Abstract

A sledge 1 comprises two open-faced boxes 10A, 10B, which may be unitary mouldings of equal dimensions, connected by a hinge 14, which may connect top edges of side walls 12C of boxes 10A, 10B, enabling sledge 1 to be closed for transport or opened for use. Straps 17A, 17B and lugs 18a, 18B may be provided to ensure that sledge 1 is securely closed. When closed, boxes 10A, 10B form a case which may be suitable for use as luggage, and straps 15 may be attached to base 13 to allow sledge 1 to be used as a backpack. When open, boxes 10A, 10B may have front facing side walls 12A inclined to facilitate riding over snow. Ground engageable runners 16A, 16B may be formed into a base panel 13 of each box. Sledge 1 may be connectable to another sledge to form a string of sledges.

Description

I
Title: Novel Sledae The present invention relates to a novel sledge.
Many children enjoy sledging in the snow. When travelling to a location to sledge (e.g. to a ski resort by air) it is not practical to take a sledge as it is too large. Also when sledging, it can be hard work walking up a hill towing a sledge through the snow.
The invention seeks to provide a solution to this problem.
According to the present invention there is provided a novel sledge comprising a pair of open faced boxes each with a base an side walls hinged together, said boxes can hinge from a closed position with the open faces abutting each other to form an enclosed case, to an open sledge position with the base of each box able to lie substantially in the same plane.
Preferably straps are provided whereby the boxes when folded into a case can be carried on the back like a rucksack.
Preferably the boxes are of equal dimension.
Preferably the top edge of a side wall of one box is hinges to the top edge of a side wall of the other box.
Preferably the base of each box includes one or more runners.
Preferably each box has four side walls extending from the base with one side wall being inclined away from the base.
Preferably each box is a unitary moulding.
Means may be providing to connect a string of pairs of hinged boxes together to form a multi-person sledge.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a pair of hinged boxes in the open sledge position, and Figure 2 shows a perspective view of a pair of hinged boxes in a closed position.
Referring to the drawings there is shown a sledge 1.
Sledge 1 has a pair of open faced boxes IOA,IOB of equal dimension. Each box 10 has a base 11, four side walls 12A, 12B,12C,12D, and an open face 13 formed by the top edges of side walls 12A,128,12C,12D. Side wall 12A is inclined away from the base, and open face 13 has a larger footprint than base 11. Each box may be unitary moulded, e.g. by vacuum forming or injection moulding.
The top edge of side wall 12A on one box is hinged to the top edge of side wall 12C by a hinge 14.
A rope 15 is provided connected to the side wall 12 olbox lOB.
Three runners I 6A, I 6B, I 6C (other numbers of runners are possible) project below base 11.
With the boxes 10 hinged in the open sledge position as shown in Figure 1, the boxes can be used as a sledge with a user sitting in box 1OA and with feet in box 108. The rope 15 can be used to tow the sledge. The runners 16A,16B,16C in each box give directional stability to the sledge. In this position base of each box able to lie substantially in the same plane. The inclined front wall l2A of box lOB forms a good shape for the front of the sledge to ride up over the sn ow.
With the boxes hinged in the close position as shown in Figure 2, the boxes form a closed case.
Rope 15 can be placed on the hinge 14 prior to folding and can then be used to carry the case like a rucksack. Straps 17A17B on side wall 12C of box 1OA can engage with lugs 18A,1SB on side wall 12A of box 108 to keep the case closed. The case may be used to transport goods when not in use, e.g. when travelling.
The invention may take a form different to that specifically described above. For example, means may be providing to connect a string of pairs of hinged boxes together to form a multi-person sledge. The two side walls 12C of each box could be hinged together so that the sledge would have front and rear inclined side walls 12A.
Further modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the present invention.
