The invention relates to a device for use in the location of a cable with respect to a hole or slot formed in an article and thereby allow the location of the cable with the article. The device includes first and second parts which, when brought together, form the device. Cable engagement formations can also be provided which exert a gripping force on the cable.

Description

Device for use with a cable The invention to which this application relates is a device for use with a cable to act as a cable damp and/or grommet for the cable to position the same with regard to either a hole or slot formed in an article and thereby allow the retention of the cable in position in said hole or slot, hereinafter referred to as an aperture, during use of the article and cable. The cable for which the device is provided can be any form of cable such as an electrical cable, data cable, telecommunication cable or the like.
When fitting a cable into position with regard to an article to which the same is to be connected, or through which the cable is required to pass, there is a need to be able to ensure that the cable is positioned as required and then retained in that position during subsequent use of the article so as to ensure that the cable connection is maintained, and also to prevent the cable being worn by relative movement of the cable and article during use. There is therefore a need to ensure that the cable is fixed in position and, furthermore, that the cable can be protected from potential damage which could cause failure of the cable service.
Conventionally, devices which are used to secure cables in position, are provided in many different forms, with the particular form which is used, selected with regard to whether the aperture into which the same is to be fitted is a slot or hole and with regard to the size of cable and/or si2e of aperture with regard to which the same is required to be placed. The number of possible variations of design means that for each fitment of a cable with regard to an article, there are required to be a number of different devices available to be selected and if the appropriate device is not available at the time of fitment of the cable, the work may be delayed or an inappropriate device may have to be used.
Furthermore in certain forms of known devices the cable is required to be passed around a tortuous path by bending, in order to retain the same in position in the device. This bending can cause wear on the cable and/or damage to the interior cores of the same.
A further problem which is experienced is that typically one form of known device is provided of a form to allow the same to be placed into an aperture in the form of a hole while a different form of device is provided to be located in a slot and the same are not interchangeable.
The aim of the present invention is to provide a device which is range taking in as much that the same can be used for the fitment of cables in a range of aperture types. A further aim is to allow the device to be capable of being used with multiple sizes of cable.
In a first aspect of the invention, there is provided a device for use with a cable, said device provided with means to allow the cable to be located with regard to an article, said device incorporating first and second cable locating parts which are selectively movable between a first, open position and a second, closed position in which the cable passes through the device and wherein the device includes engagement means to allow the device to be located with an aperture in the form of a slot or a hole in said article.
Typically the device can be located with the slot by sliding the same along the slot into the required position on the same in order for it to provide the desired function. In one embodiment the location is at the end of the slot or alternatively can be intermediate said end and the opening into the slot.
In one embodiment a number of devices can be slid in sequence into position along the slot.
Typically the device is located in the hole by pressing the same into position.
Typically, the device includes location means which allow the location of the device, when in the closed position, with the aperture. In one embodiment two sets of location means are provided, a first set to allow location of the device with the aperture in the form of a slot and a second set to allow location of the device with the aperture in the form of a hole.
In one embodiment the first and second sets of location means are provided on the same side walls of the device or alternatively, the first set of location means are formed on first and second opposing side walls of the device and the second set of location means are formed on third and fourth opposing side walls of the device.
In one embodiment the first set of location means comprise at least one guide means on each of the said first and second side walls. In one embodiment a number of spaced guide means are provided on each of the side walls in order to allow the position of the device with regard to the article to be selected.
Typically the device is provided with means to prevent or limit rotation of the device with respect to the slot or hole in which the same is fitted.
In one embodiment the second set of location means on each side wall includes a first portion which lies on one side of the sheet material of the article and a second, clip portion which lies on the other side of the sheet material of the article. In one embodiment the location means also include a locking portion to be received in a recess in an edge of the aperture to prevent rotation of the device with respect to the hole.
Typically, the first and second parts are engageable to form an aperture through which the cable passes. Typically, engagement means are provided to allow the first and second parts to be retained in the closed position, and in one embodiment these are formed on opposing side walls of the first and second parts.
In one embodiment when the parts are in the closed position, at least one of the parts exerts a gripping or clamping force on the cable to such an extent to at least partially deform the cable and thereby retain the device in contact with that portion of the cable during subsequent use and prevent or minimise relative movement of the cable with respect to the device during subsequent use. The device can also act to provide protection from the thin wall section of the article with which the device is located.
In one embodiment the device can be adapted to allow the same to be range taking in terms of allowing at least two cable sizes to be used in conjunction with the device.
In one embodiment the size of aperture in the device is formed by positioning the first and second parts into the closed position. In another embodiment the size of the aperture of the device is reduced by placing a cable engagement formation in the device in the closed position.
S
In one embodiment, the device is provided with an elongate member which depends from at least one of the parts of the device, said elongate member provided with one or more cable engagement formations to be selectively positioned within the device when the device is moved to the dosed position to allow the cable to be contacted by the cable engagement formation.
Typically the cable engagement formation is moved into position when the device is being used with smaller si2e cables to ensure that the same are retained in position in the device. Typically, the said elongate member is positioned when the parts are in the open position with it's longitudinal axis substantially parallel with the longitudinal axis of the path of the cable through the device and when the parts are moved to the dosed position the elongate member is folded to allow the cable engagement formation to be located within the hole formed for the cable to pass through the device and hence allow the same to engage iith the cable.
Typically, the device is provided of a form to allow the same to receive and retain cables within a range of cable dimensions with regard to the cross-sectional area of the same.
In one embodiment, the first and second parts are joined together by a connecting member which allows relative movement of the first and second parts between the open and closed positions.
In one embodiment, the connecting member can be detached once the first and second parts are located in the closed position or, alternatively, the connecting member is held in a position once the parts are in the closed position and in one embodiment the connecting member can be substantially hidden from view within the article to which the device is fitted.
Specific embodiments of the invention are now described with reference to the accompanying drawings; wherein Figures 1 -3 illustrate views of the device in an open position.
Figures 4 -12 and 17-18 illustrate the device having been brought to a closed position; Figures 13 -16 illustrate the device fitted to a cable; Figures 19 -21 illu strate the device fitted with regard to an aperture in the form of a hole in an article in the form of a panel; and Figures 22 -24 illustrate the device fitted with regard to an aperture in the form of a slot in an article.
The device 2 in accordance with the invention can be provided as a cable grip which allows the clamping of the cable with the device and/or a grommet in which the cable is guided through the article and does not contact the article.
Preferably the device is manufactured using a single shot plastics moulding process and provides cable management for a variety of cable sizes and types in a variety of aperture applications as either or both of a cable grommet or cable clamp. When acting as a grommet the device insulates and protects the cable by preventing the cable from contacting the edge of the articles to which the same is fitted. The device can also be provided to act as a cable clamp to clamp the cable to provide retention against pull-out forces.
Referring now to Figures 1-3 there is provided the device 2 shown in an open position. The device includes first and second parts 4,6 which are provided with a connecting member 8 which has sufficient flexibility to allow the parts to be moved together to a closed position as shown in the remaining Figures. Each of the parts includes a portion 10,12 respectively which, when the parts are brought together to the dosed position, are located around the cable and form a hole 22 through which the cable passes. Each of the parts 4,6 also includes engagement means 14,16 respectively which allow the parts to be engaged together and thereby be retained in the closed position. The parts also include location formations 18,20 respectively which allow the device, when closed, to be located with an aperture in the form of a slot in an article. As shown in Figure 1-3, the location formations in this embodiment include a first set of grooves 1 8',20' which allow the location of the device at a first position with respect to the slot and a second set of grooves 1 8'',20'' which allow location of the device at a second position with respect to the slot. The parts also include location formations 19,21 respectively which allow the device, when closed, to be located with an aperture in the form of a hole in an article.
The connecting member 8 can be folded to allow the parts 4,6 to be brought together and fitted around a cable. The Figures 4-7 illustrate the parts 4,6 in the closed position with the connecting member still attached whilst FigLires 8-12 ill ustrate the parts 4,6 having been brought together to the closed position with the connecting member 8 removed.
The engagement means in the form of the clips 14,16 hold the device around the cable, such as when inserting the device into the aperture in the article as shown in Figures 2,3 and 7. This ensures the device parts are retained in position and hence makes the handling of the same easier for the operator.
The elongate member 24 includes a cable engagement formation 26 and the elongate member is selectively foldable about the portion 28 to move from the open position shown in Figures 1-3 to the closed position shown in Figures 4-12 so that the engagement formation 26 can provide a reduced cable space in the hole 22 so that the device can be used to locate smaller diameter power cables and in one embodiment act as a cable grommet for small diameter data cables. The cables can also be attached to the portion 30 of the elongate member to provide further support for the same and allow the cable to be retained in position with relatively low clamp pressure.
When the device is to be used for the clamping of larger diameter cables the elongate member 24 can be retained in the open position shown in Figures 1-3 or can be broken off so that the available hole 22 in the device when in the closed position is available.
Figures 13-16 illustrate the device in the closed position with a cable 32 passing therethrough and retained in position, in Figures 13 and 15 using the additional cable engagement formation 26 for a smaller diameter cable and, in Figures 14 and 16, without the additional cable engagement formation 26.
The device according to the invention can be fitted in article apertures in the form of both holes in flat sheet (sheet metal or plastic) and open-ended slots in sheet metal, (plastic or aluminium extrusion) with the slots typically subsequently closed off by end mouldings.
Figures 17-21 show the device 2 which has been snap fitted as indicated by arrow 35 into an hole aperture 34 provided in a sheet material 36 and illustrates the manner in which the location formations 19,21 engage with the sides 37, 39 of the aperture 34 to retain the device. Each of the location formations include a top lip 41 to lie on one side of the sheet material 36 and a ramped clip portion 43 formed by the location formations 19,21 in combination, to lie to the underside of the sheet material 36 as shown in Figure 18, with the dip being placed into position during the press fitting of the device into the hole 34. Each of the location formations 19,21 also include protrusion portion 45 which is ocated to be retained in respective recesses 47 in the hole 34 such that when retained in position, rotation of the device with respect to the hole aperture 34 is prevented.
Figures 22-24 show the device 2 inserted into a slot 48, in this embodiment in an aluminium extrusion 51. The opposing edges 50,52 of the slot are provided in this embodiment in engagement with the respective guide tracks I 8',20' on the side walls of the device which allow the device to be slid along the slot into a desired location along the slot. In this case the guide tracks are provided with a flat face so as to engage with the respective edge 50,52 and thereby prevent rotation of the device with respect to the slot.
Thus in accordance with the invention there is provided a device which can be used for fitment in a slot or hole and thereby avoid the need for the provision of different types of devices to be used. Furthermore by providing the device as illustrated a grip or clamping action can be exerted on the cable passing through the device without the need for the cable to be distorted excessively, thereby avoiding stress on the inner cores of the cable.
