Embodiments of the invention will now be described by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a first embodiment of a securing arrangement; Figure 2 is a front view of the securing arrangement shown in Figure 1; Figure 3 is a view along the lines Ill-Ill in Figure 2; Figure 4 is a front view of a hand rail arrangement showing the securing arrangement in use; Figure 5 is a view along the lines V-V in Figure 4; Figure 6 is a view similar to Figure 1 of a second embodiment of a securing arrangement; and Figure 7 is a view similar to Figure 5 of the securing arrangement shown in Figure 6.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a securing arrangement 10 for securing a first article, which may comprise a first planar article, such as a kick plate 110 to a second article which may comprise a second planar article, such as an infill panel 112. The kick plate 110 and the infill panel 112 form part of a handrail arrangement (see Figures 4 and 5) which is described below in more detail.
The securing arrangement 10 is in the form of a clamping device and comprises a substantially U shaped mounting portion 12 and a projecting portion 14 extending from the U shaped mounting portion 12. The securing arrangement 10 is formed from a substantially flat plate from which the projecting portion 14 is first cut.
The plate is then deformed around a forming member to provide the substantially U shaped mounting portion 12, from which the projecting portion 14 extends. The angle at which the projecting portion 14 extends from the U shaped mounting portion 12 is determined by the use to which the securing arrangement 10 is to be put, as would be understood by those skilled in the art. n
The U shaped mounting portion 12 comprises opposed first and second arms forming the U. The arms are in the form of respective first and second mounting members 16, 18 to receive the kick plate 110 therebetween. The first mounting member 16 defines a threaded opening 20, and a threaded clamping member 22, in the form of a screw, such as a grub screw, can be threadably received in the threaded opening 20. The U shaped mounting portion 12 and the clamping member 22 together constitute a clamping means.
As can be seen from Figure 5, when the kick plate 110 is received between the first and second mounting members 16, 18, the threaded clamping member 22 can be screwed into the threaded opening 20 to engage the kick plate 110.
The second mounting member 18 constitutes a reaction member to provide a force against the kick plate 110 in reaction to the force applied thereto by the clamping member 22. Thus, by screwing the clamping member 22 into the threaded opening so that the kick plate 110 is tightly engaged, the kick plate 110 is clamped between the clamping member 22 and the second mounting member 18.
The first and second mounting members 16, 18 are connected to each other by two curved connecting members 24. The projecting portion 14 is in the form of a tongue extending from the first mounting member 16 between the two connecting members 24.
As can be seen from Figures 1 and 2, an aperture 25 is defined by the U shaped mounting portion 12, in the second mounting member 18, and between the two connecting members 24, which are provided on opposite sides of the aperture 25.
The aperture 25 is formed by the cutting of the projecting portion 14 from the U shaped mounting portion 12.
In the embodiment shown in Figures 1 to 5, the projecting portion 14 extends from the first mounting member 16 across the U shaped mounting portion 12. The projecting portion extends from the first mounting member at an obtuse angle.
The projecting portion 14 is provided to allow the securing arrangement to be attached to the inf ill panel 112. The projecting portion 14 defines an aperture 32, the purpose of which is described below.
S
The infill panel 112 comprises a rectangular frame 114 and a wire mesh arrangement 116 held within the frame 114. The frame 114 comprises upper and lowerframe members 114A and 1143, and opposite sideframe members 114C and 114D. The mesh arrangement 116 comprises a plurality of wires 118, or other thin elongate members, arranged horizontally and vertically, and defining gaps 120 therebetween.
The projecting portion 14 is attached to an attaching means 122 which, in turn, is attached to the infill panel 112. The attaching means 122 comprises a U shaped clip 124, a bolt 126 and a nut 127 threadably mounted on the bolt 126.
The U shaped clip 124 is arranged around the lower frame member 1143 of the frame 114 in one of the gaps 120. The U shaped clip 124 has a pair of substantially flat arm members 128 which extends substantially parallel to each other. The arm members 128 form the arms of the U shaped clip 124. When the U shaped clip 124 is arranged around the lower frame member 114B, the lower frame member 114B is received between the arm members 128.
Each of the arm members 128 defines an aperture 130, which are aligned with each other. The projecting portion 14 of the securing arrangement 10 is received between the arm members 128 so that both of the apertures 130 are aligned with the aperture 32 in the projecting portion 14.
The bolt 126 is inserted through the apertures 130, 132 and the nut 127 is threadably mounted on the bolt 126 and tightened thereon thereby attaching the U shaped clip 124 to the projecting portion 14 of the securing arrangement 10.
Figure 4 shows an example of a hand rail arrangement 100, which comprises a walkway 140, upstanding elongate support members 142 attached to the walkway 140, and a hand rail (not shown) extending through gripping portions (not shown) at the top of the support members 142. Walkways of the type so described are common, and the construction of such walkways 140 would be understood by the person skilled in the art. C)
A kick plate 110 is attached to the support members 142 by suitable clamps 150. An example of a suitable clamp 150 for attaching the kick plate 110 to the support members 142 is described in published patent application No. GB2480549.
An infill panel 112 is attached to the kick plate 110 by the securing arrangement 10, as described above. The infill panel 112 is also attached to the support members 142 and, if desired, can be attached to the handrail.
As can be seen from Figure 4, the infill panel 112 is also attached to each of the support members by suitable attaching assemblies 152, known in the art.
There is thus described a securing arrangement 10 for securing an infill panel 112 to a kick plate 110. The position of the securing arrangement 10 on the kick plate 110 is not dictated by the position of any holes drilled in the kick plate 110. The securing arrangement 10 can be mounted anywhere along the kick plate 110, thereby ensuring that the securing arrangement 10 can be attached to the lower frame member 11 4B of the infill panel 112 without difficulty.
Various modifications can be made without departing from the scope of the invention. For example, the connecting members 24 do not need to be curved; they could be straight, angled or any other suitable shape, which may be determined by the shape of the kick plate 110.
In a further modification, the infill panel does not need to be rectangular; it could be any other suitable shape. Also, the infill panel could be in the form of a perforated plate, instead of being formed of a mesh held within a frame..
A further modification is that the angle at which the projecting portion 14 extends from the first mounting member 16 can be varied depending upon the situation in which the securing arrangement 10 is to be used. Figures 6 and 7 show an embodiment of a securing arrangement, generally designated bA, having such a modification. The features of the securing arrangement 10 are given the same reference numerals as the corresponding features of the securing arrangement 10 shown in Figures 1 to 5.
The securing arrangement 1OA differs has a projecting portion 14A, which extends from the first mounting member 16 at an obtuse angle in a direction away from the U shaped mounting portion 12. This differs from the projecting portion 14 of the securing arrangement 10, which extends across the U shaped mounting portion 12.
With the securing arrangement 1OA shown in Figures 6 and 7, the threaded clamping member 22 engages the opposite face of the kick plate 110 to that engaged by the clamping member 22 of the securing arrangement 10 shown in Figures ito 5.
In another modification, the projecting portion 14 or 14A can be attached to the U shaped mounting portion 16, for example by welding. Such attachment would obviate the need to cut the projecting portion 14 or 14A from the U shaped mounting portion 16.
