b of the fastening device 18 is, for example, made from the same material as the upper portion 14 and tongue portion 16 of the shoe 10. However, it should be appreciated that the second member 1 8b of the fastening device 18 and the upper portion 14 may be made from any suitable materials.
The hook and loop fastening devices of the fastening device 18 may include VelcroTM. The VelcroTM may be attached to first and second members iSa, 18b of the fastening device 18, as described above.
With reference to figures 1 to 3, in order to fit the shoe 10 to a wearer, the shoe 10 is initially placed in the arrangement illustrated in figure 3. Here the second member 1 8b of the fastening device 18 is pivoted away from the shoe 10 about pivot point 26 and the two separable parts 16c, 16d of the tongue portion 16 are positioned apart from one another, i.e. in the second position. In this arrangement a large portion of the insole portion 13 of the shoe 10 is exposed. This opens up the access point for the foot of the wearer, thus making it easier to fit the shoe 10 to the foot.
Once the wearer has their foot in the shoe 10 the two separable parts 1 6c, 1 6d of the tongue portion 16 are moved down towards the instep of the foot, i.e. moved towards the first position, as illustrated in figure 2. The two separable parts 1 6c, 1 6d are moved downwards until they are in contact with the instep of the foot. The second member 18b of the fastening device 18 is then pivoted down to make contact with the two separable parts 1 6c, 1 6d of the tongue portion 16 and the first member 18a of the fastening device 18, as illustrated in figure 1. In this arrangement the fastening device 18 holds the two separable parts 1 6c, 16d of thetongue portion 16 in atixed arrangementwith respecttoone another. That is, when the second member 1 8b of the fastening device 18 is in engagement with the first member 18a of the fastening device, the two separable parts 1 6c, 1 6d of the tongue portion 16 cannot move with respect to one another. In this arrangement the shoe 10 is secured to the foot of the wearer. The fact that the tongue portion 16 of the shoe has a portion which is separated into two parts 16c, lCd means that the shoe 10 can be fitted comfortably to different sizes of feet, since the two separable parts 1 6c, 1 6d can have a variable position with respect to the foot.
The tightness or looseness of how the shoe 10 is fitted to the foot of the wearer may be adjusted by the combination of the two separable parts 16c, 16d of the tongue portion 16 and the second member 18b of the fastening device 18.
The shoe 10 of the present invention allows easy insertion of the foot therein, since the two separable parts 1 6c, 1 6d of the tongue portion 16 and the second member 1 8b of the fastening device 18 may be moved far apart to expose a large portion of the insole 13. In this arrangement, since the two separable parts 16c, 16d of the tongue portion 16 and the second member 1 8b of the fastening device 18 may be held in the open arrangement freely without any great difficulty (i.e. no biasing devices acting to bias the two separable parts 1 6c, 1 Cd of the tongue portion 16 and the second member 1 8b of the fastening device 18 into the closed position) it is very easy to get the foot into the shoe 10.
The shoe 10 may then secure the foot in a comfortable position for the wearer using the fastening device 18, as described above.
The shoe 10 of the present invention is therefore easy for both adults and children to fit, without the need for a shoe horn, excessive foot manipulation or shoe deformation.
The shoe 10 of the present invention offers a simple solution to the difficulties of involved in fitting and securing shoes to feet. The shoe 10 of the present invention uses a simple fastening device 18 which is quick and simple to use, as opposed to, for example, laces.
The fact that the two separable parts 1 6c, 1 6d of the tongue portion 16 are adjustable with respect to the wearer's foot means that the shoe 10 can accommodate feet of various widths. This is particularly advantageous for children and, in particular, young children.
The fact that the fastening device 18 is covered by the second member 18b ensures that the fastening method is concealed below the second member 1 8b and is also flush or within the shoe circumference, thus making it less likely to become unfastened by, for example, the two separable parts 16c, a6d of the tongue portion 16 catching on something.
That is, the fact that the fastening device 18 is covered by the second member 1 8b of the fastening device 18 ensures that the two fastening device 18 is less likely to become unfastened by, for example, the two separable parts 16c, 16d of the tongue portion 16 catching on something.
Modifications and improvements may be made to the above without departing from the scope of the present invention. For example, the located where the second member 18b of the fastening device 18 is attached to the upper portion 14 may be at any location between the toe portion 20 and the tongue portion 16.
Furthermore, although the two separable parts 1 6c, 1 6d of the tongue portion 16 have been illustrated and described above as being planar flap members, it should be appreciated that the two separable parts 16c, 16d of the tongue portion 16 may have any suitable shape that allows cooperation with the fastening device 18.
Also, although the second member 18b of the fastening device 18 has been illustrated and described above as being attached (stitched) to the tongue portion 16 and/or the upper portion 14 of the shoe, it should be appreciated that the second member 1 8b of the fastening device 18 may be fastenable to the first member 1 8a of the fastening device 18 by simple placing it thereon.
