Abstract

An IP enabled fire detector 1,2 is provided. The detector may be smoke, thermal or Carbon Monoxide based. The detector has a built in communication facility allowing it to communicate via a TCP/IP network connection to the internet. A web interface 5 may allow remote monitoring of the detector. The detector has the ability to send email messages as an alert. The detector may connect to the internet via a router, modem, or network switch 3. The connection may be wired or wireless.

Description

DESCRIPTION Title
IP Network enabled fire detector/alarm
Background
Most fire/smoke detectors sound an audible alarm if they are triggered. Some smoke/fire alarms can communicate via GSM mobile telephone networks but this requires a SIM card and a subscription to the mobile phone network for them to work. Others use a proprietary radio protocol to communicate with a control panel to centralise fire warnings.
No fire/smoke detectors have the ability to use the TCP/IP (Internet Protocol) to communicate with the internet directly. This invention solves that problem. The IP Network enabled fire detector/alarm has a built in interface that can communicate directly to a TCP/IP router via a network cable or via the IEEE 802.11 wireless standard (WIFI) standard. It can therefore warn of a potential fire by sending an email or allow any internet connected device to monitor the status of the alarm.
Description
The IP Fire Alarm is a fire detector (smoke, thermal or Carbon Monoxide based detector) that has a built in interface that can communicate via a TCP/IP network connection to any device connected to the internet. The unit has an inbuilt web interface to allow remote status monitoring and an ability to send email messages as an alert system.
TCP/IP connectivity can be via a cable from the detector to the local network or by using the protocols defined by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers' (IEEE) 802.11 standards commonly known as WIFI.
Key features 1. Fire detector can communicate with TCP/IP based networks and on to the internet 2. IEEE 802.11 WIFI or network cable connection supported 3. Notification of changes to the alarm status or regular messages can be sent by email 4. Built in web interface allows any remote machine capable of running a web browser to access and monitor the status of the alarm and reset it Other features 1. Password protection prevents unauthorised users from accessing the device over the internet Examples of use (see Figure 1) 1. IP enabled fire detectors(1) and (2) can communicate with the internet via a router/ADSL modem (3). They can communicate via a network cable (1) or via the IEEE 802.11 standard WIFI (2).
2. Remote monitoring of fire alarm from an internet-connected PC. The IP enabled fire detector (1) or (2) communicates with a router/ADSL modem (3) to the internet. Any other device such as a PC (5) connected to the internet can monitor the status of the detector and via the IP enabled detectors interface can reset it or alter it's settings.
3. Alert sent to mobile phone or tablet/mobile computing device if fire occurs. Any mobile computing device (e.g. mobile phone, tablet computer or laptop computer) with the ability to collect email(6) can receive the email alerts sent by the IP enabled detectors (1) or (2).
