Abstract

A kettle (15) includes a solenoid switch relay 3, controlling power to the kettle element 14. When push button switch 6 is pressed momentarily, solenoid 7 is actuated operating the relay switch. Normally off position may be achieved by momentarily pressing the off switch 9 at any time during the heating process. The kettle may include thermal protection devices in the control circuit such as boil dry thermostat 10 and steam thermostat 11. The kettle handle (16) incorporates a panel arrangement including momentary button switches 6 & 9 and indicator lamps 4 & 12.

Description

Relay kettle This invention relates to a method of controlling an electric kettle by means of a solenoid switch relay and push button switches, with indicator lamps and thermostats.
Because the power to the kettle element is interrupted by a solenoid switch the controls and indicators operate on a low current. The elimination of rocking and lever switches reduces the possibility of mechanical breakdown The invention will now be described solely by way of operating instructions and with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 shows a schematic control diagram for a push button solenoid switch operated relay kettle.
Figure 2 shows a front elevation of a kettle 15 fitted with push button switches, solenoid switch relay and indicator lamps in the handle 16.
Figure 3 shows a side elevation of a kettle with panel arrangement of push button switches and indicator lamps.
In figure 1, with mains on there is a control feed from live terminal 1 through the normally closed contact 2 of the relay 3 illuminating the "blue" mains on standby indicator lamp 4, returning to the neutral terminal 5.
When the push button on switch 6 is pressed momentarily a live feed passes through the switch activating the solenoid 7 and operating the relay switch. As the normally open contact B closes a live feed passes through the off switch 9, boil dry thermostat 10, steam thermostat 11, and the contact 8, illuminating the "red" power on indicator lamp 12, at the same time putting a feed from contactS through the solenoid 7 locking it on.
At the same time the normally closed contact? opens, extinguishing the "blue" lamp 4 and the normally open contact 13 closes putting power onto the kettle element 14.
Once water is boiled the steam thermostat 11 opens breaking the interlock circuit to the solenoid 7 and the relay switch reverts to its normal position extinguishing the "red" lamp 12, stopping power to the kettle element 14 and illuminating the "blue" lamp 4.
This normally off position "standby" can also be achieved by momentarily pressing the off switch Sat any time during the heating process.

  1. Claims 1. A relay kettle controlled by a solenoid switch.
  2. 2. A relay kettle according to claim 1, operated by momentary push button switches.
  3. 3. A relay kettle according to claim 2, in which the panel arrangement includes indicator lamps to determine the kettle status.
  4. 4. A relay kettle according to any preceding claims, in which the control circuit incorporates thermal protection devices such as boil dry thermostat and steam thermostat.
