Abstract

A motorized grass trimmer comprises a handle 2 and shaft 3 attached to a grass cutting unit 10, the unit being rotatable from a horizontal to a vertical position by means of foot lever 7. The shaft 3 is height adjustable by means of lever 4.The cutting unit has a safety guard 6, 8 which guards the cutting unit when both horizontal and vertical positions. The trimmer also has an upper arm support 1 which allows the trimmer to be used with only one arm/hand

Description

Light Weight One Handed Grass Trimmer This invention relates to a one handed grass trimmer that allows you to trim grass in the horizontal edging mode and vertical trimming mode.
The use of a conventional grass trimmer is usually a two handed operation where one hand is crossed over the other for grip and control. This can cause back discomfort with the slight twisting and also without the convenience of height adjustment. You would also have to bend down or lift the trimmer to change from horizontal to vertical trimming mode. To overcome these problems my invention allows you to hold the trimmer one handed by means of the handle and arm support for stability then by means of a foot operated lever be able to change the culling action from horizontal to the vertical cutting mode without bending.

In Figure 1. Front Elevation -shows shaft 3. attached to a lower base 10. with a hinged bracket to allow base 10. to rotate 90 degrees going from horizontal culling position to the vertical position as shown in figure 2. Also incorporating an upper arm support I with a control handle 2. which incorporates an on/off switch that stops automatically when released. Shafi 3. is of hollow construction allowing top half of shaft to slide inside the lower half of shaft allowing for height adjustment by means of lever 4.
Bottom of shaft 3 is also attached to a hinged base 10 incorporating motor 5 Figure 2. Side Elevation shows trimmer in its upright position with motor 5. which incorporates a foot operated lever and locking mechanism 7. Also showing gUard 8. in the upright position to allow for top trimming as shown by the forward direction of the arrow with safety guard 6. in down position. Figure 2. shows the trimmer in the side cutting mode with safety guard 6 in place and guard 8 in the upright position.
The light weight trimmer is designed to be used one handed by taking hold of control handle 2. and resting the upper arm into cradled support 1 at the top of shaft 3 allowing free movement. This is now ready for horizontal trimming as shown by the direction of arrow shown in Side Elevation view. To change from top cutting to side cutting you simply push down foot operated lever 7. which in turn releases locking mechanism allowing the base 10. to rotate 90 degrees to lock into the vertical position as shown in Figure 2. allowing safety guard 8 and 6 to lock into position. By reversing the action it then reverts back to the horizontal trimming position.
The design allows the operator to trim one handed allowing them to be in the upright position, with adjustable handle set at chosen height and also without the need to bend down to change from horizontal to vertical trimming mode, by use of the foot operated lever.
Due to the lightweight design and ease of use, this allows someone partially disabled or elderly to use this grass trimmer

  1. U 3.Claims.1.A light weight one handed grass trimmer for cutting both horizontally and vertically, switching from horizontal to vertical cutting by means of a foot operated lever with automatic guarding in both settings to protect the operator.
