The body 2 has an operating pin 4 extending from its base for engaging and opening a self-sealing valve 14 in the bayonet fitting 10 and a locking member 5 for securing the closure member 1 in place.

Description

Gas Bayonet Fitting Closure Member
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a bayonet type gas filling closure member particularly for use in temporarily sealing off gas cooker connection fillings.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Gas cookers are generally connected to a gas supply by way of a flexible gas hose having a bayonet filling configured to attach to a complementary fitting on the fixed gas pipework provided with a self-sealing gas valve. The bayonet filling is configured to open the valve to provide a gas supply to the cooker.
:. The self-sealing nature of thegas valve on the fitting allows for easy * temporary removal of the cooker for cleaning, decorating and the like. ** S
However current gas regulations do not consider such self-sealing fittings S.....
* to be sufficiently secure for any semi-permanent removal of the cooker such as 15 for example where a property is to be empty for an indeterminate period between *5* occupiers. Basic blanking plugs are available but these are principally to prevent dirt and contaminant ingress to the fitting and are unsuitable for semi-permanent fitting being insecure by virtue of having a simple twist to lock/unlock operation.
Providing a secondary sealing cap on the filling does not provide a solution either as with the self-sealing nature of the main valve such a fitting will not normally be subjected to the mains gas pressure and so cannot be pressure tested on fitment as required by the regulations.
Accordingly when gas cookers are removed and no new appliance or reconnection is to be made at the same time under current regulations the bayonet fitting and related pipework are generally removed completely and the gas supply pipe is capped to seal it off. When a new cooker is to be fitted* subsequently the process has to be reversed and a new bayonet fitting attached.
Obviously this procedure is inconvenient for an incoming new occupier of a property, can be costly and can lead to disturbance of home decor such as any tiled areas adjacent the cooker. Essentially whenever the situation arises where a cooker has to be disconnected leaving a time gap until a new cooker is to be connected there can be quite substantial costs in the removal and subsequent :. refitting of gas pipes and gas fittings.
*..s.. * *
It is an object of at least one aspect of the present invention to obviate or * mitigate the aforementioned problems by proposing a non-intrusive solution to : closing off the gas supply at the bayonet connection on removal of a gas cooker. * .* *
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a gas bayonet fitting closure member comprising a main body for effecting a seal once fitted in a bayonet filling said body having an extension member extending from the base thereof for engaging and opening a self-sealing valve in said bayonet fitting and a locking member for securing the closure in place.
Preferably the locking member comprises a threaded locking screw on the closure member arranged to engage the bayonet fitting when moved from a first, unlocked, position to a second, locked position.
Preferably also the closure member includes means for receiving and retaining a spare 0 ring seal for the bayonet fitting.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of sealing a gas cooker bayonet fitting using a gas bayonet fitting closure member of the first aspect of the invention.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of * example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a side view of a gas bayonet fitting closure member according **.e** * to an embodiment of the present invention; *:*. 15 Figure 2 is a top plan view of the gas bayonet filling closure member of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a side view of a gas bayonet fitting suitable for use with the gas bayonet fitting closure member of Figure 1; and Figure 4 is a top plan view of the gas bayonet lifting of Figure 3.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION
Referring to the drawings a gas bayonet filling closure member of the present invention is shown generally at 1.
The gas bayonet fitting closure member I comprises a main stepped cylindrical brass body member 2 having a pair of diametrically opposed slots 3 and sized to fit into a gas bayonet fitting 10 having a socket 11 provided with an 0 ring seal 12 for receiving the body member 2 and a pair of diametrically opposed tabs 13 for engaging with the slots 3. A valve operating pin 4 extends from the base of the body member 2.
In use the gas bayonet fitting closure member 1 is used to seal off the gas bayonet filling 10 following disconnection of a standard gas cooker hose fitting (not shown).
The body member 2 is pushed into the socket 11 so that the pin 4 engages and opens a sprung valve 14 in the base of the socket 11. By turning * the closure member 1 in a clockwise direction the body member 2 is retained in *** the socket 11 by virtue of the tabs 13 engaging with the slots 3. A gas tight seal is *s.** * provided by virtue of the 0 ring 12. A threaded locking pin 5 has an internal : 15 hexagonal socket 6 allowing it to be tightened to lock the closure member I in place in the bayonet filling 10.
As the seal between the closure member I and the bayonet filling 10 is exposed to the mains gas pressure in the pipework it can be pressure tested in the normal way and the closure member thus effectively seals off the supply and can be left in place until such time as it is desired to connect a new or replacement cooker to the supply at which point it is a simple mailer to remove the closure member I from the bayonet filling 10 by reversing the filling procedure.
As the main gas pipe and fitting are at no time disturbed there is no need to purge the gas pipework as would otherwise be the case.
As an added feature a spare 0 ring seal 7 can readily be accommodated in the closure member Thus the costly, inconvenient and time consuming task of removing the gas bayonet fitting and capping the supply pipework whenever a gas cooker supply is disconnected and then restoring the pipework and fittings when reconnection is required is avoided.
Whilst specific embodiments of the present invention have been described above, it will be appreciated that departures from the described embodiments *0.0 * may still fall within the scope of the present invention. ** * * . * * *. *
