Abstract

A hazard warning light 3 is attached to a mast 2 which is anchored by a magnetic base unit 1. This assembly is placed on the roof of an immobilised vehicle and connected to a power source.

Description

Hazard warning beacon This invention relates to road safety and its objective is to reduce injuries and fatalities.
When a motor vehicle has broken down or become immobilised on the roadside there is a significant risk of a collision with approaching vehicles.
Most vehicles already have hazard warning lights but their effectiveness is limited by their relatively low position above ground level, thus oncoming vehicles may not be alerted to the hazardous situation that they are approaching.
To overcome this problem, the present invention proposes a hazard warning light that is attached to a mast which is anchored by a magnetic base unit. This assembly is placed on the roof of the immobilised vehicle and connected to a power source such as a cigar lighter.
The main advantage of this novel invention is that the elevated position of the hazard warning light will significantly improve its visibility, therefore giving an early warning of a hazardous situation to approaching vehicles.
Another advantage of this invention is that the hazard warning beacon is securely coupled to the vehicle by the magnetic base unit, thus eliminating the possibility of it falling over.
Preferably, the magnetic base unit has a rechargeable battery.
Preferably, the magnetic base unit has a solar energy panel.
Preferably, the magnetic base unit has a circuit board.
Preferably, the magnetic base unit has GPS/cell phone technology.
Preferably, the mast is telescopic.
Preferably, the hazard warning light is an LED. type.
Preferably, the magnetic base unit has an on/off switch.
The invention will now be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows the preferred embodiment, Figure 2 shows the hazard warning beacon deployed on a motor vehicle.
In figure 1, a hazard warning light 3 is attached to a mast 2 which is anchored by a magnetic base unit 1 which has a rubber gasket 11 on its underside to prevent slippage and damage to vehicle paintwork. The hazard warning light 3 is connected to the vehicle's cigar lighter via the flexible cable 9 and plug 10. Power can also be supplied from the rechargeable battery 4 or solar panel 7.Power management is controlled by circuit board 5. The emergency services can be alerted by the GPS/cell phone device 6. The hazard warning light 3 is activated by the on/off switch 8. The solar panel 7 can also recharge the battery 4.
During normal operation of the vehicle, the hazard warning beacon is stored in the boot.
In its preferred embodiment the hazard warning beacon is deployed and retracted manually.
However, the scope of the invention includes a variation which could facilitate automated deployment and retraction. This could be achieved, for example, by attaching the hazard warning light to a motorised telescopic mast. This variation, however, would be more suitable for factory fitment during the vehicle production stage.
This invention is not limited to what has been described and illustrated here and may be varied considera bly without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
