Description

Sheet Metal Part for Attaching a Handle to a Motor Vehicle Roof and the Manufacturing Method of such a Sheet Metal Part The invention relates to a sheet metal part according to the preamble of claim 1 and a manufacturing method for such a sheet metal part according to claim 5.
Such a sheet metal part by means of which a handle is attached to the passenger compartment roof of a motor vehicle has been described, for example, in DE 10 2009 048 338 Al. These sheet metal parts comprise a mounting section on the roof side for their attachment to the vehicle roof as well as a mounting section for the grab handle.
Usually such sheet metal parts are made of steel alloys due to their high load transfer properties, ensuring a specifically stable attachment of the handle to the vehicle roof.
Consequentially, these sheet metal parts usually have a comparatively high weight.
It is therefore the task of the present invention to develop a sheet metal part and an appropriate manufacturing method for the aforementioned part to ensure a lightweight but still stable attachment of a handle to a vehicle roof.
This task is accomplished by a sheet metal part according to claim 1 as well as a manufacturing method according to claim 5. Advantageous embodiments of the invention * are indicated in the dependent claims.
In order to develop a sheet metal part of the aforementioned kind, featuring considerably less weight compared to the state of the art, while featuring a stable attachment of the handle to the vehicle roof, according to the invention, a sheet metal part made of an aluminium alloy which is at least partially coined, in particular where the handle is mounted, is provided. Coining is a form of precision stamping compactly the material locally in the cold state, reducing surface grain size and work S...
: hardening the surface. This results in the creation of a sheet metal part with less weight, *J but which, due to its coined sections, ensures a locally enhanced strength, for example in the area where the handle is attached to the sheet metal part, thus leading to a part with a strength similar to a sheet steel part.
-It is readily appreciated that any sections of the sheet metal part can be coined depending on the areas where high loads usually occur or where a thinner material layer is required for other reasons.
In a further advantageous embodiment of the invention, a mounting opening in the material where the handle is to be attached to the sheet metal part is provided, the mounting opening being framed at least partially by at least one coined section. This results in a stable attachment of the handle to the part due to the densified material around the mounting opening. A further aspect of the invention features densified areas on opposite sides of the mounting opening, especially where the handle is to be attached, thus leading to a symmetrical attachment of the handle.
The advantages described in relation to the sheet metal part and its favourable embodiments also apply to its manufacturing method and vice versa.
Further advantages, features and details of the invention are detailed in the following description of preferred embodiments with reference to the drawings.
The drawings show in Fig.1 a perspective top view of a sheet metal part according to the invention facing a vehicle roof with a handle attached to it; Fig. 2a an enlarged perspective top view of a part of a mounting section with a handle attached to the sheet metal part; * * * * ** *...: Fig. 2b another enlarged and perspective top view of a part of the mounting section, * I where the handle attached to the sheet metal part; * III... * I

Fig.1 shows a perspective top view of a sheet metal part 10 used as a mounting device for attaching a grab handle 12 to the roof of a motor vehicle. The figure shows a section of the sheet metal part 10 facing the vehicle roof. The sheet metal part 10 has basically a trapezoid shape with a tapered end portion E showing an angular edge 11 facing downwards after its attachment to the vehicle roof. The end portion E comprises at least one mounting section H with a screw bolt 13 in order to attach the sheet metal part 10 to the vehicle roof, for example to a roof column. The central portion of the sheet metal part shows a basically triangular bead S. Its broader part on the opposite side of the end portion E exhibits mounting sections H on each corner with a handle 12 attached to it.
The handle 12 is attached with retaining means 14 in their respective mounting openings 16 as depicted in fig. 2a., with the help of locking means 15. The locking means 15 engage in the sheet metal forming part 10 in the areas of densified sections 18, to be further described with reference to fig. 2a. The retaining means 14 are higher than the surrounding sheet metal forming part 10, their base corresponding to the geometry of the mounting openings 16. The handle 12 is formed like a flat bar with a curved shape. The sheet metal formed part 10 is made of an aluminium alloy.
Fig. 2a shows a detailed perspective top view of one of the mounting sections H for the attachment of the handle 12 to the sheet metal part 10. The mounting openings 16 have a basically rectangular base contour with the broad sides B being straight and the narrow sides D rounded. Adjacent to the broad sides B are coined sections 18, also exhibiting a basically rectangular base contour. In one embodiment version, the coined sections 18 are thinner than the surrounding material of the sheet metal forming part 10 by 0,5 mm, which measures about 2,5 mm in the depicted example. * * * *
The advantage is the increased strength of the sheet metal part 10 in this area, thus meeting the relevant specifications requested for the sheet metal part 1 0.The decrease in the coined sections' 18 material thickness is particularly favourable to precisely hold the locking means 15 of the sheet metal part 10 at this point. So in the case of a given load impact on the handle 12, the coined sections 18 ensure an appropriate stability of the sheet metal part lOin either the attachment or mounting sections H. * * * * * * S. Fig. 2b shows another detailed perspective top view of a mounting section H for attaching a handle 12 to the sheet metal part 10. Here the detailed view is also limited to the mounting section H with the opening 16 and the adjoining coined section 16.
The mounting opening 16 is depicted in a sloped cut, so the rectangular base contour in this embodiment is only partially visible. The visible base contour of the coined section 18 in this cut version is larger than the base contour of the visible mounting opening 16 and encompasses it entirely.
Fig. 3 shows a sheet metal strip 20 depicting -from the right to the left in relation to the image plane -nine different production stages of the manufacturing process of the sheet metal part 10. The sequence of each production stage from the right to the left shows that the coined sections 18 are manufactured in several stages, followed by the manufacturing of the mounting openings 16. It is possible that the densifying or coining process of the sheet metal strip 20 for manufacturing the sheet metal forming part 10 is carried out by means of homogenous loads. So less overall load is being applied during each single densifying or coining step of the sheet metal strip 20, as it would be in the case of densifying or coining the part in one single production step.
Accordingly, a required tool element 22 can be used in a more sparing way as far as its durability is concerned, thus ensuring a longer lifespan of the tool element 22. It is also conceivable in a further embodiment that the first production step is a flanging process, followed by the manufacturing of the densified section 18 with the help of tool element 22.
It is furthermore possible to flange the punched-out material of the mounting opening 16 at least partially and then to transform it into the densified section 18 by either a densifying or coining process step.
Fig. 4a and 4b show in a schematic side and top view of the densified section 18 of the mounting section H for attaching the grab handle 12 to the sheet metal forming part 10. It also shows a tool element 22 used for creating the densified section 18. The tool element 22 has a basically rectangular base contour corresponding to the shape of the coined section 18. In a further embodiment which is not shown here, it is possible that the tool element 22 differs from the depicted base contour. Consequently, the base contour of the densified section 18 will also have a different shape.
One of several production or drawing steps is depicted. In the present case the sheet metal forming part lOis densified from 2,5mm to 2 mm in the coined section. The advantage is that the previously used retaining means 14 with their matching locking means 15 can still be used here, as the densified light-weight metal for the sheet metal forming part 10, an aluminium alloy for instance, now offers the strength requested in this area. Simultaneously, it is unnecessary to adjust the existing retaining means 14 and their matching locking means 15 in this area. In fact, the previously used retaining means 14 and their matching lacking means 15 are also suitable for the sheet metal forming part 10.
It is cognoscible that the schematic drawing of the mounting openings 16 shows a basically rectangular base contour with straight broad sides B and similar straight narrow sides D. Adjacent ta the broad sides B are the coined sections 16, featuring also a basically rectangular base contour and lesser length than the broad side B of the opening 16. * * . * * 0
