Abstract

A padlock (PB) has an extension bracket (EXB) fixed to it, the shackle of the padlock embracing a cup/body (C/B) of a quick release skewer or sitting between the cup/body and the lever (LVR) of the quick release skewer when the lever is in the closed position such that the wheel cannot be removed from the bicycle until the lock assembly is unlocked and removed. The extension bracket (EXB) may be fixed to the padlock by chemical bonding, welding or by mechanical means.

Description

Description
This invention relates to the bicycle quick release mechanism and more particularly to a lock assembly for a quick release mechanism to prevent wheel removal and theft.
Many bicycles have quick release mechanisms on the wheels which allow the wheel to be removed quickly and easily without the use of any tools. It is necessary, therefore, to secure the wheels of the bicycle that have such quick release mechanisms, as well as the frame of the bicycle,to prevent theft when the bicycle is left unattended.
Cables and chains with combination or key locks can be fairly easy to cut with tools commonly available to bicycle thieves and are therefore not sufficiently secure for many purposes. High security bicycle locks are generally made of very strong, but expensive material, which makes is difficult to snap cut or torch to gain access to the bicycle. The cost of the material as well as the awkwardness and inconvenience to the rider of having a significantly larger shackle, eliminate the possibility of encompassing the frame and both wheels of the bicycle with such a lock. When using a high security lock one must remove one of the wheels to be locked with the other wheel and frame to a permanent object to ensure proper security. Otherwise a second lock is necessary. It is a considerable inconvenience to follow such a procedure each time the bicycle is left unattended.
It is a principle object of this invention to provide a lock assembly which locks the wheel to the bicycle without interference with the quick release mechanism or with the operation of the bicycle and which does not locking or unlocking each time the bicycle is used, a further object of the invention is to provide a lock assembly which requires no modification to the bicycle. Further objects are to provide a lock assembly which is small, light easy to install and simple to manufacture.
In general the invention features a (PB)padlock with an (EXB)extension bracket fixed to it, the (PS)shackle of the padlock encompasses the (CB)cup/body of the quick release skewer or sits between the (CB)cup/body and the (LVR)lever of the quick release skewer, when the lever is in the closed position.
The (EXB)extension bracket which is fixed to the (LVR)lever side of the padlock, which can be fixed via chemical bonding, welding or by mechanical means, encompasses the (LVR)lever of the quick release skewer, when he lever is in the closed position; whereby the wheel cannot be removed from the bicycle until the lock assembly is unlocked and removed.
To fit the padlock is unlocked with the (KH)key releasing the shackle, the (EXB)extension bracket is then slid over the (LVR)quick release lever and the(PS) padlock shackle is the clipped in position.
The reverse of this operation is adopted to remove the invention.

Claims (2)

  1. Claims 1. A lock assembly for a bicycle wheel quick release mechanism comprising of a padlock and an extension bracket 2. A lock assembly for a bicycle wheel quick release mechanism which is strong and light 3. A lock assembly for a bicycle wheel quick release mechanism which is quick to fit and remains on the bicycle until removal of the wheel is necessary 4. A lock assembly for a bicycle wheel quick release mechanism which requires no modification to the bicycle 5. A lock assembly for a bicycle wheel quick release mechanism which can be used for both enclosed and exposed cam variations of the quick release mechanism 6. An additional attachment maybe fitted to the nut side of the skewer * A thimble which is riveted inside a larger thimble allowing them to rotate independently of each other. The smaller thimble is adhered to the nut preventing grip to remove the nut AMENDMENTS TO THE CLAIMS HAVE BEEN HLED AS FOLLOWS: Claims 1) A lock assembly for a bicycie quick reiease mechanism comprising a padlock, the padlock having an extension bracket secured thereto, the extension bracket being adapted to encompass a lever of a quick release mechanism in use, wherein a shackle portion of the padlock encompasses the quick release mechanism, thereby securing the extension bracket in place on the lever.
  2. 2) A lock assembly for a bicycle quick release mechanism as defined in claim 1, wherein the extension bracket is welded, chemically bonded, mechanically fixed to the padlock, or a part of the padlock housing in its original form. C')
