Abstract
A tensioned display apparatus 101 comprises a display banner 102 formed from a continuous band of supple material and a frame 103 configured to support the banner 102 in a tensioned condition. The frame 101 comprises at least first, second and third corner posts connected to allow the distance between a pair of end corner posts to be adjusted such that the frame 103 is adjustable between a display banner receiving condition, in which the pair of end corner posts are closer together, and a display banner supporting condition, in which the pair of end corner posts are wider apart to support the display banner 102 in a tensioned condition around the frame 103. The frame is preferably a triangular prism or square prism to form a column display. The adjustable frame preferably comprises a threaded rod and a cooperating tube with an end nut to allow the distance between adjacent corner posts to be altered.
Description
DISPLAY APPARATUS
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to display apparatus, in particular to display apparatus comprising a display banner and a frame for supporting the display banner in a tensioned condition.
Background of the Invention
Display apparatus in the form of a sign comprising a display banner and a frame for supporting the display banner in a tensioned condition are known.
Such a display sign may be used at a temporary location, for example in an exhibition or lecture hall, or as a sales device within or to the front of commercial premises.
United Kingdom Patent Publication Na GB 2483 786 A, in the name of the present Applicant, discloses a display sign comprising a continuous band of readily deformable material and a frame comprising a pair of support members that are normally biased apart, around which the continuous band of readily deformable material extends to present two oppositely directed display surfaces.
It is desirable for a display apparatus in the form of a sign comprising a display banner and a frame for supporting the display banner in a tensioned condition to be quick and easy to prepare for use, to be sufficiently robust to allow reuse and to allow convenient exchange of one display banner for another :> 25 display banner.
Summary of the Invention
:0 According to a first aspect there is provided display apparatus comprising a display banner and a frame, said display banner comprising a continuous band of *..: 30 supple material, and said frame configured to support said display banner in a tensioned condition; said frame comprising first, second and third corner posts so connected as to allow the distance between a pair of end corner posts to be P72987 adjusted such that the frame is adjustable between: a display banner receiving condition, in which said pair of end corner posts are closer together and said frame is configured to receive the display banner around said frame, and a display banner supporting condition, in which said pair of end corner posts are wider apart and said frame is configured to support said display banner in a tensioned condition around said frame.
In an embodiment, the frame comprises only said first, second and third corner posts, and said display banner presents three substantially planar sides when supported by said frame in said display banner supporting condition.
In an embodiment, the frame further comprises an additional fourth corner post, and said display banner presents four substantially planar sides when said frame is in said display banner supporting condition.
In an embodiment, the frame comprises at least one adjustable length cross member configured to extend between said pair of end corner posts such that is adjusting the adjustable length cross member adjusts the distance between the pair of end coiner posts.
In an embodiment, the frame further comprises a plurality of feet, one for each corner post.
In an embodiment, the display apparatus further comprises a base for the frame.
In an embodiment, the frame is collapsible into a storage condition.

Detailed Description of the Embodiments
There will now be described by way of example a specific mode contemplated by the inventor. In the following description numerous specific details are set forth in order to provide a thorough understanding. It will be apparent however, to one skilled in the art, that the present invention may be practiced without limitation to these specific details. In other instances, well known methods and structures are not described in detail so as not to
unnecessarily obscure the description.
Figure 1 Display apparatus 101 is shown in Figure 1. The display.apparatus 101 comprises a display banner 102 and a frame 103 for supporting the display banner 102. The display banner 102 comprises a continuous band of supple material, and the frame 103 is adjustable between a display banner receiving condition, in which the frame 103 is configured to receive the display banner 102 around the frame 103, and a display banner supporting condition, in which the frame 103 is configured to support the display banner 102 in a tensioned condition around the frame 103.

In the arrangement shown at A, the frame 103 is shown in the display banner receiving condition, with the display banner 102 located around the frame 103 and it can be seen that the sides of the display banner 102, such as side 204, are slack around the frame 103. in the arrangement shown at B, the frame 103 is shown in the display banner supporting condition, with the display banner 102 located around the frame 103 and it can be seen that the sides of the display banner 102, such as side 204, are taut around the frame 103. At B, the display banner 102 is shown held in a tensioned condition around the frame 103, and the sides of the display banner 102, such as side 204, presents a substantially planar surface According to this illustrated embodiment, the frame 103 comprises only the first, second and third corner posts 201, 202, 203, and the display banner 102 presents three substantially planar sides when supported by the frame 103 when * in the display banner supporting condition. Thus, as can be seen in this Figure, . when the frame 103 is in the display banner supporting condition, it has a triangular shape. In this embodiment, the display banner 102 presents three substantially planar sides of substantially equal length Y when supported by the frame 103 when in the display banner supporting condition.

Each of the pair of end corner posts 201, 203 is pivotably connected to the third corner post 202 by at least one cross member 301. The frame 103 s ccomprises at least one adjustable cross member 302 configured to extend between the pair of end corner posts 201, 203 such that adjusting the adjustable cross member 302 adjusts the distance X between the pair of end corner posts 201,203.
In this illustrated embodiment, the adjustable cross member 302 comprises a tube 303, an externally threaded rod 304 rotatable within the tube 303, and an internally threaded adjustment knob 305 rotatable along the externally threaded rod 304. As shown, the tube 302 has an outer end 306 and an inner end 307, the rod has an outer end 308 and an inner end 309 and the adjustment knob 305 is configured to abut against the inner end 307 of the tube 303. Thus, when the rod 304 is located within the tube 303 to the extent that the adjustment knob 305 is in abutment with the inner end 307 of the tube 303, rotating the adjustment knob 305 such that it travels along the rod 304 adjusts the overall length Z of the adjustable cross member 302, between the outer end 306 of the tube 303 and the outer end 308 of the rod 304.

. : According to the present embodiment, each of the corner posts 201, 202 and 203 comprises a tube. As shown the tube has a circular cross-sectional shape. The rounded shape of the corner posts 201, 202 and 203 avoids the presentation of sharp edges that may cause injury to a user or cause damage to a display banner.
P72967 The adjustable cross member 302 is shown extending between the end corner posts 201, 203 with each end 306, 308 located through a different one of the apertures 310, 311 of the corner posts 201, 203, and with each end 306, 308 of the adjustable cross member 302 being in contact with the inner surface of the end corner posts 201, 203 in which it is received.
Each end of the tube of the corner posts 201, 202 and 203 defines a threaded aperture. For example the upper end 312 of end corner post 201, defines a threaded aperture 313. Each end 314, 315 of the cross member 301 defines an aperture 316. A threaded mechanical fixing 317, in the form of a bolt, extends through the aperture 316 of end 314 of cross member 301 and into the threaded aperture 313 of the upper end 312 of end corner post 201, to secure the end 314 of the cross member 301 to the top of the end corner post 201. In the arrangement shown in this Figure, a washer 318 is provided between the top of the end corner post 201 and the cross member 301, to facilitate pivoting around the bolt 317.
In this embodiment, each of the pair of end corner posts 201, 203 is pivotably connected to the third corner post 202 by a pair of cross members 301, with one at each of the upper and lower ends of the end corner posts 201, 203.
This improves the stability of the frame 103 when in use.
Further, in this embodiment, the frame 103 ccomprises a pair of adjustable length cross members 302 configured to extend between the pair of end corner posts 201, 203, with one towards the top ends of the end corner posts 201, 203 and the other towards the bottom ends of the end corner posts 201, 203. Again, this improves the stability of the frame 103 when in use.
Figure 4 : As shown in Figure 4, the frame 103 of the display apparatus 101 may comprise a plurality of feet. In an embodiment, a foot is provided for each corner post of the frame.
In this illustrated embodiment, the frame 103 comprises a first foot 401, a second foot 402 and a third foot 403, one for each of the first, second and third corner posts 201, 202, 203. The feet are shown connected to the frame 103 at S..
P72987 A. Each foot 401, 402, 403 is releasably connectable to the bottom of a corner post, and the feet 401, 402, 403 are shown separated from the frame 103 at B. According to this illustrated embodiment, each foot 401, 402, 403 comprises a base element 404 and a threaded projection 405 extending upwardly from the base element 404.
As previously described, each end of the tube of the corner posts 201, 202 and 203 defines a threaded aperture. For example, the lower end 406 of end corner post 201, defines a threaded aperture 407. The threaded projection 405 projecting from the base element 404 of each 401, 402, 403 may be screwed into, and out of, the the lower end 406 of end corner post 201, through the threaded aperture 407 thereof.
As also shown in Figure 4, the frame 103 of the display apparatus 101 may comprise a base 408. The base 408 may be provided in addition to, or as an alternative to, feet. 15.
Figure 5 As illustrated in Figure 5, the frame 103 of the display apparatus 101 is collapsible into a storage condition. This feature advantageously facilitates not only storage but also transportation from one site to another.
In Figure 5, the adjustable cross member 302 is shown removed from between the end corner posts 201, 203, which are shown pivoted relative to the central corner post 202 towards one another to bring the end corner posts 201, 203 close together. The display banner 102 is shown removed from the frame 103. The display banner 102 may be folded or rolled up as desired.
Figure 6 As illustrated in Figure 6, the display apparatus 101 allows convenient * exchange of one display banner with another display banner. The display :.: * apparatus 101 may therefore comprise at least one additional display banner.
Steps in exchanging one display banner with another display banner will now be described. * * **
P72967 At 601, display apparatus 101 is shown with display banner 102 supported in tension by the frame 103 in the display banner presenting condition. As can be seen, the majority of the frame 103 is visually concealed within the display banner 102 At 602, the frame 103 has been adjusted into the display banner receiving condition, allowing the now slackened display banner 102 to be removed from the frame 103. As shown this is achieved simply by the lifting the display banner 102 upwardly, in the direction indicated by arrow A, off the frame 103. At 603, the display banner 102 is shown removed from the frame 103 and the frame 103 is shown still in the display banner receiving condition. At 604, a second, alternative display banner 102B is shown, separate from the frame 103 which is still in the display banner receiving condition. To fit the alternative display banner 102B to the frame 103, the alternative display banner 102B is located over the frame 103, such that the corner posts 201, 202, 203 of the frame 103 are received inside the alternative display banner 102B, as shown at 605. The alternative display banner 102B is then moved downwardly, in the direction indicated by arrow B, fully onto the frame 103. At 606, the frame 103 has been adjusted into the display banner presenting condition, to tighten the sides of the alternative display banner 102B such that the alternative display banner 102B presents substantially planar surfaces between adjacent corner posts of the 2D frame 103.
Thus, the display apparatus described herein allows a user to quickly and simply change the display banner supported on the frame.
The frame of the display apparatus is sufficiently robust to withstand repeated use in one or more different locations. The display banner of the display apparatus is lightweight and relatively cheap, such that a user may conveniently and cost effectively change the visual display of the display apparatus.
Figure 7 An alternative display apparatus 701 is shown in Figure 7. The display apparatus 701 comprises a display banner 102 and a frame 702 for supporting the display banner 102. The display banner 102 comprises a continuous band of P72987 supple material, and the frame 702 is adjustable between a display banner receiving condition, in which the frame 702 is configured to receive the display banner 102 around the frame 702, and a display banner supporting condition, in which the frame 702 is configured to support the display banner 102 in a tensioned condition around the frame 702.
According to this illustrated embodiment, the frame 702 comprises the first,.
second and third corner posts 201 202, 203 and further comprises a fourth additional corner post 703.
The first, second, third and fourth corner posts 201, 202, 203, 703 of the frame 702 are so connected as to allow the distance X between a pair of end corner posts 201, 703 to be adjusted such that the frame 702 is adjustable between: a display banner receiving condition, in which the pair of end corner posts 201, 703 are closer together and the frame 702 is configured to receive the display banner 102 around the frame 702, and a display banner supporting condition, in which the pair of end corner posts 201, 703 are wider apart and the frame 702 is configured to support the display banner 102 in a tensioned condition around the frame 702. In the shown arrangement, the frame 702 comprises a brace member 704 that extends between the second corner post 202 and the fourth corner post 703.
The display banner 102 presents four substantially planar sides when supported by the frame 702 when in the display banner supporting condition.
Thus, as can be seen in this Figure, when the frame 702 is in the display banner supporting condition, it has a diamond, or square, shape. In this embodiment, the display banner 102 presents four substantially planar sides of substantially equal length V when supported by the frame 702 when in the display banner supporting condition.
It is to be appreciated that the frame of a display apparatus as described herein may comprise any suitable type of adjustable length cross member. In an embodiment, the adjustable cross member comprises an over-centre linkage arm, which is movable between an unc!amped condition and a clamped condition. The over-centre linkage arm comprises a pair of arm elements, the inner ends of which are pivotably connected. In use, the outer ends of the arm *0 P72987 elements are pivotably connected to the frame. The over-centre linkage arm thus has three pivot points along its length. The over-centre linkage arm is adjustable between an unclamped condition in which the outer ends of the pair of arm portions are movable towards and away from each other about the central pivot point, and a clamped condition in which the pair of arm portions are locked to maintain a fixed length of the over-centre linkage arm.
It is to be appreciated that a display banner of display apparatus as described herein presents a plurality of sides when supported by the frame in a tensioned condition, and that each of those sides of the display banner may present a display that is the same as, or is different from, another or all of the other sides of the display banner.
The size of the frame, and of each display banner, of the display apparatus, may be any suitable size. In an example, the frame is approximately 2m tall. In use, the frame may support more than one display banner.
The frame of the display apparatus described may be manufactured from any suitable material or combination of materials, and using any suitable process or combination of processes. In an embodiment, the frame of the display apparatus is manufactured using at least one metal material. In an example, the frame of the display apparatus is manufactured using aluminium tubing, which is powder coated for an improved finish.
The display banner of the display apparatus described may be manufactured from any suitable material or combination of materials, and using any suitable process or combination of processes. In an embodiment, the display banner is manufactured from a polyester material, which is knitted into the form of a sheet, the ends of which are then sewn together to form a tube. The display banner may have any suitable colouration, involving a single or a plurality of different colours. The display banner may present any suitable finish. The display banner may carry any suitable graphics. Graphics may be applied to the display banner by any suitable process.
The display apparatus described herein may be used in any suitable environment, for any suitable purpose. For example, the display apparatus may be used in a retail environment to display product information or promotional P72987 offers, or may be used in a transport hub to act as a gathering point or as a sign post.
It is to be appreciated that constructional, dimensional and aesthetic features of the display apparatus described herein may vary between applications1 and that uses of the display apparatus described herein may also vary between applications. * * * * * . * .. * . . ** . * . 4**

Claims (20)
- Claims 1. Display apparatus comprising a display banner and a frame, said display banner comprising a continuous band of supple material, and said frame configured to support said display banner in a tensioned condition; said frame comprising first, second and third corner posts so connected as to allow the distance between a pair of end corner posts to be adjusted such that the frame is adjustable between: a display banner receiving condition, in which said pair of end corner posts are closer together and said frame is configured to receive the display banner around said frame, and a display banner supporting condition, in which said pair of end corner posts are wider apart and said frame is configured to support said display banner in a tensioned condition around said frame.
- 2. Display apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein said frame comprises only said first, second and third corner posts, and said display banner presents three substantially planar sides when supported by said frame in said display banner supporting condition.
- 3. Display apparatus as claimed in claim 2, wherein said display banner presents three substantially planar sides of substantially equal length when supported by said frame in said display banner supporting condition.
- 4. Display apparatus as claimed in claim 2 or claim 3, wherein each of said pair of end corner posts is pivotably connected to the third corner post by at least one cross member. * .. * * . ** .
- 5. Display apparatus as claimed in claim 4, wherein said frame comprises at least one adjustable length cross member configured to extendSP72987 between said pair of end corner posts such that adjusting the adjustable length cross member adjusts the distance between the pair of end corner posts.
- 6. Display apparatus as claimed in claim 5, wherein said adjustable length cross member comprises a tube, an externally threaded rod rotatable within said tube, and an internally threaded adjustment knob rotatable along said externally threaded rod.
- 7. Display apparatus as claimed in claim 5 or claim 6, wherein each of said pair of end corner posts defines an aperture for receiving an end of the or each at least one adjustable length cross member therein.
- 8. Display apparatus as claimed in any of claims 5 to 7, wherein said adjustable length cross member is removable from said pair of end corner posts.
- 9. Display apparatus as claimed in claim 1 wherein said frame further comprises an additional fourth corner post, and said display banner presents four substantially planar sides when said frame is in said display banner supporting condition.
- 10. Display apparatus as claimed in claim 9, wherein said display banner presents four substantially planar sides of substantially equal length when said frame is in said display banner supporting condition.
- 11. Display apparatus as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein said : * frame further comprises a plurality of feet, one for each corner post. * .
