Abstract

A plumbing diverter component 10 is connectable into a central heating system 42 to selectively bypass a magnetic filter assembly 28 in the system, to permit servicing of the filter assembly 28. The component 10 may contain ball valves.

Description

Plumbing Diverter Component This invention relates to a plumbing diverter component, a central heating system, and a method of operating a central heating system.
Magnetic filters are now often provided in central heating systems to collect ferrous debris which may locate in the system. Such filters are also often arranged to filter out non ferrous debris from the water. Such filters are generally provided upstream of a boiler to prevent metal or other debris from entering the boiler.
Such filters require periodic emptying of debris, and particularly to avoid clogging thereof. Conventionally such filters require the turning off of the heating system to permit emptying or other operations to take place. The filter will generally be connected to the central heating system by two bi-directional valves, which when closed will close off the flow through the central heating system.
Periodically having to turn off the central heating system can be inconvenient, and particularly in commercial premises and institutional situations, such as hospitals, old people's homes or care homes. In the latter instances this can lead to vulnerable end users being without heating during servicing of the filters.
Fill and flush valves are often provided in central heating systems.
These permit selected connection to the system of a fill and flush unit which can remove water from the system, flush the system out, and refill the system.
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a plumbing diverter component, the component comprising a body with an inlet at one end and an outlet at another end, a through passage extending through the body, a first branch passage extending from the body in the vicinity of the inlet, a second branch passage extending from the body in the vicinity of the outlet, a first valve selectively movable between a through position connecting the inlet to the through passage, and a divert position connecting the inlet to the first branch passage, and a second valve selectively movable between a through position connecting the outlet to the passage, and a divert position connecting the outlet to the second branch passage.
The first and second valves may be ball valves.
The first and second branch passages may include connection means at their ends away from the through passage to permit connection to a magnetic filter or other component.
According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided a central heating system, the system including a plumbing diverter component according to any of the preceding three paragraphs, and a magnetic filter connected between the first and second branch passages of the plumbing diverter component.
The magnetic filter may be selectively connected between the first and second branch passages of the plumbing diverter component.
The plumbing diverter component may be located immediately upstream of a boiler in the central heating system.
According to a third aspect of the invention there is provided a method of operating a central heating system, the system being according to any of the preceding three paragraphs, the method including in a normal operation the first and second valves of the plumbing diverter component being in the divert position such that water passes through the magnetic filter, but when it is required to service or otherwise deal with the magnetic filter, the first and second valves are moved to the through position such that water bypasses the magnetic filter, and the system can continue to operate.
A pump may be selectively connected to the first and second branch passages in place of the magnetic filter, to enable the central heating system to be flushed through.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:-Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic side view of a plumbing diverter component according to the invention; Fig. 2 is a similar view to Fig. 1 but with the component attached to a magnetic filter; Fig. 3 is a similar view to Fig. 2 but with the magnetic filter disattached; Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic view of a central heating system according to the invention in a first condition; and Fig. 5 is a similar view to Fig. 4 but with the system in a second condition.
Fig. 1 shows a plumbing diverter component 10 which has a main elongate body 12 with an inlet 14 at a lower end as shown in the drawing, and an outlet 16 at the upper end. Inlet and outlet side branches 18, 20 extend from the body 12 adjacent respectively the inlet and outlet 14, 16. Standard compression fittings are provided on the inlet 14 and outlet 16. A flange is provided on each of the inlet side branch 18 and outlet side branch 20, which flange mounts a conventional 22mm retaining nut 22.
Inlet and outlet three way ball valves 24, 26 are provided respectively at the junctions between the inlet side branch 18 and the body 12, and the outlet side branch 20 and the body 12. The inlet and outlet ball valves 24, 26 are selectively movable between a through position and a divert position. The through position is shown for instance in Fig. 3 where water can pass directly through the body 12, and the side branches 18, 20 are closed. The ball valves 24, 26 are movable to the divert position as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 where the valves 24, 26 respectively connect the inlet 14 to the inlet side branch 18, and the outlet 16 to the outlet side branch 20.
Fig. 2 shows the component 10 connected to a magnetic filter assembly 28, such that in the divert position as shown, water will pass through the inlet 14, into the inlet side branch 18, through the assembly 28, and back out through the outlet side branch 20 and outlet 16.
The assembly 28 includes a body 30 with an inlet 22mm threaded union 32 which can engage with the nut 22 on the inlet side branch 16, and a corresponding outlet 22mm union 34 which can engage with the nut 22 on the outlet side branch 20. The body 30 contains a magnetic filter to separate ferrous material from the water, and may also incorporate a physical filter to separate non ferrous solid material from the water. At the lower end as shown in Fig. 2 a drain valve 36 is provided. At the upper end of the body 30 a removable screw cap 38 is provided with a manual air vent 40 therein.
Fig. 3 shows the filter assembly 28 disconnected from the component 10. In this instance the ball valves 24, 26 are in the through position such that water can continue to flow through the component 10.
Figs. 4 and 5 diagrammatically show a central heating system 42 according to the invention. The system 42 includes a boiler 44 with pipework 46 extending in a loop from a boiler outlet 48 to a boiler inlet 50. A single radiator 52 is shown diagrammatically in the pipework loop 46, but in practice in most instances a number of radiators 52 would be provided, generally connected in series A plumbing diverter component 10 is located in the pipework 46 a short distance from the boiler inlet 50. In Fig. 1 the component has a magnetic filter assembly 28 connected thereto as shown in Fig. 2. In use water from the boiler 44 will pass out through the outlet 48, around the pipework 46 and will then enter the component 10. In the condition shown in Fig. 4 the water will pass through the filter assembly 28 to remove debris therefrom, and will then return to the boiler 44 through the inlet 50 for reheating.
If it is required to service the filter assembly 28, the ball valves 24, 26 can be switched to a through position as shown in Fig. 3 such that water will bypass the filter assembly 28. The filter assembly 28 could then be removed as shown in Fig. 3. Alternatively, with the assembly 28 still in place, the screw cap 38 could be removed to permit debris to be removed from the filter body 30. It could be that a filter cartridge is provided therein which can simply be removed. It may also be required to dose the system 42, for instance with a scale inhibitor, which needs to be located in the filter assembly body 30.
Periodically it is advisable to flush the central heating system 42, and this is illustrated in Fig. 5. In this instance the assembly 28 has been disconnected from the component 10. A fill and flush unit 54 is connected to the component by an outlet hose 56 connecting to the outlet side branch 20, and an inlet hose 58 connecting to the inlet side branch 18. The unit 54 has a pump 60 and a water tank 62. Water can be pumped through the system as shown by the arrows in Fig. 5 from the unit 54 through the component 10, around the system, and back out through the component 10 to the unit 54.
There is thus described a plumbing diverter component, a central heating system, and also a method of operating such a system which provide for a number of advantages. A magnetic filter assembly can be used, but when it is required to remove this assembly, or at least service it, water can readily be diverted by the plumbing diverter component such that the heating system can continue to operate. Debris can then be removed from the assembly and/or dosing of the system can take place. When this is completed water can simply be reconnected to pass through the component.
The component also permits the system to readily be connected to a fill and flush unit without any additional connections or components. The plumbing diverter component is however of conventional plumbing construction, and can thus be inexpensively manufactured for long term maintenance free use.
It is to be realised that a wide range of modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the invention. For instance different valves could be used in the diverter component. The body may take a different form. Items other than the filter assembly and fill and flush unit described could be selectively connected to the component. Different connections could be provided on the component. For instance male threads could be provided on the component, with captive nuts or other connections provided on the filter.
Whilst endeavouring in the foregoing specification to draw attention to those features of the invention believed to be of particular importance it should be understood that the Applicant claims protection in respect of any patentable feature or combination of features hereinbefore referred to and/or shown in the drawings whether or not particular emphasis has been placed thereon.
